I'm not really sure what to say about this book. It's decent ... but not as the continuation of the Freckles story. It's no secret that I love Gene Stratton Porter ... but her daughter just isn't as good!
Also, a lot of the details of the story don't match up with what we learned about Freckles in A Girl of the Limberlost. If the events of A Girl of the Limberlost took place, then Freckles and the Angel should have been married during this novel ... right?
A couple names were changed and people who were never meant to receive actual names (such as The Angel) received names!
The best part of the book was that the Angel, in my opinion, was portrayed as her spunky, resourceful self, and the whole thing with the crooks in the swamp was good. However, we all know Freckles never intended to go to Ireland at the end of Freckles ... and other things, such as him doubting the Angel ... just not realistic.
This wasn't a bad book, honestly, but it didn't remain true to the characters or plot, and I can't in all honestly give it more than two stars.
A great way to close out the story of Freckles and Angel! This book was written by Gene Stratton Porter's daughter so it had a LITTLE bit of a different vibe and feel, but was still really good. Jeannette Stratton Porter is an amazing author, and kept this book engaging and close to the first book's writing style which I liked. Really good read! I would definitely read it again!
It was better than the first book. It had plenty of description and it was more in depth about what was going on. It was worth reading I really enjoyed the book.
Being a big fan of Gene's work (especially Freckles), I was extremely disappointed by this sequel written by her daughter. Unfortunately Jeannette lacks the magic and heart needed to continue this touching story. It was truly a dumpster fire that I couldn't look away from. Learn from my mistake, and go ahead and re-read anything from Gene herself.
This is a good enough story if you haven't read the first book, but I was disappointed in it because in no way is it a continuation of the Freckles story, and that's what I wanted to read. I wonder what the author's mother (Gene Stratton Porter) would have thought of it. The trouble is, if you really imagine the characters as portrayed in Freckles, then Freckles Comes Home is simply unbelievable. I wonder why Jeanetter Porter wrote it this way.
The thing that makes Freckles such a memorable book is his character traits, as well as those of the Angel, McLean, and all the other people. They all became very real to me and I just can't believe that Freckles, after all he'd been through in the Limberlost and his great love for the Angel and Mr. McLean, would agree to stay in Ireland for four years and live the pampered life that is described in this book. Never would the Freckles in the first book have stayed away from the Angel, the Limberlost, or America that long.
I just can't understand the point of the author making some of the characters in this book so different from the way her mother created them. With the Angel, sometimes she seems the same as she was in Freckles, and other times she does things that seem out of character. Freckles's uncle, too, seems to be a different sort of man in the second book.
So, anyway, I wish I knew what really happened in the lives of Freckles, the Angel, McLean, and all the others after the end of Freckles, because Freckles Comes Home certainly does not tell us. The Girl of the Limberlost tells a little about Freckles and the Angel, but that story seems to take place 10 years or so after the Freckles story.
A continuation of the Freckles story as written by Gene Stratton-Porter's daughter, Jeannette. Freckles has more adventures, and finds his way into romance; a worthy addition to the Stratton-Porter legacy.
The story between Freckles and Girl of the Limberlost that Gene Stratton Porter always wanted to write and wasn't able to before she died. Her daughter finished the story for her and I think it was a wonderful finishing touch. A beautiful story from a time gone by.
