When car trouble sends Lise Kimball into the sweaty, sultry Mississippi south, she wants nothing more than a new tire and a place to spend the night before continuing her trip to New Orleans.
What she doesn't want is to find herself stranded in the company of Donovan True, a man as controlling as the one who drove her from Atlanta.
Except Donovan takes charge in ways Lise has never known. Being at his mercy might be exactly what she's been looking for.
I often read of or hear about authors who knew they were meant to tell stories from the time they left the crib. Me? I didn't decide what I wanted to be when I grew up until I was thirty years old - and then sold my first book at thirty-four. Still, it was obvious that I always knew I was going places.
Like so many other authors, I was a voracious reader from day one, devouring everything from Nancy Drew to My Friend Flicka, which I remember sitting hovered over the heater vent in the kitchen floor to read while my father made his coffee.
I moved on to my mother's Phyllis Whitney, Dorothy Eden, and Mary Stewart gothics before discovering my first true romances written by Lucy Walker and set in the Australian Outback. And then, at last, when I was 18 I found 'The Flame and the Flower'. (My son almost spent his life as Brandon because of that, but I spared him and named him Casey instead!)
Why write romance? Because love stories have always been a major part of the books I've loved. Father Ralph and Meggie Cleary. (I did name my daughter Megan after reading The Thorn Birds! Do you see a trend here?) The aforementioned Brandon Birmingham and Heather Simmons. Wolf Mackenzie and Mary Potter.
Even more so, it's because I love writing romance heroes. The men who sweep both heroines and readers off their feet - not to mention their authors, too!
I've spent several years happily writing action adventure romance for Kensington Brava along with hot and sexy series romances for Harlequin Blaze. Now I'm thrilled to be a launch author for Vows.
This novella is well written but being short the plot line wasn't very believable,(One night stand that develops into insta-love). Both protagonist are very likable and I wished this could have been longer. Still, an enjoyable read with lots of steamy smut and a totally hot hero:)
While the writing was technically sound and the dialog natural, the plot seemed to lack conflict. Perfectly enjoyable, and priced right for the short length at $.99, it's ultimately unmemorable.
What an interesting short story! I had difficulty rating it, so my review will explain the 4 stars.
This was a 99 cent book, which i purchased months ago, and rediscovered on my Kindle this afternoon, never read. It tells the story of Lise, who has filed for divorce and left her controlling husband. She gets a flat tire and stops in a bar parking lot where Donovan helps her change the tire.
She and Donovan get to know each other better and hit it off. The seduction and first love scene is slow and sultry, blazing hot and oh so memorable.
Turns out Donovan is managing the bar for a friend who is in jail for a DUI. What should be a one-night-stand gets complicated, due to the mutual attraction. Donovan is... mmm... yummy.
This story was excellent in so many ways. It was well written, and the characters were compelling. The seductive sex scenes were descriptive and memorable. I was frustrated with the somewhat abrupt ending to the book, but it was only 99cents and was advertised as a short story, so I can't fault the author for something they stated up front.
This book would make an excellent novel. It certainly is worth reading, if you are looking for a fun short read.
I really enjoyed reading this one. This is one of the 'quiet' books as I like to call them. Not a lot of action or stuff happening, but they manage to get under your skin. It's one that's going to stick around with me for quite a while.
I loved the intensity of the characters, and I loved that it was about them without all the bells and whistles about everything around them. There was nothing to distract from their story; two broken hearts finding peace with each other.
Lots of smut between the characters without getting vulgar like you'd expect from an erotica book. More beautiful than that. Let's call this one Erotic Romance.
For two ships passing in the night (ie a one-night stand), the H/h were pretty likeable. This short story was sexy and actually kinda' sweet. I would have liked it even better if the two stray dogs were also included in the HEA. lol
** Book Review** Book: At His Mercy by Alison Kent Star Rating: 3.5 stars Genre: Romance
Summary: When car trouble sends Lise Kimball into the sweaty, sultry Mississippi south, she wants nothing more than a new tire and a place to spend the night before continuing her trip to New Orleans. What she doesn’t want is to find herself stranded in the company of Donovan True, a man as controlling as the one who drove her from Atlanta.
Thoughts: It was nice to pass the time, but it didn’t do it for me. There is good character development, considering it’s such a short book. There was no change in mood throughout the story, which is why, for me, it felt plain. Nonetheless, it was a cute story. Give it a chance, and let me know what you think!
Really quick 9 chapter novella, that was good. It was sexy story of lust that turns into something more. Running from a controlling, emotionally abusive marriage a woman with car trouble meets the man to change her life. A man doing a friend a huge favour while trying to take charge of his career meets the one woman he can’t seem to get enough of. They complete something in each other that was missing.
Lise has served her husband with divorce papers and left her home in Atlanta to move to New Orleans. Along the way she gets a flat tire in Mississippi and Restaurant manager Donovan helps her. Instant attraction and a night of passion that turns into more.
This is a short novella about Lise and Donavan. Lise gets stranded in a small town on her way to New Orleans. Donovan Dru is a famous author, helping out a friend by tending the bar where Lise gets her flat tire. It's a quick, very erotic read.
Woman escaping mentally controlling and sexually boring relationship in Atlanta (she said manipulative but what tells me it was just boring) hooks up with guy who changes her tire in Mississippi and then they move to New Orleans. Could have done more with the plot and characters.
This was a short story about a woman getting away from her controlling husband and meeting a stranger who helps fix a flat. I read this in an hour. It was classified as erotic, but it was just a 4 on the heat scale to me. It wasn't bad, but I read it last night and mostly forgot it already. There was a strange six month gap also. It just felt like it was missing half of a story. I know it was a short, but something just didn't click for me.
Short sweet story about second chances and finding love in the most unexpected places. I would have liked to know more about Donovan and his ex. There was a huge six month gap in which their relationship developed. How did she deal with his fame? How did he deal with her ex husband looking for her? I would also have liked an epilogue to find out whether or not they made it in "the real world", as Lise put it.
A nicely sexy read that managed to bring the characters to life and give them backstory in a fairly short format. I actually wouldn't have minded if this had been longer just because the characters were so damn good.
This was a free Kindle download I picked up on 05/18/12 for the Why Buy the Cow? reading challenge.
Two and a half stars -- a 1/2 star for the fine southern setting. The novella was just fine -- I'm always up for a lady on the run and a gentleman rescuer who is more than he seems. My problem was in the labeling: "An erotic contemporary" ... either I've been reading in too hawt a reading zone or my standards have changed. Thoughts?
Quick read (43 pages) but fun. Lise's car trouble stops her outside a bar in the south, much closer to her ex than she ever wanted to be. When Donovan lends a hand he's a little pushier than she appreciates but there's something about him that intrigues her. As he assists with her car her begins to mean so much for to her than she could have imagined. Good read!
This story starts out sweet, sensual and interesting - you then get dumped as the author jumps ahead to HEA. There was so much more to be told about this couple - very disappointing.
