The Distinguished Rogues ~ Book Two

The past will find a way to haunt you.

Unrepentant rogue, Giles Wexham, Earl of Daventry, wrings pleasure from every moment and likes his carefree life exactly as it is. During his summer retreat to the country, he becomes reluctant host and nursemaid to his former betrothed, a woman he’d thought long dead, a woman Giles had mistaken for a ghost while he’d found pleasure in another woman’s arms.

Unbearable pain and laudanum has kept Lillian Winter apart from society since the accident that ruined her life. She’s endured six years of agony at the hands of incompetent practitioners and longs for an end to her suffering. Finding herself in the Earl of Daventry’s care brings surprising relief from her injuries, and a longing for the life denied her. Yet as new-found pleasures lower Lilly’s resistance to the wicked earl, a long-forgotten danger returns to stalk her.

I’m afraid I can’t be at all fair about rating this book, I’m stating that up front.

It’s a fine book. Romantic things happen, the sex is well written, no one acts particularly stupidly. Kudos.

HOWEVER. . . as someone living life with real chronic pain. . . . screw this mess. I am sick to death of the way chronic pain sufferers are portrayed in books and tv. Guess what y’all, you can’t stop being in agony after six years of it just because someone gives you a particularly good rub-a-dub a couple days in a row. And you know what else, how nice for him that he doesn’t allow laudanum in his house. Yay for the guy who has never needed it to have such fancy high morals. Woot. Much yay. But, surprise, you can’t take that away like that. The amount of vomiting alone would have scared him to death.

Yes it’s just a book and yes I’m over-reacting, but ponder this, he only fell in love with her after he was good and sure she was fixed. Always remember and never forget fellow readers - the only good sick people are dead sick people and sick people who overcome their diseases. In other words, there are no good sick people.

Well, I have to say this book was better than the first one, "Chills". The 2nd book in the series is about Giles, who might have been in the 1st book. Since I DNF Chills, I couldn't say.

So, this has to be the most bizarre Regency romance I've read. Giles is our male lead. He's a man whore Earl who does every female in London, except virgins & married women (well, he did do that ONE married woman). He goes only to balls at a certain mansion because when he's doing whatever female he seduces at the time, he sees his "ghost". A little pale girl whom he wants to have sex with. He imagines it's her he's *ucking as does one or two women in front of her.

One day, while he's rusticating at his country house recovering from the sexual excess in London, his former betrothed's father shows up with our heroine. Lilly was thrown off a bridge when she was 14 by her father's heir, her cousin. Of course no one knows how she fell off the bridge when
the stone rail is waist high & she's afraid of heights. Lilly's devoted father
doesn't figure this out. So, for 6 years she's been in pain, starved & drugged by the nurses her father employed. The cousin is paying them on the side to make sure she doesn't recover. Her father (who hasn't a lot of brain power) leaves her with Giles & takes off to find a place to hide her. Because although he's stupid, he knows that someone is trying to kill her. Giles finds out who his "ghost" really is & is horrified for having sex with multiple women in front of his former betrothed.

This is just like a Lifetime Channel movie - if they made Regency movies that is. There's a faithful dog that saved her 6 years ago & continues to stay by her side. The faithful servants, the faithful best friend. There's a fire & the crazy cousin loses it & tries to shoot everyone.
The heroine who has suffered from malnutrition & drug addiction for 6 years makes a miraculous recovery in 2 weeks. She's beautiful & still has all her teeth (which are perfect).
Even though this is a Regency time period romance, her father leaves her unattended with a man whore who as soon as she's miraculously recovered (in days!), wastes no time diddling her. WOW!

I'm just glad this was an Amazon deal. I paid 99 cents for a bundle of 3 HB novels. I'm thinking I paid too much. At least I finished this one!

it is the classical love story with a happy end and more sex than usual. Lily is cut from the world after a fall from a bridge. She lives in pain and cannot move much. Giles is a distinguished rogue, taking much pleasure in sex, with any woman he can seduce. But Lily comes in his mind, in his dreams and he will cure her and fall in love with her. There is just not enough of a story for my taste.

I had high hopes for this book. The first two chapters were interesting. But the remainder of the book read like someone slapped the words onto paper as quickly as possible.
The writing was stilted, the hero so contrived as to be gross. I didn't really care about any of the characters.

4/3.5 stars (enjoy Maureen Driscoll, Elisa Braden, Sophie Jordon, Samantha Holt, Stacy Reid)

The development and interest in main characters and secondary characters was enjoyable. I really did like the H/H for this book; very well paired as a couple. You also get a secondary romance with sister and friend.

I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock.

writing style is easy to follow, humorous moments, the give and take dialogue enjoyable.

Romantic/sexual content (kissing, oral, love making scenes) was throughout the book. Nothing over the top; again nicely intertwined in the story. 2.5/5 hotness and steam.

I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series).

would recommend this book and series (you don’t have to read them in order however it wouldn’t hurt to read them in order to get the full story throughout the series).

You can definitely tell the writing difference from her first book in this series which I felt was a little too long and incomplete storyline.

Spoilers

This book was a decent book on one level and pure drivel on the other. So Giles is a complete rake that was once betrothed to Lilly. Lilly had an accident at age 14. Lilly's mother had told him and others she died. She was not dead but basically bedridden and in pain. Her nurses kept her drugged on laudanum. Her and her father stay with his friends (no one discloses she is alive). She walks around the houses in her night gowns and spies on the parties and balls. Most especially Giles and his lovers. He thinks she is a ghost. Convenient that she knew it was him and she was at the right houses to spy on him.
Lilly's father takes her to Gile's country estate and leaves her there while he visits a more permanent location for her. The same day her father leaves the nurse runs away in the night. Giles refuses to have laudanum in his house and has it thrown out. Lilly comes out if her drugged state and does not suffer the consequences of a 6 year dependency.
Giles takes care of her and does massages to control her pain. 🤔 He loves being her caretaker. After a few days besides pain after a long day she is up and moving around and they start caring on an affair. She started her period and thought she was dying. What??? In 6 years she never had one or was not coherent enough to know but could spy on Giles if he was at the same house as her. It just all seemed weird to me.... The co dependency they formed. Lilly doesn't think she will ever be up for dancing, late nights out in London, or carriage rides because of the pain they cause, but she can spend half the night having sex with Giles. Not to mention pregnancy ahead.

It started off interesting enough, but then I'm not sure what happened. I did finish it since I bought it. I think it needs to be rewritten. Book one was a good book.

*grumble grumble grumble*

Like yes, the thriller mystery portion was good but there was just something off about the disability rep in this one. I don’t know exactly what it was - laudanum overdoses to escape pain, alcohol binges when denied the laudanum, hero feeling guilty for being attracted to an “invalid” who may not be an invalid bc someone has it out for her because so many “accidents” keep happening - there’s a lot happening to excuse the heroine and make her desirable when (point in fact) anyone with a disability is...worthy of love and being loved?

Crazy. I know.

There was just a LOT being thrown into this pot and I didn’t even touch on the random “ghost” sightings whenever our hero happens to be in the middle of getting his wick lit. (Please...don’t EVER use that euphemism again...dear lord.)

Because then he feels...guilty that she was spying on him in her laudanum inspired nightly wanderings. Which he not only got off on but also thinks he now needs to make up for, so he dedicates his time to care for her as...penance.

I’d love to see the storyboard for this one. Honestly. Because just writing it all out now, I’m getting confused and I just finished it.

I didn't think I would like this as much as the first but I was wrong. Installment 2 of the series was even sweeter because the characters were broken in some way or another and found themselves understood by the most unlikely of people. Giles seems almost terrified of the thought of falling in love and Lily expects to never experience it given her disabilities. They sort of smooth out one another's rough edges and make one another believe they are worth a happily ever after. It is so sweet, also super sexy, and I like Giles more for making Lily realize she is worthy of life.

I loved Lily the whole time. She was physically broken and because of things I won't mention so I don't ruin the book, her mind seems clouded as well. Once she is clear-minded she is witty, intelligent and has a desire to experience life beyond what she has ever known. Giles took a bit longer for me to like. I was disgusted by him in the beginning but I warmed up to him as Lily helped him become the man he was meant to be.

I knew watching Lord Daventry fall in love would be a riot! Giles and Lily were betrothed as children, but when Lily's crazy mother realizes that her daughter isn't recovering from her near death drowning experience she tells everyone Lily is dead. Lily's father spends a decade taking her to every doctor in the country and keeping her existence as much of a secret as he can because of the dangerous accidents that follow his daughter. Leaving Lily with Giles despite his terrible reputation to investigate a safe place in Wales for his daughter, Lord Winter believes his invalid daughter will be safe if no one knows her location! Because that doesn't usually require a hasty marriage.... This book had nice pacing and just enough danger/intrigue to keep things exciting! I'm loving this series!

A plot that could have been good, is riddled with flaws and nonsense.
Giles sees a ghost repeatedly as he beds women, who turns out nit only to be real, but his ex-betrothed from his younger days. Lilian the ghost says nothing… 🙄
He flip flops around with his feelings in a most immature way. She manages to recover in two weeks after SIX years of near starvation and being plied constantly with laudanum. He won’t have laudanum in the house, so we are to believe she recovers, cold turkey, with almost NO DTs, vomiting, or other withdrawal side-effects.
The evil cousin gets very little attention until the latter 25% of the book, but we are drowning in Giles’ emotional angst.
Read if you must, just take a hefty dose of scepticism beforehand.

Well, I read the first one and was convinced enough to pay for the bundle (1/2/3). They generally seem pretty good, but there's always something that edges them out of 'real' and 'complete'. Not sure how else to explain it. I really dislike the H in bk3 for most of it and then he just goes completely stupid for the era... so I'm not sure if I'll put more money into the series, all tho they are prices fairly well. I've got a later book in the series for free, so might try that.

At this point the mm series interests me more since we just got a look at Stanis and Redding. Tho I'm not sure if I'll pay for them either.

The caring side of rogues

14 year old Lily's childhood betrothal ends due to accident. Six years later Giles learns Lily didn't die when she is brought to his country estate. An intriguing story as Giles becomes her protector when her father leaves her in his care. He can't resist her despite her condition nor keep his hands off but wants to improve her life. As their relationship intensifies bits of her memory return and past danger. Giles determined to reform is very protective and realizes he can't give her up. Meanwhile his butler and housekeeper are playing matchmaker. Intrigue and danger, romance, wit and humor, combine for a delightful story I highly recommend.

This was a very good story of Giles, Lord Daventry, and Lily Winter, his former fiancé, he had thought dead. Her father brings her to Daventry’s estate and leaves her with a nurse. The nurse runs away the first night, and Daventry begins to care for Lily. Under his care, Lily thrives. She begins to recall the accident that had ruined her health. When her father returns, his nephew is with him. Lily’s transformation surprises him, and he tries again to kill her. Oscar Carrington ,Daventry’s friend kills him.

Good addition

It was a good read, even funny, until the last few chapters. Lilly became someone else and so did Giles. It’s like they somewhat switched roles and that thwart the book for me, in the end.
It puzzled me when Giles started crying and being so emotional and Lilly started acting like she always been apart of Ton and not stashed away somewhere sick for years.
I had to go back a chapter to if I missed something, I didn’t.

Broken was an amazing story. I loved how Gile's visions turned into a real being. Lily was broken but thanks to Gile's skills in seduction he found ways to bring her healing while also offering pleasure. He has always been a sexual being, thru his touch she gains confidence as a woman & begins to heal her body & soul. Loved it, highly recommend for lovers of historical romance.

Another good one

Another Heather Boyd success. Good storyline although the premise that a Regency father would leave his daughter at a bachelor establishment, sans chaperone, is too farfetched to be believable. And it takes more than a day or so to withdraw from laudanum. But still a decent read.

Nice story with a very ill and fragile h and a very debauched H who finally meets his love match.

This author is not a purist with following regency but that is OK for me.

The ending was very abrupt - no epilogue, etc. and there was some loose ends - like the 2 servants romance was left opened. I would have liked a less rushed ending.

Reformed rakes do make the best husbands.

Being addicted to pain medication has been a problem for centuries. Sometimes men do make excellent caregivers. Some men are sexy enough to bring a woman back from the grave.

this was such a mixed bag - i was so confused about the actual plot … the premise, the ghost, the massages the staff … like there were multiple times i was just lost

that being said, this scratched the trope itch for me - this book has a beautiful depiction of a hero who is devoted to his wife.

I like this because there are no big misunderstandings and the couple do feel like friends. It’s not a complex regency but I enjoyed the HEA.
