Most people want to do the right thing by their partner, family, workmates and community. Yet what is meant by 'the right thing' has been confounded by the decline of moral leadership and rapidly changing values, demographics and social mores and the rise of aggressive fundamentalism. 'Becoming' outlines the challenges and tasks of each life stage, demonstrating how to foster sound decision-making, as each stage builds on all previous birth and becoming a family; childhood; adolescence; becoming adult; mid-life for men and women, and later years. Throughout life relationships are constantly changing, constantly becoming, challenging us to let go of things no longer relevant. Dissonance arises when we fail to let go, increasing expectations and responsibilities at the same time as diminishing choice. The Maturity Model proposed in this book empowers individuals to self-assess and make confident decisions in challenging circumstances. The Maturity Model has proven useful for measuring individual incident, relationships, practices and policies, for the way in which implicit and explicit expectations affect choice and outcomes. By using the Maturity Model, you become the expert, confident in negotiating crucial life stages to attain positive growth, harmony and productivity in the life long journey to becoming.
I have just finished reading "Becoming: the ordinary person's road map to life's big decisions”. It is eloquently written by my friend Paula Collins and is true to its title. It takes the reader on an insightful journey from birth to becoming adolescent, becoming adult, becoming a family, becoming aged and all whilst maturing continuously.
Paula presents a useful tool called the 'Maturity Model' which she has developed whilst becoming the person she is today. She attests to the importance of confidence when making decisions and encourages the reader to use her tool to assist in making informed confident decisions. Her inclusion of 'Points for Reflection' at the end of each chapter enabled me to consider the many difficult decisions I have made during my life, and the resulting outcomes.
I loved the book so much I'm going to read it again. There is so very much rich and interesting material within in. With my one reading, I know I have just scraped the surface of its richness and usefulness.
I purchased the Kindle version from Amazon as it was easier whilst travelling. The link below takes you to the page within Paula's blog that gives more details about the book. I thoroughly recommend it.
