A decomposed body has been found in a forest and Detective Judith Krieger has been given the case. For a very long time Judith has been burdened with a terrible memory. Suffering with chronic fatigue Judith has made many mistakes. She will have to put the past to the back of her mind and concentrate on her work. With everything at stake she has to solve this case.
A well written, page turning psychological thriller..

A little hard to follow worth the read. Det Judith Krieger has been assigned a case that will end her career or put her back on top. Suffering from forgetfulness due to her bad health and habits her past keeps creeping into her investigation and she is forced to keep trying to solve the case before she loses herself and all she has worked for. I would like to thank the Publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this ARC.

Hier hab ich zur Abwechslung mal wieder ein Buch: gehört. Schon klar, es heißt GoodREADS, aber Ausnahmen müssen sein. :-D Nach 3 Tagen hatte ich es durch, es schien also durchaus spannend für mich gewesen zu sein. Fand auch cool, dass es in einem Setting aus der näheren Umgebung stattfindet. Aber: Es waren wirklich ZU VIELE Figuren / Charaktere. Und ich habe daher nach 2/3 des Buches ein weeenig den Faden verloren, und daher bin ich jetzt am Ende echt geneigt, noch mal eine Inhaltsangabe dazu durchzulesen. Schadeee.

Judith Krieger is a young police woman traumatized by an event that happened some years previously. Her world is falling apart. Everything in her life is out of control. Her boss has been lenient with her thus far but his patience is running out.
When a badly decomposed body is found hidden away in a forest, Judith has one last chance to redeem herself.
Her love life is in tatters and Judith is exhausted. She needs all her courage and endurance to see this case through.
As Judith is to discover, the forest holds many secrets. Home to a yoga retreat, there is a constant movement of people, causing difficulties for the investigators to complete their tasks.
Judith was an experienced and very successful detective. She had held the respect of all her colleagues within the police force. Most of those she would have crossed paths with knew she was not to be trifled with. But times have changed. Judith no longer trusts her gut. She is acting careless and forgetful. Her boss and partner are concerned not just for Judith but for the whole investigation.
Silent is the Forest is a complex read. There are numerous characters with rather unusual names. Maybe this is where I had difficulty connecting with the book. I found myself having to back check on many occasions and I have to be honest I almost stopped reading at page 100!! I did though persist to the end and was glad I did.
I have read many translated books and I always hope that a part of the story does not get lost in translation. In the case of this book I think it did… Maybe in German the book comes across better.
The story-line attracted me to the book but it was the layout, the jumping between a multitude of characters and the complexity of the characters intertwining stories that resulted in my rather deflated feeling about the book.
I have no doubt there are plenty who will think differently and I am glad I had the opportunity to read Silent is the Forest.
It’s always good to step out of one’s comfort zone occasionally, hence my attraction to the translated book.
It opens a world of different writing to me, to which I am very thankful.

Finally, again a very good book after I'd read a handful of bad ones.
Interesting characters, good murder plot, a few twists and turns I didn't expect and a killer I didn't suspect until almost at the very end. - Very good!

well - read it in the danish tranlation, and liked it very much. Didn't know the author before this book - but she is one I'll be looking for.

Very dark and bleak. I was prepared for that though. I found the book was on my brain when I took breaks from it, trying to figure everything out. There's a lot of characters, and it can be hard to keep everything straight. Definitely not a book you should stretch out over more than a couple days, because you'll get lost. It's a really tightly woven, well written, intriguing story with well fleshed out characters. I'd be very interested in reading more by this author.
Judith Krieger is at the end of her rope. She experienced a tragedy that she just can't move on from. It has affected her career, her personal life, and her sanity. She drinks and chainsmokes her way through the story, making small and large mistakes with the case she's assigned on her way. Once a force to be reckoned with, she is now saddled with a young detective she must work with. They both seem to look at each other as a burden they must bear. A body has been found by a jogger, and it is too ravaged from animals and time to easily identify... but that's only the beginning. Finding out what he was doing there and who killed him are the difficult parts. We get perspectives from the detectives, the forester who found the body, the widow, and several others connected to them.

When I first started this book, I knew I had read it before, yet once I got into it, I then thought maybe I hadn't. So I think at some stage I had previously started it, then not carried on, Why I don't know.
But trying to get through some of the books I've had for far to long on my kindle, I carried on reading determined to get through that list. Yeah Right.

I found this book hard to read. The characters were interesting but I just found them so frustrating. A little more interaction between them would have solved this mystery way earlier and saved me a lot of un-needed reading. The premise was interesting and the ending surprising, but I didn't like the feel of this book, I am sorry to say.

Nachdem ich Die geheime Geschichte von Donna Tartt gelesen hatte, 5 Sterne..hat es wohl jedes Buch schwer, aber dieser Schreibstil von Gesa Klönne gefiel mir gar nicht da er im Perfekt geschrieben ist.
Gefallen hat mir der spirituelle Sonnenhof.
Ab und zu kam.Spannung auf, doch zu wenige Verdächtige und zu klar wer der Täter war...

I thought this was excellent. Richly atmospheric and tense, with the story turning on intriguing, well-drawn female characters. Judith Krieger is a wonderfully human and layered heroine.

A good psychologic thriller. I loved the complex characters. The story is well build. The plott is a race against the clock. The Tarot reading in the story is accurate. A 3,5.

Since I assume most people will read this in German, I'll do this review in German first and then summarize my thoughts in English further down!
Dies war ein merkwürdiges Buch. Irgendwie hatte es alle richtigen Zutaten, aber die Mischung hat trotzdem die Suppe versalzen. Es war nicht unbedingt schlecht, aber macht trotzdem nicht dass ich sofort losrenne um mir den zweiten Band zu besorgen.
Zum einen waren alle Charaktere, bis auf vielleicht zwei am Rande, die meiste Zeit ziemlich unsympathisch. Wäre nicht weiter schlimm, wenn ich nicht den Eindruck gehabt hätte, dass das nicht so gewollt war. Alle hatten es schwer. Schreckliche Schicksalsschläge wohin das Auge reicht, aber keiner macht mal den Mund auf oder zieht es auch nur in Erwägung sich vielleicht mal professionelle Hilfe zu suchen (Psychologen sind doch alles nur Schwätzer!). Keiner hat Freunde und Familie wird nur am Rand erwähnt. Das kann man mit ein paar Figuren machen, aber wenn wirklich ALLE mit denen der Leser eine gewisse Zeit verbringen muss so drauf sind, weiß man irgendwann nicht mehr wer wer ist und will einfach nur noch fertig werden mit dem Lesen.
Und noch etwas ist mir aufgefallen das mir nach einer Weile etwas sauer aufgestoßen ist: Ich habe ungefähr vier erwachsene Männer gezählt die alle mit 15-17 jährigen Mädchen ins Bett gestiegen sind, oder ins Bett steigen wollten (natürlich betrogene Ehefrauen inklusive) und die meisten Charaktere haben nicht mal mit der Wimper gezuckt. Die Mädchen waren "frühreif", "von Sex besessen" oder einfach nur "Flittchen" und "Schlampen". Außerdem wurde es irgendwie für nötig erachtet ihre Brüste zu beschreiben. Ich musste echt manchmal auf das Cover gucken, nur um sicher zu gehen dass dieses Buch von einer Frau geschrieben wurde. Ich glaube gegen Ende ist einer der Hauptcharaktere mal aufgewacht und hat einem der Männer gedroht, aber sonst? Das fand ich irgendwie reichlich merkwürdig. Ich weiß natürlich dass die Meinungen und Ansichten der Charaktere nichts mit dem Autor zu tun haben, aber wir waren hier in den Köpfen mehrerer Personen, die meisten davon Frauen... da hab ich echt mehr erwartet.
Es gab ein paar Momente, die ich wirklich gerne mochte und sehr gut geschrieben fand, wie zum Beispiel die Familiengeschichte der Försterin oder die des besten Freundes der Kommissarin. Ich habe allerdings keine Ahnung was die "große Liebes" in diesem Buch sein soll, die auf dem Buchrücken erwähnt wird. Genau genommen ist so ziemlich alles verdreht was auf dem Buchrücken zu lesen ist.
Der Fall an sich war okay. Wer sich einigermaßen mit Krimis auskennt und aufpasst, weiß spätestens 100 Seiten vor Schluss wer es war und auch warum. Auch ein bisschen frustrierend zu sehen dass beide Hauptermittler wirklich Anfängerfehler machen... "Sag mal, hast du eigentlich schon..." "Ups, ne habe ich nicht."

There were some really well written moments that I really enjoyed, though. The story of the forester was really moving for example.
The book also tried to hit me over the head with the fact that teenage girls (whose boobs somehow all needed describing) want sex and will use innocent married man for it. That was a bit disturbing? Especially since most of the narrators were women. Once again, only near the end that attitude got a bit better, but it still left a sour aftertaste in my mouth.
The case itself was okay. If you've ever read a crime novel before, you'll know who it was and why they did it way before the end of the story. Plus, both investigators make some really weird mistakes.

This was an OK read. Slow in places. It took me a while to read but I managed to read it. 3*. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from netgalley.

Die junge Försterin Diana Westermann findet auf einem ihrer Hochsitze im Bergischen Land eine schon ziemlich mitgenommen aussehende Leiche. Kommissarin Judith Krieger, die noch mit dem Trauma kämpft, dass vor einiger Zeit ihr bester Freund und Kollege bei einem Einsatz erschossen wurde, über-nimmt den Fall als einen der ersten nach ihrer Rückkehr in den Beruf. Erstmals ermittelt sie gemeinsam mit dem jungen, ehrgeizigen Manni Korzilius, mit dem die Chemie zunächst so gar nicht stimmt.
Die Ermittlungen führen Judith sehr schnell zum "Sonnenhof", einem Yoga-Ashram am Waldrand, wo einige Aussteiger sich Meditation, Buddhismus und Bio-Landbau verschrieben haben. Haben die Leiter des Zentrums etwas zu verbergen? Ist der junge Mann, der sich Vedanja nennt, nur unsympathisch oder hat er wirklich etwas auf dem Kerbholz? Welches Geheimnis hütet die siebzehnjährige Laura, die von ihrer Mutter in den Ashram gegeben wurde?
Als die Identität des toten Mannes geklärt ist, gibt auch seine Ehefrau den Beamten Rätsel auf. Fortschritte sind kaum zu verzeichnen, und zum Leidwesen ihres Vorgesetzten kann sich Judith Alleingänge bei den Nachforschungen nicht verkneifen...
Nicht schon wieder so eine traumatisierte Ermittlerin? Ja, das war auch zunächst mein Gedanke. Dieser viel bemühte Krimiheldentypus wird hier aber wie auch die anderen Figuren realistisch mit Leben erfüllt, außerdem ist Judith Krieger nur eine von mehreren Protagonisten, aus deren Sicht die Geschehnisse erzählt werden (übrigens im Präsens, was den Leser mitten ins Geschehen hineinreißt).
Durch die verschiedenen Handlungsebenen hat man zwar mehr Teile des Gesamtbildes in der Hand als die Ermittler, doch vieles bleibt lange Zeit undurchschaubar und die Auflösung war erst sehr spät zu erahnen. So mag ich das bei einem guten Krimi.
Judith, die Einzelgängerin, und Manni, der junge Karrieretyp, passen so gar nicht zusammen, sind auch beide nicht die großen Sympathieträger, es gibt zahlreiche Konflikte sowohl auf menschlicher als auf beruflicher Ebene. Auch die anderen Erzähler kämpfen mit vergangenen und aktuellen Problemen, niemand ist durch die Bank der strahlende Held mit weißer Weste, andererseits überfrachtet Gisa Klönne ihre Figuren auch nicht mit theatralischem Psycho-Kram, sondern bleibt nah an der Realität.
Wieder ein Beweis, dass es in Deutschland sehr gute Krimiautor(inn)en gibt!

Als die Identität des toten Mannes geklärt ist, gibt auch seine Ehefrau den Beamten Rätsel auf. Fortschritte sind kaum zu verzeichnen, und zum Leidwesen ihres Vorgesetzten kann sich Judith Alleingänge bei den Nachforschungen nicht verkneifen...
Nicht schon wieder so eine traumatisierte Ermittlerin? Ja, das war auch zunächst mein Gedanke. Dieser viel bemühte Krimiheldentypus wird hier aber wie auch die anderen Figuren realistisch mit Leben erfüllt, außerdem ist Judith Krieger nur eine von mehreren Protagonisten, aus deren Sicht die Geschehnisse erzählt werden (übrigens im Präsens, was den Leser mitten ins Geschehen hineinreißt).
Durch die verschiedenen Handlungsebenen hat man zwar mehr Teile des Gesamtbildes in der Hand als die Ermittler, doch vieles bleibt lange Zeit undurchschaubar und die Auflösung war erst sehr spät zu erahnen. So mag ich das bei einem guten Krimi.
Judith, die Einzelgängerin, und Manni, der junge Karrieretyp, passen so gar nicht zusammen, sind auch beide nicht die großen Sympathieträger, es gibt zahlreiche Konflikte sowohl auf menschlicher als auf beruflicher Ebene. Auch die anderen Erzähler kämpfen mit vergangenen und aktuellen Problemen, niemand ist durch die Bank der strahlende Held mit weißer Weste, andererseits überfrachtet Gisa Klönne ihre Figuren auch nicht mit theatralischem Psycho-Kram, sondern bleibt nah an der Realität.
Wieder ein Beweis, dass es in Deutschland sehr gute Krimiautor(inn)en gibt!

Silent is the forest
I feel really bad this is my first bad review of a book that I have received from NetGalley. But I always promise a honest review and well I guess you can't like all of them can you.
Ok so maybe I'm missing something, maybe the drama and suspense is there is bucket loads. But perhaps it got lost in the translation. Perhaps in German this is an amazing book. But I can't speak or read German so will just have to go with what I feel about the translated version.
Let me start by saying thank you. Thank you to NetGalley, author Gisa Klonne and Bonnier Zaffre for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review. I loved the cover and the description on the back of the book. I was really excited to read it but as sometimes happens this book just didn't gel with me. However I did manager to read it all and it didn't feel like a chore so that's a massive plus.
I'm a massive fan of Sophie Hannah's books so when I saw this book was liked to hers I was extremely excited to read it.
A body has been found a very badly decomposed body if we are being specific has been found in a forest in Cologne.
Detective Judith Krieger is assigned with investigating what has happened.
Judith was once a renowned detective in her field. But now she is struggling. She is haunted by a terrible memory and she is suffering from chronic fatigue. From being so tired Judith is making a lot of mistakes and the balance between home and work life are blurred.
Can Judith prove that she is the cop she once was?
Can she solve the case?
All sounds great right? And we should be in for a gripping tale. Unfortunately I was left feeling confused and I just couldn't get completely into it. I found it really hard to keep track of all the characters, and I wasn't a fan of the constant changing of narration. I didn't feel connected to the characters.
But there is a good ending in story if you can get there.
Sadly not for me. But perhaps it's for you. Let you know what you think of It.

Eine verstümmelte Leiche wird auf einem Hochsitz im Wald gefunden. Keiner weiß, um wen es sich bei dem Toten handelt, geschweige denn, wer der Mörder sein könnte. Judith Krieger wird zusammen mit Manni auf den Fall angesetzt. Es ist ihre letzte Chance zu beweisen, dass sie nach wie vor eine gute Kommissarin ist.
Es handelt sich um einen typischen Kriminalroman. Es gibt eine Leiche, vorerst keinen Täter und die Ermittler sind psychisch angeknackst. Also alles ganz normal und eh wie immer.
Anfangs kam ich nicht so wirklich in das Buch hinein. Ständig wechseln die Erzähler und ich tat mir schwer, jedes Mal herauszufinden, um wen es sich handelt. Vor allem da die Namen meist nicht erwähnt wurden, sondern nur von "sie" oder "er" die Rede war. Außerdem lernt man gleich am Anfang eine Vielzahl von Personen kennen. Da ist es nicht einfach, den Überblick zu behalten.
So richtig konnte ich mich mit den Charakteren nicht identifizieren bzw. konnte ich mich auch nicht in sie hineinversetzen. Es ist doch alles sehr abstrakt beschrieben. Vermutlich soll dies die Spannung erhöhen, aber in meinen Augen führte das nur zu einem oberflächlichen Erzählstil.
Durch die Leserunde, in der ich das Buch gelesen habe, war schnell klar, wer der Täter ist. Alleine hätte ich das Rätsel wohl nicht so schnell gelöst. Trotzdem handelt es sich keineswegs um einen komplizierten, verstrickten Fall. Ein engagierter Kommissar hätte den Fall wohl auch in ein paar wenigen Tagen lösen können. Somit baut die Autorin einen sehr einfachen Sachverhalt aus, um genug Material für ein ganzes Buch zu haben. So kommt mir das zumindest vor.
Ich glaube nicht, dass ich noch ein Buch der Serie lesen werde, da mich auch die Hauptperson Judith nicht überzeugen konnte.

Mitten im Wald wird auf einem Hochsitz eine nackte Leiche aufgefunden, das Gesicht von Krähen zerhackt. Mit der Aufklärung wird Judith Krieger betraut, zusammen mit ihrem jungen, unerfahrenen Kollegen Korzilius. Doch die erfahrene Kommissarin ist nicht bei der Sache: Seit ihr bester Freund und Kollege Patrick vor zwei Jahren im Dienst erschossen wurde, ist sie wie betäubt. Ihr Kollege weist erste Erfolge auf, ihr selbst unterlaufen Fehler bei der Ermittlung worauf sie beurlaubt wird. Doch ihr Kampfgeist erwacht und sie beginnt auf eigene Faust zu ermitteln.
Der Schreibstil ist gewöhnungsbedürftig: Der ganze Krimi ist im Präsens gehalten, was eine eigene Art von Eindrücklichkeit vermittelt. Hinzu kommt die Vorliebe der Autorin zu ungewöhnlichen Vergleichen. Zum Beispiel S. 21 ,Er lächelt, was sein Gesicht wie eine Kreuzung von Boris Becker und Kermit dem Frosch aussehen lässt.' oder S. 60 ,Die Depression frisst sich in ihre Wohnung, unaufhaltsam wie Sand in ein Ferienhaus...'. Doch nach ca. 100 Seiten hat man sich daran gewöhnt (vielleicht sind auch nur die Vergleiche besser geworden :-)) und die beklemmende Stimmung des Buches hält einen gefangen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt legt sich auch die Verwirrung, die durch die Einführung zahlreicher Personen entstanden ist, so dass man gelegentlich etwas den Überblick verliert. Die Autorin legt mehrere Fährten, doch bei genauem Lesen ist einem recht schnell klar, wer hinter dem Mord steckt.
Spannend bleibt das Ganze dennoch, was sicherlich nicht zuletzt auch der guten und ausführlichen Darstellung der handelnden Personen zu verdanken ist. Deren Gefühls- und Gedankenwelt werden den Leserinnen und Lesern beeindruckend nahegebracht.

I admit I was expecting something a bit different and not as much as characters involved.
In general, I liked the novel and the characters but in the end it was a bit depressive for me no matter how much I tried to look on the bright side. I understand that not all lives are happy, but the quantity of misfortunes and negative events in these characters lives is way too overboard for my taste. It needs a little more light of hope in there to balance things.
The characters are very interesting and for me Gisa Klönne really got in deep into them, their thoughts and feelings. On the other hand, I got a bit lost in the midst of the other characters and struggled to remember who they were and their role in the story. In the end, trying to keep up got a bit tiring and I struggled to get to the end of the book. Even so, I was able to understand who was wo when the narrator changed, which was already a positive thing.
What I really enjoyed in the book were the story line, the murder and the ending. It was unexpected and it has a really good ending for the story. The clues are all there and with a bit of attention the reader can find out who the killer is before the final chapter.
In general is a satisfying read, but too negative for my tastes.

Was ein Müll...
Hinten steht noch so schön drauf: "drei starke, eindringliche Frauenfiguren"
Also gut, wen haben wir dann da:
1. die Kommissarin, suhlt sich im Mitleid, ist abhängig von ihrem Chef, setzt die Ermittlungen auf's Spiel etc. etc.
2. die Försterin, flüchtet sich in den Wald, hat Angst im Dunkeln, fühlt sich ständig verfolgt und von Gott und der Welt bedroht, reißt jemanden in der Bar auf, um sich abzulenken, bla bla bla
3. tja, wer? Die gehörnte Ehefrau? Die bescheuerte Teenagerin?
Das sind alles für mich keine "starken Frauenfiguren" und ich frage mich echt, wer immer so einen Mist auf die Buchrücken schreibt.
Ansonsten ist das Buch allenfalls "meh". Geschichte ist an den Haaren herbeigezogen, liest sich wie ein Tatort, Charaktere dämlich und unsympathisch. Na ja, kostete nur einen Euro und ich brauchte was ohne Hirn für eine lange Busfahrt und ohne Hirn ist dieses Buch nun wirklich.

This was a really enjoyable book. I loved reading a story set in Germany. The translation into English is excellent.
Judith Krieger is investigating the case of a badly decomposed bodyfound in a hide deep in the forest. Determined to solve this case, she breaks most of the rules. The results will make or break her and after suffering a life-altering loss, chain-smoking and badly needing sleep, she realizes her job is the only thing that will sustain her.
There are several interesting female characters, especially the forest ranger. Not knowing the eventual fate of her dog caused me some anxiety, but hey, it's a thriller after all...
It was difficult to find information about the author, but I hope there will be further English translations of her books, I'd love to read more of them. Highly recommended!
