Mitt, as young white-footed mouse, lives happily in a wool mitten deep in the forest until a boy happens by with his rather large dog who snatches Mitt’s beloved home. Mitt embarks on a journey across Michigan to retrieve his warm and cozy mitten, seeing many sights and having many adventures.

This is a Michigan book that will appeal to kids and adults as well. It is written by Kathy-jo Wargin, who has written numerous books about Michigan and it's legends. Mitt is a white-footed mouse who lives in Northern Michigan. His only home has been a red mitten. He doesn't remember his family. When a dog and boy take Mitt's mitten house while out exploring, Mitt begins a journey that goes all across Michigan. Many animals along the way, as well as some people, help him in his journey. It is a 27 chapter book; good for sharing between adults and children. The illustrations are wonderful. However, I won't tell you if Mitt finds his mitten.
This was a slow start to a story, however, my son and I did enjoy reading this story together. It was a fun, cute story, and it got better as the story progressed.
My 5yo loved hearing me read this aloud at bedtime. The chapters are the perfect length for "just one more", and the illustrations are lovely and just enough to keep him engaged between pages of text. It is a heartwarming and adventurous story and so fun to read about Mitt's adventures all over the beautiful state of Michigan.
This is my favorite book ever. This book is about a lone mouse who has a mitt from when he was born. His family went missing and he and the mitt were left alone. He stays there for a year. When Mitt goes to his friends birthday party his mitt comes up missing. The whole forest is out looking for it, he gets a clue about a dog named Digby. Mitt goes all the way to Cheyboygan to Digby's house. THe mitt was stolen and carried all over Michigan. Then he meets all kind of fun animals along the way. The animals see Mitt on his way to try and find his famliy in Wisconsin.
I liked this OK. It would probably appeal to young children more than it did to me. Rather than feeling like a cohesive story, it felt like a series of very short (3-5 page) stories linked together. Mitt's journey consists of: This happened, then this happened, then this happened...
The illustrations were very cute, and I think this would serve well as a classroom read-aloud, but not something I would seek out on my own.
I agree this would probably appeal more to the 6-9 group but it is one of the type if books the you still enjoy even when your older the best way to describe it is a children's adventure book. This was one of my favorite child hood books.
