Daring Debutantes, Book 1...When Victoria Barclay, privileged daughter of the Viscount Grantham, has a life-altering experience as a young girl, it sets the course for the rest of her life. She is determined to make a difference in the world, no matter the consequence, and becomes a highwayman—or woman, as it were—robbing the rich and donating her pilfered gains to the poor. Life-long friend and neighbor, Phineas Dartwell, Earl of Leyburn, suspects his dear friend is up to no good. She’s become evasive, and even worse, he cares that she’s become evasive. When she refuses to confide in him, claiming it’s for his own good, he severs the friendship out of wounded pride and a wounded heart. But when Victoria’s activities are brought to light in the eyes of the magistrate, Phineas must find a way to acquit his friend—and dare he hope, future wife?—of the charges.About the Author...After obtaining a degree in Vocal Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, and years of pursuing a career on the stage, Jerrica left the "glamorous" life of an actress in favor of writing romance. She resides in the New York City area with her husband, cat and 1-year-old princess.
After obtaining a degree in Vocal Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, and years of pursuing a career on the stage, Jerrica left the "glamorous" life of an actress in favor of writing romance. She continues to reside in the New York City area with her husband, cat and their precious daughter.
Firmly on the shelf, Victoria Barclay had a little more freedom than most of the young ladies and after witnessing her mother's abuse toward "the poor" she swore she would find some way to make things right. Her determination to do the right thing really endeared her to me and though she was often naive in her beliefs she was adorable.
How could I not fall in love with one, Phineas Dartwell, the third earl of Leyburn. Finny was her brother’s best friend and when her older sibling took off to places unknown Finny took up the brotherly reins to watch after Victoria. His sense of duty never faltered, his honor and ideals were inspiring alone but it was his love of the creative arts that made me fall for him.
But when Victoria sneaks away from him on numerous occasions to take up the mask and take the rich to task for their shocking greed, Fin begins to grow suspicious of his dearest friend’s sister. He catches her in a part of town that she should never be in and determines to find out what she’s up to. But once he learns that she robs from the poor to fund a hospital for the poor and pays to help many people — sometimes through her own funds — his affection for her grows into something much deeper. And while she was committing a crime, he couldn’t find it in his heart to condemn her. But he must stop her.
Charming is the only word that comes to mind for this story and I cannot quite put my finger on what exactly drew me in, I can honestly say that once I put the story down and it had ended, I felt a little sad that it was over. I truly fell in love the often reckless and naïve Victoria whose good intentions often landed her in deep trouble. Was this book action packed? No. Was there anything really completely outstanding that took my breath away? No, not really. It was wonderfully written, with charming characters and a plot that wheedled its way into my heart. And I truly hated to put it down and will likely read it again. It is definitely a keeper for me.
I really fun little Historical Romance. This is the first book in a series with feisty gals and delightful rogues. This book sets the tone for the series and is terrific. These are clean romances, no steam, but they do have some lovely heart-stopping kisses.
Victoria is a great character, I am always a fan of a girl with courage and pluck. She thumbs her nose at typical things young ladies in London obsess over. A truly engaging and dynamic character. Although, she was a bit slow on the uptake with realizing her feelings.
I really liked Phineas, he is wonderful in his support of his lady. I do so love a guy who realizes what he wants and goes for it. They have a great connection and banter that will bring a smile to your face.
There is a touch of drag in the story, it was too drawn out in her plotting. Perhaps a touch more action or seeing her be the robber would have been nice. While it was an entertaining read it felt longer than a novella.
The mixed narrative is great, swapping between the two leads POVs, helps to bring insight into their actions. Phin might make you sigh with all he does to insure the safety of his love. There is a moment when you might need tissues, Vicky made me tear up a bit!
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Stevie Zimmerman, who is delightful. The British accent suited the setting of the book and was a lovely addition to the narration. She has a delightful way with the character voices. She managed to make them all distinct and consistent. I loved the Irish accent the best. She has a very brisk pace in the read, some might want to play at half speed to keep up, personally I like it quicker. I am definitely looking forward to hearing her read the rest of the series.
There is a weird quirk in the audio, it pauses after each chapter before it starts again. I like a smoother read and this was a distraction.
Overall this is a great story and sweet romance. I usually like the theme of brother's best friend and sister matching up. They have a wealth of connection already built into the relationship, they just need that moment of realization. While this is a short read it is very well paced. I can not wait to see where this series is headed!
I didn't give this much chance but I really liked how it began. The writing was good. The characters could have been more developed but it wasn't a long novel more like a novella. When the characters started to fall in love you could tell the author tried to keep it clean but maybe wasn't used to. So it is cleanish, some sexual innuendo. There was some swearing also. The end got a little silly and fantastic and just rolled up too perfectly.
This book was part of my continued effort to branch out into new genres and to pick up books that I would not normally read. I have been hearing a lot of good things about Regency Romance and it really piqued my interest. I am really glad that I picked up The Robber Bride because I really liked it!
The Robber Bride is a short novel (120'ish pages) about Victoria Barclay. Victoria is from a good family and naturally she is shielded from the plight of the lower classes. But one moment changes all of this - and she becomes determined to help out in any way she can. Now she just has to make sure that no one discovers her questionable methods of helping run a hospital for the poor.
I really liked Victoria - she is determined, headstrong and very articulate. I love her passion and her willingness to do was she feels she needs to do without regarding the consequences to her own standing. Obviously she is typically blind to a certain someone's interest in her but that part feels natural - like it is something she has never considered before.
The whole novel is just very cute and swooney. I am really looking forward to reading the rest of the Daring Debutante novels.
i love this story, another robin hood story where the robin hood is a lady, wow, isn't it more nice story ;).
Great Jerrica ;)
Sweet bgt.. ;)
Cmn sayang krn adanya adegan kissu2 doank ala Young Adult jd direkomendasikan buat teman2 yg pengen bc HR tp yg g suka ada adegan bed scene dan saying cmn ada versi ebook
I just bought this a while ago and enjoyed it immensely. There wasn’t any sex but there was a touch of sexual tension on Finn‘s part so anyone who wants to read a really cute love story this one is for you. As cute as the story was I don’t see where the title of The Robber Bride comes from. I almost considered not getting it for that reason but then my daughter read it and said it was so cute that I decided to get it. Victoria was definitely a robber but she was a Highwayman and she was not a bride until the last few pages so the name doesn’t really fit the book. It could have had a catcher name.
However, I did like Fin/Phineas (what a god-awful name for a hero) and Victoria and Thomas. The only other likable people in the book were the poor she helped. Victoria’s mother, Lady Grantham was a witch and Lady Beecham was a bitch.
The one thing I didn’t like about this book was the lack of descriptions. I really have no clue what Lady Beecham looked like, except at the masquerade ball when she looked like a whore. No idea what Tom looked like either, or Fin, for that matter. And all I remember about Victoria are her “mediocre looks” and her “front teeth that overlapped.” Not exactly the kind of description I want to read for a heroine. Therefore, I can’t see myself reading any other books by this author. Mediocre looks and overlapping teeth are part of my every day world and I read to get out of that world. I want handsome heroes and beautiful heroines or I'm not real interested in reading. And that's my opinion.
As to the narrator: Ms. Zimmerman was ok with her voices but sometime I think she lost track of who was talking. Sometimes Fin's voice was just too feminine and other times it was rather manly. Not the worst narration I've ever heard. I would listen to her again.
I really enjoyed this story. Loved the heroine, Victoria, she was cute and sassy with a mind of her own. The hero, Phin was awesome. He was charismatic and sexy. There was no sex in this book so it is rated G. There is attraction and the mention of "breeches tightening" LOL so there is that.
The story line and plot was good. This book was full of great dialogue, lots of it. Since it was fairly short it wasn't full of filler nonsense. Always a plus not have to read or listen to all that filler nonsense.
The narration was good. I think I like Stevie Zimmerman historical romance narrations than regular contemporary or paranormal. She gave everyone their own distinct voice and the men sounded like men. She could use a little more emotion in her reading but she does do some so it is not so monotone.
I got this as a free on amazon and 1.99 audible for whispersync so a great deal!
But the proposal is far superior to those normally written for regency novels. And it addresses an issue that impacts many today. The oppressor creates a fictitious characterization of the oppressed and it keeps them firmly entrenched in the seat of power while the false narrative invades the psyche of those with no power who takes to romanticizing their oppressors. That's what make racism so lethal. It began with the powerful in their scientific, cultural and religious norms. Now today it's a means of maintaining power by deceiving the white poor or simply the poor. Truth of the matter all political systems today use this one method to gain and maintain power. Brexit, Trump, India, Russia are all using same playbook. India uses religion to divide and rule. But the book highlights what a lot of people deny, class, race and religion are intertwined and those who ignore this fail to see that from ancient to modern western history the greatest influencer of political action is greed. But dresses up differently. Trumpism is cultish but religious, like soccer in Europe. But it works. Why? Because all religion truly is is a common belief held by sufficient, so when Marx said religion is the opium of the masses, he wasn't merely speaking about religion or cultural norms but the guide to wielding political power. Ask Putin, Hitler, Trump, Boris and Mr Brazil... And so many think modernism changed the playbook. But hey, what do I know? But yet the politics that wins elections is Pharisean in nature, manipulating the fears of the masses to retain or gain power. This book is unique because it doesn't use the hatred vs awe dynamics to make its points. It highlights a historical problem and need and showed ways in which that problem was resolved. And for those who didn't know, England's failure in corona is linked to decisions made to defund health in the years prior. But the book was fair, made people people and didn't raise any questions like: is that what they did with colonial wealth? Isn't it ironic? One of the greatest lies about black people is that they are lazy. Yet plantation wealth was used to help finance lifestyles of idleness, the worst kind. But this author doesn't write a book and interlaced it with false notions of moral superiority and yet an insatiable hunger for the very thing to which they are morally superior. So my respect to the author and this book. But I'm not your regular audience. I am black, well educated and a scholar in literature. The Caribbean I come from. Have a good one. And thanks.
Enjoyable Short Read. This book is about Victoria Barclay, daughter of the Viscount Grantham, who as a child felt sincere compassion for the poor even though her parents thought the poor to be thieves and degenerates. As an adult, Victoria becomes a highwayman so that she can rob those who are wealthy and lack compassion. The money she steals goes to fund a hospital in a poor part of town. Victoria's best friend and next door neighbor, Phineas Dartwell, Earl of Leyburn, figures it out, and as he tries to dissuade her from her illicit activity, realizes that he has fallen in love with her. Ultimately, she refuses to heed his warnings, and Fin has to step in to save her when she is caught by the cops.
The book is a good short read (97 pages on my nook), and the romance is clean, appropriate for 16+. The editing is done well, and I did not encounter the usual problems with romance novels. My only problem with the book is the legal portion, which is so far off base that it is ridiculous.
**********MINOR SPOILER ALERT********* After the heroine pleads guilty in court, the jury finds her not-guilty based on all the testimony of the people she's helped over the years. Ridiculous. After someone pleads guilty, there is no way that a jury could find that person not guilty. There would be no trial and no opportunity for the jury to deliberate. So, while happy, this happily ever after is seriously contrived. It would have been better if she were simply released from jail based on the lack of witnesses rather than going through a "trial." **********END SPOILER***********
Other than the inaccurate legalities, I enjoyed the book.

Some lighthearted far fetched fun with a totally OTT and unbelievable ending. h is daughter of rich snobby parents who ignore her so she thumbs her nose and is secretly a highwayman(lady) robbing people to pay for a hospital she funds for the poor people of London. H is her absent for much of the story brothers best friend who has looked out for her and suspects something is not right Friendship turns to love for both as he susses her out but she is caught in the end and sent to jail. We are then supposed to believe she got off Scot free for her HEA with the H because she was a “Robin Hood” type doogooder ans she was found not guilty in court despite admitting she had been robbing people for 2 years!

Interesting premise, and good characters (hero and heroine). While I enjoyed the start of the story, I didn't like the climax or the ending. I just didn't feel like it made sense or worked. I wanted to see more character growth for the heroine and we really didn't get that in terms of her reasons for being a thief and seeing/believing that there were alternatives to obtaining the money she needed to do the good she wanted. There were story lines/threads left hanging.
Great novel! Love A Story Where The Heroine Helps The Poor, Downtrodden
I like that the heroine saw a need despite what her mother did. It was wrong of her to decide to become a highway robber of the rich but her heart was in the right place. I love how a friendship turns into a forever love.
Brilliant! Wow! Now that's what I call a marvelous proposal! Such an amazing climax to a beautifully written story with caring characters and a fascinating theme, this book held me captive and I loved every second of it. Of course I am recommending it! Enjoy!
Such a lovely read and one to encourage all of its readers to acts of charity. Vickie may have done things wrong, but her heart was in the right place. Good story!
