Taking the ultimate example found in Jesus, Philip Greenslade draws on his experience and enthusiasm to outline the characteristics of a true leader. "Leadership" offers an inspiring and challenging model for Christian leaders today through four fascinating sections. This book is more than a selection of techniques, methodologies and psychological insights. Instead, it takes us to the heart of the unfolding character of the leader God requires, by reminding us of biblical ideals found in Christ, Paul and other great saints in Scripture history.
Best book on leadership from a biblical perspective I have ever read, no question In my decades of involvement in Christian ministry, I have read a lot of so-called leadership books that were lightweight, uber-spiritual, or designed to appeal to people who really have no business leading anyone. It had gotten to the point where I dreaded reading anything on leadership written by a Church leader -- especially the puffery that comes out of emergent, megachurch, charismatic, or women's ministries. There were a few standout exceptions but only a few. Having served in the military and been involved in military and executive leadership training since I was a teenager, I tire of the soft-soap approach much of the church world calls "leadership." But thankfully a pastoral and missionary leader in our Fellowship recommended Philip Greenslade's "Leadership: Reflections on Biblical Leadership Today" in a conference sermon. I usually write down any book recommeded by a speaker for further research and consideration but I was skeptical about this one... my wife ordered it as a gift for me and I dutifully applied myself to reading it... Wow, to say this is a great leadership book and well-worth your time and investment would not sufficiently convey how important this book really is. Philip Greenslade is an experienced churchman and pastor who nails it with this vital book on Biblical Leadership. Reminding us that leadership principles are universal and the Bible is a book about leaders -- shepherds, prophets, kings, judges, pastors, elders, soldiers, and apostles -- and their relationship to the people and the committed followers (disciples) they lead is probably the most important accomplishment of this book from the opening chapter on. Greenslade's experiences are universal -- overcoming a problem I often find when a Christian writer over-emphasizes leadership examples or models that are from their own denominational perspective. This book is dense with Biblical details, comprehensive in its topics, and rich in practical examples. I especially like how the book is organized starting with "Why Leadership?" (The necessity of strong leadership), the art of Following Leadership, and a breakdown into the different styles and aspects that are needed in Leadership Today. I wish I had read this 25 years ago -- it would have made me a much better shepherd and leader. And while this book is aimed at leaders in a church setting, its comprehensive approach to leadership means anyone who wants some insight into moral and ethical leadership and isn't afraid of Biblical examples will benefit from this book. Highly Recommended... for leaders in Church, military, business, political, education and governmental institutions. And anyone who wants to learn more about leadership.
