After all these years, I've finally read it. Did I know everything already? Yup. Did I still cry at the end?? Of course. Does my bitterness remain at the final three volumes never getting adapted?? Abso-fucking-lutely. It couldn't have been more than five episodes!!
Random thoughts:
Mai is a cutie patootie for asking for the addresses.
Corerning Naru is the only war to get things out of him, lol.
All hail King Yasuhara!!
Naru being an ingignant teen, all :"I dOn'T hAvE tO aNsWeR," blah blah, you're just a loser sweetheart, accept it. Your friends have.
Takigawa!!! You silent genius, Sherlock Holmes, YOU!! Mr "I was bored and started thinking" Okay, Shikamaru, I see you.
I love when Lin is amused and smiling with them earnestly.
YES!! I noticed all the details!! THANK YOU!!
Naru is masking so hard.
Yeah, I 100% believe that Naru was a troubled kid. Getting into fights, caushing issues, rough around the edges and the sweet kind-hearted Gene was always getting between him and his problems, protecting him, taking the blame.
You know what? Naru is absolutely right about Mai flling for Gene. And Mai has her closure too now. She can move on.
I love this series so much! I just can't get enough of the characters and the blood chilling stories and yet, it is also so heart touching. The last three books, I was struggling so hard not to cry. The friendships these characters have, the amazing character development, and the awesome mysteries around each person, but especially Naru, made it impossible for me to put them down.
****SPOILER ALERT FROM HERE ON*****
But dang it!!! Why did Eugene have to be dead? Why did he have to be murdered. I can't stand the ending. I want to scream. It's so bittersweet, but more heart wrenching than sweet. I want more. I want so much more. And I wanted Naru and Mai to get together, dang it! Or for Eugene to somehow miraculously not to be dead so that I could ship Mai and him together.
All in all, this is one of my favorite mangas ever. The best. A must read!
Just for starters, as I said previously, I read a scanlation of this because there is no official English version.
But, wow! I really loved the creepy themes of this series! I enjoyed all of the recurring characters as well (yes, even Ayako). Would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves spooky paranormal stories! Just, maybe don't read it alone at night, haha.
finally finished re-reading the whole series! brought back so many memories from when i was still in uni procrastinating by reading mangas, lmao. gotta say that the bittersweet feeling about naru and gene was still the same even though this time i was fully aware about what happened to gene. still hoping we got a bit more of closure about the gene accident, too.
This is my second time reading Ghost Hunt, but the bittersweet ending still gets to me. How did that Incubus song go? “Love hurts, but sometimes it’s a good hurt and it feels like I’m alive.” (interestingly, this is also very appropriate when it comes to Mai’s feelings for Naru)
One of the best horror manga I've read so far. I just wish that they had the part why and how Gene died or an arc where he is the protagonist. I really love to see Noll and Gene's childhood life. Also I wish that there's a season 2 of its anime.
I read this series back when it was first released in English when I was in my teens. As an adult I remember thinking fondly of it, but being sad about the ending but couldn't remember why. I went back and re-read it after hearing someone mention it was one of the best paranormal-type manga/anime out there. And then I got to volume 12 and remembered why I felt the way I did. I wonder if that was a contributing factor in the anime ending the way it did.
It's tough enough that Del Ray didn't release the 12th and final volume in English for whatever reason, nor that the original manga was canceled rather abruptly. I hear there is a sequel series out there that covers the final light novels, but I haven't read them yet.
On another note, I was today years old when I discovered that my other favorite horror anime, Shiki (the artwork is horrible, laughable, TRASH, but the story is terrifying) is by the same author!
I have no idea how I am going to rate this volume yet. While I loved this final volume for Ghost Hunt, it was full of mind-fudges and huge reveals and explanations, that when I go back to read the previous volumes or rewatch the anime, I will not be able to look at it the same way with what I know now. After reading this, I can really see how the entire story has been building up to this final volume, even things from the first chapter is relevant to what we find out. I loved how by the end, you can see how the authors knew how they were going to build this story from the very beginning. But I don't know how I feel about the whole Gene thing, that was a huge mind-fudge, but that's all I will say to avoid spoilers. This volume will probably be 5/5 stars in the end, but I need to sleep on it and let my emotions calm down before making my final decision.
A bittersweet ending. Makes me kind of sad to be finishing this great manga.
I wonder how Naru actually feels about Mai. Does he really like her and did he find it okay that she - quite literally- said she preferred his dead brother? (Which, kinda does make sense, but still heart-wrenching) I also figured it was Eugene the whole time in her dreams the moment Naru said he had a brother. It was kind of obvious.
There's definitely no insta-love in this series, compared to other shoujo, thank God. I like how the authors handled Naru and Mai's relationship at the end. Didn't force anything.
Great manga though the end was a bit too talky and too much information for my taste. I loved Mai`s ending though! I wish that Shiho Inada had staggered Naru`s mystery, but at the same time I understand her personal circumstances and am thankful that she gave her readers answers.
