Courted by the dark, and in love with the light, Rae must choose her path, or face the burden of Rupturing the world once more.

This is a difficult review to write because all in all I really do think Penelope Fletcher is an AMAZING writer. I'm really impressed with her imagination, her descriptive power, and her ability to create truly engaging characters.

Yet, there is one thing that just made this book extremely difficult to get through. And that is the magical bond that Rae shares with Breandan. I really, really hate it. Now I understand that some readers may love the idea of an intense magical love that is foisted onto the lead characters. A love that if not satisfied has the power to literally destroy everything and everyone nearby when the lovers are reunited. It just didn't work for me. It robs Rae of choice. Even though at one point Rae argues that she chooses Breandan of her own free will, it has already been established that this is not the case. The second they touched she was bonded to him and would never be able to choose to love someone else. I also tired of this bond being shoved down our throats constantly. I get it. They're bonded. They have to be together, etc. This one aspect of the story just wore me down and made it hard for me to keep reading. The bond actually cripples Rae as a character, which was very distressing. There were even times when I felt the character was sacrificed so that the bond could be stressed.

For instance, Rae is fighting for her life and suddenly gives up. Nothing about this girl has ever shown her to be a quitter. Ever. She's feisty, tough, and a born leader (whether she realizes it or not). Yet, she just gives in to death and waits for it to happen. Which allows Breandan to reach her through their bond and empower her to fight. *facepalm*

Yet...

The world building is AMAZING. The villains are very easy to hate. The supporting cast is awesome. The action scenes are easy to follow and very exciting. The magical elements are very intriguing. The main plot line is well-conceived and well-executed. I could say that I love everything about this book except the insta-love magical bond. I really wish the author had allowed her two leads to slowly fall in love and come together in a more realistic way. I think the story would have been better for it.

Do I recommend this book? Yes, I recommend this book and the first one if you are into insta-love, magical bonds, overwhelming unrealistic love affairs. This book would definitely work for people who love that type of setup (and I know there are many who do). If you're tired of insta-love scenarios, this may not be the book for you. Like I said, the author writes a kick ass story. She's amazingly talented.

I will read the third book because I really do like the characters and the story line. I want to know what happens.

P.S. The author is English and uses the UK spelling for many words. These are not misspelled words or typos.

I have died and went to fairy heaven!!

This is the 2nd novel in the Rae Wilder series and it didn't disappoint!! It doesn't start with a bang like Demon Girl but it does start with you finding out more about Rae, her relationships, powers etc but don't worry it doesn't take long to kick in with the good stuff!!

In this novel you are introduced to loads of new characters that twist the basis of the story and if anything draws you in further, if you think you know how the story is going to turn out then be prepared for loads of twists and turns and some unexpected situations.

You cannot read this novel and skip past the whole Rae/Breandan/Thomas triangle. I think I went through a whole bunch of emotions when it came to these three characters. My heart broke, I cried, smiled, protective even popped in there. I really wanted things to work out well for her as she has been through enough already but it wouldn't be a great story if there wasn't challenges and decisions in there for her to deal with.

This has got everything you could want in a book, romance, heart ache, hurt, revenge, pain not to mention its dark and the author isn't afraid to beat up a character of two!!
The writing is fantastic, I didn't think it could get better than the 1st book but I was just obsessed if not more the further I read on.

If you loved the Demon Girl I would seriously recommend that you read Demon Day, I found by the end of reading this novel I was dying for the 3rd book to be here already!!

Hope you all enjoy as much as I did :)

It was very hard for me to get past the MANY spelling mistakes. I understan that this was an independently published book, but she has got to have someone who can help her to EDIT!

That being said, I will probably still read the 3rd book of the series only because I want to know what happens to the characters. I hope that the 3rd book will not be filled with and consumed by the "bond" like this one was. Yes, I know that was a main detail of the story, but spending the first part the story expounding on it was unnecessary. As a reader, I understood the bond without having it shoved down my throat on every other page. Maybe it was just me, though.

WARNING ~ SPOILERS IN REVIEW.
Wow ~ what a fab book! Action packed and fast paced throughout the whole story ~ and definitely not for kids as the sexual tension positively vibrates throughout the book. Rae is a passionate, sexual creature (as demonstrated by her desire for Tomas, despite her growing love for Breandan). There is a particularly sexy scene where Rae and Breandan are dancing with the Shifters, in what is obviously an act of erotic foreplay. Later in the book, they are separated and their enforced distance means that the bond builds and builds until their reunion is positively explosive and extremely sexy and erotic. The reunion scene is brilliantly written, compulsive reading, truly electrifying and realistically passionate.

The book is unpredictable. It has twists and turns that I did not foresee. Characters reappear that I didn’t expect to see again. Characters that appear trustworthy and honourable deceive and harm. In addition to the mounting sexual tension in the story, the violence also escalates to horrific proportions. The book’s pace increases as the story progresses and the ending is as unexpected as it is violent.

Only one of part of the story seemed strangely contrived to me ~ and that was the visit to Papa Obe. They left a particular situation, went to visit Papa Obe and then went back to the original situation. It seemed a foolish and time consuming thing to do when time was an issue with them. I know that a protective spell was secured but it didn’t really add to the story in any way.
This was, overall, a really good read ~ I was really tired last night, had trouble keeping my eyes open but still couldn’t put the book down. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I was amazed at how fast Rae has matured in this book. She is coming to terms and accepting who she is.I loved this one more than the first one but was very sad when the vampire died.I wanted her to be with him but then I also like Breandan also.I can plainly see how torn she was but Breandan is her mate and i think she chose the right person but i was shedding some tears when Tomas died.I could actually see the whole fighting seen (including Rae) in my mind. I knew from the start he had some devilish plain for seeking Rae out but I also knew that he loved her. Okay now her friend turning into a zombie was some creepy stuff!! Breandan getting wings was wonderful.I di not like the fact that she let her nerves get the best of her at very important times and that she is actually very slow at catching on to clues or hints but overall i loved this book I am so anxious about the third!!!!Move over Twilight saga cause her comes Rae!!!This book and Demon Girl are now some of my favorite books!!!!

I liked the second book better than the first if you can beleive it. How often does that actually happen? I thought the main character Rae was a stronger character growing as the book went along. I really enjoyed this author and will see what else she has out. I can't wait for the next Demon book which apparently is supposed to be out in September! So fortunately, I won't have to wait too long :)

this book was spectacular!
i loved each and every climb to each and every climax. theres so many events that happen in this novel that you have to keep up with each and every person,(i noticed i put person, id like to change that to character being that not all of them are "human".) because your never sure when someone will be brought back up. There are also so many deadly turns that you're caught like a deer in headlights by the sudden surprise of the event.
the only problem i have with this novel is the end. i felt a little rushed as if to just get it over with.
all of a sudden rae and tomas are walking and then theres a kiss and then they walking down a empty city. what? excuse me, what just happened? i get what he did to her but i felt like it didnt quiet belong. then when the answer to what the smell is, its just there. another detail that needed a little bit more of an explanation. i felt like that needed alot more detail rather then, "their dead, because they were there..." i mean in the first novel that person( did it again, i mean character) plays a big part of the story, so for the second book to just "throw him away like nothing" seems a bit unfair.

overall... GREAT BOOK. pick it up and read it!

far better than the first in the series, but i will definitely not be reading the last installment. again, while the storyline showed significant potential, the execution left much to be desired. there were far less grammatical, spelling and syntax errors in this edition, but there were still enough errors to distract from the story line. at times, i had to re-read parts multiple times, just to understand what was going on.

in order to write well, a writer really needs to spend plenty of time reading. i am just not sure that this author has done the required work. otherwise, how could she not understand that the word "smelt" is not past tense for the verb "to smell." also, i believe the phrase she was looking for was "for all intents and purposes," not "for all intensive purposes."

also, books that are 760 pages long really should have manageable chapters. chapters that are 100pages long dont qualify.

these things could all have easily been dealt with by hiring an editor. but i have little patience for authors who cut corners and jeopardize their work just to say that they successfully published. publishing a book is something to be proud of, when you take the time to ensure that it is not a hot mess.

Well, I really wanted to like this book but it wasn't as well written as the first one. There was too much internal discussion/debates where I was left bored and waiting for something to actually happen. There's going to be another released in September to continue the story and I'll probably read it but it won't be a high priority. This book could have benefited from a strong editor to help keep the storyline moving instead of go-go-go then stop and think for a while then go-go-go. I do like the characters and each book so far has a definite path. Let's hope the third book in the series improves on the internal discussions parts.

Okay so as much as I enjoyed the last book I loved this one a katrillion (made up my own word) times more. It had way more action and lots more hotness. The fae magnetism and the powerful relationship between Rae and Breandan was great! With this new installment came more controversy, new characters, and new relationship dynamics. We also got some insight and backstory on some of the other characters. I am still reeling from this tale and can't wait to read the next one:)

It's taking me some time getting through this as I'm preoccupied with the spelling & grammatical errors. It would have been better to have a proofreader go through this before it was issued. The story is really good though so it is worth the preoccupation!

It's been too long to go back to this so it is being moved to my couldn't finish shelf. Really sorry Penelope (author) but this book would have benefited from a thorough proofread. :-(

I just hate how dumb and stubborn the main character is... Ms. Fletcher really needs to proof read her work how is it possible that you confuse to too and two really you don't need an editor to cath these silly mistakes. The lack of proof reading makes your books very hard to read and enjoy if you're going to charge money for your books in Barnes and Noble please proof read.

Disappointing

Penelope Fletcher is one of my favorite authors. I absolutely fell head over heels for her Alien Warrior series (Venomous, ThunderClaw and Bhyr). I decided to read some of her earlier work, that being the Rae Wilder series.

I got through book one okay but book two (Compel) has been a drag to read. I'm about a third of the way through and all they've done is run around looking for Devlin, stopping here and there to have extremely awkward conversations with A LOT of introspection on behalf of the main character, Rae. I'm bored and frustrated. I don't like giving up on books but I don't think I can finish this book.

I'm very happy to say her Alien Warrior series is powerful and riveting and I loved the characters. Compel is just...meh.

I like it

I know there have been mixed reviews about these books but I enjoy them they have a mixture of characters and it’s easy to read the characters are on a journey and I don’t think you will be able to judge the books unless you complete the journey with them

Need chapters

I like this book but don’t love it. There were times when it spent to long in description and I skipped ahead by pages. I was still caught up in wanting to know what happened but I felt we spent far to much time in Rae’s indecision.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unimpressed, May 22, 2011

Immediately after reading Penelope Fletcher's Demon Girl I purchased the second installment in this series Demon Day. The final Installment in this 3 book series is scheduled for release September 2011. I am going to write this review for the people who have read book one and are debating on the purchase of book 2. As a result this review may contain spoilers for book 1 Demon Girl.

In all honestly I was unimpressed with the editing AGAIN. Granted, some improvement has been made. However, it continues to have grammatical errors. An example of the types of errors in this book is the use of a word that is phonetically similar yet has a different definition. One such example are the words Know and No. In the first book Penelope Fletcher did her own editing work. She was plagued with comments and reviews on the grammatical errors. In one of these reviews she replied and mentioned she'd hire an editing house for this book. PF you mean to tell me this is professional work? My feeling is this editing must improve it seriously hinders the overall reading experience. No one wants a reading experience that includes an urge to pull out a virtual red pen and re-edit a paragraph.
The art work on the ebook covers are lovely. They are among the pretties fairy wing depictions I've seen. Excellent work!

Before I review Ms. Penelope Fletcher's current work, let's recap: Our main character Rea is in an unhappy place, emotionally vulnerable, and a total wreck in all areas of her current life. She knows she is a fairy, to be more exact a priestess. Has learnt her mother is dead and is the reason the ferries are in such an awful state. Her brother is now her protector and her only family. That means she's plus one in my book she originally started with no family. Her new world is unbalanced and chaotic at best. Rea witnessed the murder of her human BFF Alex. She is magically bound to a Fairy and blood bound to a Vampire. Said Vampire and Fairy hate each other. She is filled with anger and is seeking revenge. Rea is the proud owner of 3 very important and popular coins/talisman (???). Needless to say the last two days have been horrid. In this installment we find Rea was successful in saving her vampire and wakes with him. As she lays with her vampire Rea feels she needs to reach out in search of her fairy. Turns out he is right out side guarding the cave she and her vampire are hidden from the daylight in. Out she comes they reunite. Things get heavy rather quickly. The reality of what her life entails is emotionally draining. She tends to wonder, is gathered up and bathed. Rea is visited by the aspiring Fairy Lord. She's hit with the reality of her situation. Rea is told as the priestess she is expected to unite with the fairy lord and reproduce. She agrees to put up a façade in an attempt to keep order and peace among her people. Rea makes it clear to all parties involved she seeks the death of her BFF murderer and is repulsed by the fairy lord and refuses to have child with him. They have tense words and during a private conversation which included her fairy, his brother the aspiring fairy lord, and her brother and protector during which she demands they follow a trail that may or may not lead to Alex's murderer. While desperately following this trail her fairy and her get hot and heavy, Kill a massive wear-cat and end up asking said dead wear-cat's alpha for assistance. The alpha agrees and a pact is made. Rea, her brother and fairy will assist in recovering his twin daughters from the cleric. They are being held captive on Temple grounds. This leads to an amazing adventure. In this book Rea matures and becomes less selfish. She experiences several highs and lows. I'd like to say more but do not want to spoil the story for those of you that decide to purchase this ebook.

Let's cut to the chase you want to know would I recommend this book? My answer is Yes I would. I myself am invested in Rea's world. So much so that I am willing to suffer the piss poor editing in an effort to enjoy Ms. Penelope Fletcher's story.
So why the low star count? I over looked the editorial work in my review of book 1 and am unwilling to do so this time. I expect professional work for my money. The first installment Demon Girl was free this is not the case for Demon Day. Bad editing results in the reader getting having to go back several pages n an attempt to grasp Rea's circumstances.

A side not to Ms. Penelope Fletcher: Get a new editing house. Keep the cover artist please. Continue writing. You have talent and hopefully will improve with time. Your protagonist has captured my interest and I will purchase book 3.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Confession 1: The first three Rae Wilder novels were the first independently published e-books I'd ever read.

Confession 2: Up until then, I was pretty much oblivious to the rise in the indie e-book market. As an aspiring author, working on my book Chasing Pavements, I should have been hyper-aware of this new trend in the market. Even worse is the fact that it was a friend of mine, one who hardly reads books (well, most of my friends hardly read books!), that alerted me to this exciting avenue available to unsigned writers. Very poor form on my part!

I won't be too harsh on myself though - Chasing Pavements wasn't a planned project and until I started writing it, I hadn't been in author-mode for years.

Anyway, the year was 2012, the month March, my manuscript for Chasing Pavements constantly being edited and re-edited, when I became aware of how easy it had become to self-publish. After some Google searches, I came across e-book distributor Smashwords. I can't remember exactly how, but I think I stumbled upon Demon Girl (now renamed Glamour) by indie author Penelope Fletcher through one of the searches on the site - perhaps on the first page of the highest-rated free e-books chart? The book cover (since been updated) and synopsis grabbed me and the favourable reviews on the book page enticed me to download the book.

From the very first chapter, the book had me hooked! And after the introduction of the vampire, I knew there was no turning back - I was going to read the entire series! The author creates the kind of world you want to jump into, and introduces characters that you instantly develop a connection to. I finished it in two and half days and wished it was longer! I would have liked to have spent a bit more time with Rae at Temple, learned more about her day-to-day life as a Disciple before discovering her real identity and destiny.

The story continues in book two, Compel (previously Demon Day), and is probably my favourite out of the first three novels. With so many supernatural creatures in the mix, we really were spoiled! The author explores these intriguing species in detail and doesn’t brush past them in order to focus on the main characters, so you are not left wondering about their roots and origins. When I finished the third book Enchant, (previously Demon Dark), I couldn’t believe that I had to wait for another book to find out how Rae's story ends. At the same time, Rae is one of those characters, and this is one of those series that you don’t mind having the story extended.

This was a good follow up book to Demon Girl. It’s about twice as long as Demon Girl so there’s lots more action and story development and it also introduces many more characters giving the book a lot more back stories.

My biggest praise about this book was that it answered a lot of lingering questions from Demon Girl. Things were explained and expanded upon which helped to link together some of the threads nicely. Of course a LOT more questions popped up along the way but I’m confident they will be explained in the third and final book.

The main thread of the story follows Rae as she, Connal and Breandon attempt to hunt Devlin. Rae wants revenge for the death of her best friend and she also needs to get the powerful faery book from him so that she can unite demon kind and crown Breandon’s brother as the true High Lord. Along the way they meet a shifter pack who needs their help. The shifter alpha’s daughters have been kidnapped by the human clerics and the shifters agree to help Rae track Devlin if she helps bring back their daughters. The story goes on a massive whirlwind when Rae finds herself as the next kidnapped victim of the clerics and comes to realise why they are kidnapping demons – for Demon Day.

As with Demon Girl, the story literally is non stop. We as a reader are thrown from one terrifying situation to another with not much rest in between. There are some major developments made in relation to the Breandon and Tomas issue and Rae comes to realise that neither will give her up to the other without a fight.

Just as an aside note I think I should point out that even though most of this book can be classed as YA, there are some violent scenes and a storyline revolving around torture which is explicitly described. And also a mild(ish) sex scene.

Star wise, ive given it the same as Demon Day (3 stars) because I personally would have liked a little break from all the mayhem and madness of the storyline in which to just enjoy the characters themselves. And also because the grammatical errors in this one are actually worse than the first. I think the author needs to get a proof reader because sometimes this made me halt reading a sentence and have to read it back a couple of times to figure it out.

But other than those small things I really enjoyed reading Demon Day and look forward to Demon Dark coming out in September and finding out what conclusion can be brought to this exciting series.

(Second Review)
Well I decided to give it another shot and finish the book. I'm glad I did because once Rae gets taken it gets much better. I still absolutely hate when Rae and Brendan come together. I can't stand how this "bond" is really shoved in our faces like we don't get it. We got it they are bonded, they are in love, they feed off each other and belong to each other. I believe the word used a lot was "MINE" like a two year old and a toy. Anyways, the ending where she is taken to the vampire nest was confusing as heck! I'm not sure how that happened and where all her new demon friends went??? But of course Brendan comes and saves the day. However, the question of what took him so long to get to the Temple while she was being beaten senseless is still a mystery.

All in all if you can get through the first half of the book and deal with the grueling descriptions of how perfect Brendan is and how she marvels over him non stop, then I think it's worth the read.

***Update*** Gonna give it another shot! Hope it gets better...

(First Review)
I am sad to say I have stopped reading this book! I borrowed it on my Nook so at least I did not pay for it:( I will say that I was surprised by the first book I really liked it. This one however was so so so boring! On the Nook this is over 700 pages. I don't know about the paper version but that is what it is on the Nook. So I got to about page 250 and just said forget it!

Now I have only stopped reading 3 books in my life. The reason I stopped this one was because I was soooooo tired of Rae describing Brendan. For crying out loud how many times are we gonna read about the color of his eyes, the way the sun hits his face and the smell of his scent bla, bla, bla! I wanted some action! There was nothing but descriptions of how lost in Brendan Rae was. We got it! Move on and let the story take shape. I was so over it I really wanted something to happen ANYTHING! Even the fight between Brendan and Alec was silly at best. Really the only thing that caught my interest was the daughters that were captured by the humans. I kinda would like to know what happens but as I tried to read on I was thrown into another description of Brendan's godly looks. I was over it by then and just clicked out of this book and moved on to another. Sorry, wish I could say it was better:(

First I will say that editing was poorly executed again in this 2nd book, but once I got used to the typos, I simply ignored them; it does not really deter from the captivating storyline. Rae is mourning Alex’s death, while also having to pretend to be Lochlann’s mate for the sake of all fairykind. They set out to catch Devlin and take back the Grimoire and remove him as High Lord of the fairies. While going on a rescue for 2 daughters of a shifter pack, she gets caught once again by the Clerics, (whom she once trusted) and is tortured in ways she didn’t think possible. She escapes, falls under a compelling spell from Tomas (whom she also trusted) and he takes her to meet his coven Queen, only to be imprisoned, though under Tomas’s watchful eye so none of the other vamps get to her. She learns of Devlin’s death, Breandan arrives looking for her, and as she knew was bound to one day happen, Breandan and Tomas go head-to-head in a fight to the death. She doesn’t want to see Tomas dead, but neither does she want Breandan dead. In an attempt at keeping both alive, she intermingles in the fight between the two, and (I was totally appalled at this) Breandan actually strikes her, several times during this fight; until Tomas is defeated by Breandan’s hands. (I was a bit sad also at reading this, but I guess it was inevitable; in order for her and Breandan to be happy together, the bloodbond to Tomas had to come to an end, one way or another). She is devastated and once again she lots someone she cared for.

Rae has become more confident in whom and what she is, though she still doubts she is the one destined to lead the demons in the war that will bring them together or vanquish their race… I won’t spoil anymore for those of you who plan to read it, but will say this: READ IT!!!! You won’t regret it. I’m now reading the third and I’m enjoying it! =)

Grieving the death of her friend at the hand of dark magics, Rae is full of hate and vengeance. Tracking Devlin and his followers across demon territory, she is forced to turn to the local shifter pack for help. Tricked into rescuing the pack Alpha’s daughters from the Temple, she learns there really is no place more dangerous than home.

Breandan the fairy is done being patient. He wants Rae to stand by his side and refuses any claim they are not destined to be. Unsure, Rae denies him the right to have her, but will the urges of her nature and the strength of their bond allow her to walk away? Then there is Tomas, the alluring vampire who needs her help. But what exactly does he expect of her, and is the cost of helping him worth turning her back on life itself?

Courted by the dark, and in love with the light, Rae must choose her path, or face the burden of Rupturing the world once more.

To be honest it took me a minute to remember what happen in the first book, but then I caught up I loved it, The Ending Cliff (hanger)I hate My heart is broken for my Vampire. Aww but we saw another side of Breandan loved that!

This book was awesome! Every part of it! Poor Rae, how hard it must of been torn between two totally different kinds of loves. Even though she knew who she would be with and never turn her back on, but having a blood tie to another. Never mind having to find away to to step into shoes she was born for and did not want, yet having no choice. Being betrayed so bad by one she trusted yet fighting for him. Standing up for the ones who hated her to the core and even after being tortured by them! Standing by and accepting she had to watch someone she did care for die, letting that happen. So much went on in this book, I sound like I am rambling but I have so much to express without giving away the whole book! I am starting on the next one right now so I can find out what happens next!

I highly recommend this book, but you have to start with the first book to truly understand everything that happens.
