IF you know nothing of Gabriele D'Annunzio,Italy's most notorious proto-fascist,this is a novel which may make little or no sense to you! But the novel, told by his long-time secretary, confidante & close observer,Tommaso, really challenges the view of D'Annunzio as a harmless lunatic with strange, often bisexual, lesbian or queer, artistic friends. He was clearly a force of malevolence & confusion. MacBeth's literary style is interesting;it is perfect for the subject,D'Annunzio...grandiloquent,ostentatious & at times, poetic.I enjoyed the experience but not one for the faint-hearted.One or two scenes will remain long in my memory.I'll say no more.
