Rate this book
This classic guide to homesteading is based on solid, practical techniques that remain useful to everyone who wants to learn country skills and increase their self-sufficiency. By turns philosophical and instructional, Ed and Carolyn Robinson share their pioneering approach to efficiently growing vegetables, raising livestock, and building farm structures. Since it was first published in 1943, The “Have-More” Plan has inspired generations of homesteaders to make the most out of whatever land they have available.

I am a sucker for old guides and vocational books like this one.

This book, first published more than 60 years ago, was written for people moving from the city to the country. It guides you through the steps necessary to develop a small family farm. Very quaint. They describe what we would normally call the front yard as the "public lawn" and the back yard is the "private lawn." You also get lessons on the proper application of DDT. Plenty of quick tips, too. Among my favorites: "If you want to interest your wife in home food production, plan to get her a quick freezer." The authors even give you costs-and-returns tables to estimate cash income from your farm. Everything in this wonderful book is so perfectly and impossibly idyllic. A real hands-on, rugged can-do charmer!

Do you know what a squab is? Did you know that there were no less than four dairy goat magazines published in the 1940s (subscription $1 per year)? Do you know how to select trees in your wood lot for cutting? I do...because I read "The 'Have-More' Plan"!

I'd love giving it a try!

Originally written after WWII, this is probably the first modern homesteading book. The premise is simple: Have a small homestead (not a farm), while one member of the family also works away from home. While some short sections of the book are dated (for example, the authors use pesticides), this book is well worth reading if you want to homestead or are currently homesteading. It offers TONS of personal experience stories, and covers many topics modern homesteading books don't (like having a woodlot, stocking a pond, housekeeping, and more - plus often interesting advice on raising foul, goats, cows, pigs, sheep, rabbits, bees, and more.
