Uwe Timm
85 books114 followersUwe Timm was the youngest son in his family. His brother, 16 years his senior, was a soldier in the Waffen SS and died in Ukraine in 1943. Decades later, Uwe Timm approached his relationship with his father and brother in the critically acclaimed novel In my brother's shadow.
After working as a furrier, Timm studied Philosophy and German in Munich and Paris, achieving a PhD in German literature in 1971 with his thesis: The Problem of Absurdity in the Works of Albert Camus. During his studies, Timm was engaged in leftist activities of the 1960s. He became a member of the Socialist German Student Union and was associated with Benno Ohnesorg. From 1973 to 1981 he was a member of the German Communist Party. Three times Timm has been called as a writer-in-residence to several universities in English-speaking countries: in 1981 to the University of Warwick, in 1994 to Swansea and in 1997 to the Washington University in St. Louis. He has also been a lecturer at universities in Paderborn, Darmstadt, Lüneburg and Frankfurt.
Timm started publishing in the early 1970s and became known to a larger audience in Germany after one of his children's books, Rennschwein Rudi Rüssel, was turned into a movie. Today he is one of the most successful contemporary authors in Germany. His books Die Entdeckung der Currywurst (The Invention of Curried Sausage) and Am Beispiels meines Bruders (In my brother's shadow) can both be found on the syllabi of German schools. His readers usually appreciate Timm's writing style, which he himself calls "die Ästhetik des Alltags" ("the aesthetics of everyday life"). Timm imitates everyday storytelling by using everyday vocabulary and simple sentences and generally tries to imitate the way stories are orally told. His works often indirectly link with each other by taking up minor characters from one story and making this character the main character of another work. For example, a minor character like Frau Brücker from Johannisnacht is taken up as a main character in his book Die Entdeckung der Currywurst. Timm's works also tend to have autobiographical features and often deal with the German past or are set in the German past.

Neste seu livro Uwe Timm aborda a sua amizade com Benno Ohnesorg, dando-nos a conhecer um pouco de quem este era como pessoa e qual o seu percurso de vida até este ter decidido estudar literatura. Ohnesorg foi baleado e acabou por morrer durante uma manifestação estudantil contra o Xá do Irão, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi (que tinha ido assistir a uma ópera), em Berlim (na RFA) nos anos sessenta.
Para além de algumas referências literárias a autores debatidos entre ambos, ficamos a conhecer também alguns pormenores auto-biográficos de Timm no seu percurso como estudante de literatura e na perseguição do seu sonho de vir a ser escritor.
Gostava de ter ficado a conhecer um pouco mais acerca de Ohnesorg, mas o tema do livro é mesmo a amizade entre ambos. Senti que, por vezes, as "interferências" literárias a este e aquele autor no meio da narrativa quebravam um pouco o ritmo e nem sempre consegui compreender devidamente o seu porquê naquele momento e naquele lugar. A forma como relata a perda, sendo dolorosa, é bonita e o facto dos dois terem começado as suas vidas noutras áreas e depois terem rumado ao sonho de serem escritores deixou-me a pensar... Nunca é tarde para mudarmos o rumo de nada; pelo menos enquanto há vida!
Por fim, e no que respeita ao título da obra, "o aparente trocadilho" entre Freund (amigo) e Fremde (estranho, desconhecido, estrangeiro) pode ficar a dever-se, por um lado, ao facto de Ohnesorg ser simultaneamente um amigo e um estranho para Timm; um estranho porque houve várias coisas que este e até a própria familia só viriam a conhecer após a sua morte; ser introvertido resulta, por vezes, em passar aqui e ali sem que nunca nos tenham conhecido completamente/profundamente e talvez sem que tenhamos tido o tempo necessário para poder deixar a nossa "marca" nos outros, embora isto seja discutivel, bem sei. Por outro lado, o estranho pode, de igual modo, aludir à obra de Albert Camus, "L'Étranger", objecto de discussão entre os dois amigos.
Interessante.

This is the beautifully poetic, sad, emotional and true story of the friendship between the author, Uwe Timm and the student Benno Ohnesorg, who was senselessly shot and killed by a policeman during a demonstration against the Shah of Iran in Berlin in 1967. It is not a biography. It is not a history. Nor is it an attempt to make Benno Ohnesorg a martyr or hero as others have attempted to do. It is purely and simply a story of friendship and of the sorrow that his tragic and senseless death left behind.

Also, mir gefällt dieses Buch überhaupt nicht.
Wenn Sie nicht selbst die Studentenbewegung 1967/68 miterlebt haben, oder aber sich passioniert für diese Zeit oder insbesondere für den Fall Benno Ohnesorg oder für den jungen Uwe Timm höchstpersönlich interessieren, so rate ich Ihnen die Lektüre dringend ab.
Mit jedem Paragraf hüpft die Zeit der Schilderungen wild umher. Das Ganze ist nichts als eine unendliche Reihe Errinerungsdetaillen ohne jeden Zusammenhang.
Das Schreiben ist so durchaus selbstbewußt "poetisch" zugestellt, dass es für mich einer schlichten Selbstdarstellung gleichkommt. (Das mag ja schon angebracht sein, da es sich hier um eine (sehr brüchige) Autobiographie handelt, zu der Ohnesorgs Tod doch anscheinend nur den anfänglichen Impuls gibt.)
Bis zum Ende des Buches bin ich nur hunderprozentig per Sturheit vorgedrungen.

I was surprised how much I liked this book. This is really moving and full of loving detail. I loved the discourse of literature, existentialism and humanities involved in the story of the friendship between Timm and Ohnesorg. Portraying Ohnesorg in a more personal, artistic and human way than the sole political icon that everyone knows was really interesting and felt really close. Additionally Timm's reconstruction of his younger self and his evolvement and reengagament to his emotions being his own past stranger was really touching.

Uwe Timm racconta quì la sua amicizia con Benno Ohnesorg, ucciso dal poliziotto Kurras il 2 giugno 1967 durante una manifestazione studentesca a Berlino. Un viaggio all'interno di se stesso, soprattutto, lo straniero del titolo, riferimento più che esplicito al libro di Camus. Il ricordo dell'amico e l'assurdità di un assassinio completano un testo dalla scrittura raffinata e affascinante.
E' di qualche tempo fa la notizia che Kurras era al soldo della Stasi. Die Zeit commenta che questa informazione potrebbe cambiare la storia del '68 tedesco. Sono completamente in disaccordo. Primo perché il '68 è stato un movimento mondiale e, secondo, perché il comportamento della polizia e della magistratura furono di copertura completa dell'assassino, che sparò a bruciapelo sullo studente inerme. Se il giudice che lo ha assolto era stato inquadrato nella magistratura durante il nazismo e aveva partecipato alle condanne dei politici durante il nazismo, e se la simpatia o il silenzio di quella generazione nei confronti del nazismo furono alla base della contestazione ai genitori dei giovani tedeschi di quegli anni, certo sono colpe non imputabili alla Stasi o alla DDR, deprecabili strutture che fossero.

Sehr interessant die Freundschaft zwischen Uwe Timm und Benno Ohnesorge. Allerdings sind die Beschreibungen der Bücher, die beide gelesen haben und die Texte einem fremd, weil man sie ja nicht kennt.
