Jack stepped forward and they embraced tightly. He felt D turn his face into his neck, breathing deaply, scenting him.
He heard D breathing. "I remember why I bothered callin."
He smiled. "Why's that?"
"Wanted ta tell you I love you."

Shorty # 3 to "Zero at the Bone" - four months and thirty-six hours later - 4 Stars
Only nine pages. A short weekend, anger over the circumstances, a goodbye for now, loneliness, a street fight, a long-awaited phone signal, a declaration of love, and of course sweet, sweet D (now Anson) and lovely Jack.
Sigh - I just love them forever!
I LIKE - Everything about these boys....

“I mean it from the bottom a my heart.”
Jack lost it. He rolled to the side, braying hysterically, holding the phone away from his mouth so he didn’t deafen D.
“Jack? Jack!”
He pulled himself together, gasping for breath.
“Jack, Frank’s lookin' at me funny. I gotta go.”
“Okay...sorry...just...man, oh man...”

I didn't understand the point of this story. Why write about Jack after D left? He was crazy doing that.

I AM TOTALLY IN LOVE WITH JACK & D!!!!!!!!!!!
They have taken over my heart.
It's great that i am able to continue seeing their relationship growing and how they try handle all those everyday problems like missing each other and dealing with insecurities and all those life issues.
This short story , mostly about Jack being on his own, whilst D is on yet another "secret" mission.
Loved how a day in Jack's life was written....I sensed his loneliness, felt his sense of "what can I do next"...how many of us can say that we have never felt what he does?
The rescue scene was absolutely fabulous.
The more I read, the more I am loving this series.

As grateful as I am to Jane Seville for giving me further material to decompress with, it kind of failed.
These shorts seem to mostly be a little depressing, actually. Yeah, Jack and D are hanging in there and trying to make the relationship work, but it seriously crumbles. And we don’t really get resolution for these issues either. In one of the stories it gets to the point of Jack just because the situation with D’s absences frustrates him. And then he does not tell him about the incident. It’s… tough. For me.
So those three very brief freebie stories were not exactly joyful.

This is a short that takes place a little while after the end of Zero At The Bone. While I can see where the author is going with this, I felt that it took D and Jack backwards, not forward.
Like others, I hope that the author writes a full-length book to answer the questions that I feel still need to be answered in regards to the couple and their circumstances.

There's a little humour but overall this story doesn't give an image of a healthy relationship. They both like their space, but it's clearly not working. And they have enough money between them to look at alternative options. Jack is taking stupid risks and lying about it, that's not ok.

This particular ficlet fell short of my expectations. There was barely any nice moments of D and Jack, and the consistent trope of them getting frustrated of being apart from each other for long periods is getting old.
The story this time around was Jack-centric, but it didn't really do much to his character development or let us see any special side of Jack.
I also felt that the ending of this story was left a bit hanging, and I was surprised that it ended like that. The weakest of the three shorts so far.

I love this series and this was a good story as they all are, but I think she's leading up to something not so good. This felt like a chapter out of the next novel rather than a whole story. I didn't like that. I want her to write another novel soon! I love these characters and she's such a good writer!

I just love Jack and D forever. They have seriously taken over my heart and my life; I just cannot get enough.
I love seeing their relationship grow; I love seeing how they try to handle “normal life”, like missing each other, not being able to see each other every day; dealing with insecurities and all.
This short story is mostly about Jack being on his own while D is away again on one of his jobs. Sadly this story is only nine pages long (do you hear me cry?) It includes anger, a goodbye, loneliness, a fight, a phone call, a really heart warming and fun declaration of love and of course sweet and lovely D and Jack and just them being in love with each other; missing each other – longing for each other.
The street fight scene was fabulous. It didn’t only make Jack realize how he’s changed since he’s met D (maybe in a good and in a bad way) but it also showed us how strong he became, physically and mentally. But it also showed us how much he really misses D while he’s gone. He was looking for a way to get rid of his anger about D leaving and right at this moment he thought that this street fight might be the best way to do so. He didn’t think about the consequences though. It was stupid in a way but also showed us that he’s not D’s little “wifey”. He can take care of himself too, he doesn’t need nobody to look out for him (though it’s nice to know that there’s someone who’s always looking out for you; taking care of you).
Actually I wish Jack would have told D what happened that night when he called; I really wanted to see his reaction but on the other hand, as Jack said “his head would probably have exploded” or something. He would have been crazy mad though.
I loved how Jane wrote about Jack’s day, about his feelings; his thoughts. I’m pretty sure that we all have felt this way at some point in our lives. It was so real and honest and I just absolutely adored every single part of it.
What I found quite amusing was when the police officer came up to Jack and asked him if he had a wife and kids and Jack was like “I have a partner” and the police officer is like … “Oh”. The police officer didn’t act like a jerk though only because Jack was gay but he for sure was surprised because maybe he didn’t expect some gay guy be as tough as Jack was and I loved that Jack proved him wrong. You know only because a guy is gay doesn't mean that he has to be all weak and whiney and such and that is actually what I love about D so much.
Although D’s declaration of love made my heart melt it also made me laugh so hard. I’ve mentioned it before but I just love Jane Sevilles humour and especially her writing of course.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see these characters again since I LOVED the main book. However I'm a little disappointed. I'd be a little less disappointed if I knew that I can jump into the next full size book in the near future, but that is not the case. Therefore, these books feel misplaced and are somewhat ruining the HEA I imagined for Jack and D - and as they are juggling their careers and separation-frustrations, they are making choices that are putting their lives/safety, relationship, and happiness (which they fought so hard to get) in danger. Why????

Yay again, more D and Jack. This one was another quickie, and, while it wasn't a fun one, I felt it had more emotion than the previous one, so I upped it a star. The guys are struggling with D's job causing them to be apart for long stretches. I really hope they can figure things out. This one tore at my heart a little.

More tension grows between D and Jake. Life is not what they expected, as D's job obliges him to be away more than what he really wants... there is anger but there is also love... Things are never going to be easy between these two characters, but they both try to make them work. I really, really need the sequel... and a whole book instead of a short story.
