After his success with "It's all right now" Chadwick published this shorter novel which to be honest is not as authentic and convincing as his first one. But though the plot (almost a crime story with dead gangsters) is somewhat exaggerated Chadwick again is best when inventing his characters: The ugly main protagonist, her mother and her friend are in line with the "inconspicuous" character of "It's all right now".

Lakonischer Ton, etwas triste Story, deren Wert mehr in der Einsicht in die Psychologie eines hässlichen Menschen gibt, dabei zwar unglaubwürdig ist, aber Mitleid und Verständnis befördert.

I bought this book because it was recommended by a columnist I like in the FT - Susie Hoyt. It is beautifully written, and very English. A little like Anita Brookner, sort of soft and evocative. But I prefer Brookner.

This is one of those off centre books that I love. A interior journey for two unusual main characters that is very revealing for the reader as well. Highly recommend.
