Summary: Haunted by nightmares, tormented by guilt, Jezebel arrives at Redemption Ranch in an attempt to escape her past…except now she's stuck in the middle of nowhere with no redemption in sight. When her mother pushes her into riding lessons with local veterinarian Matthias Saunders, Jezebel balks. Sure, the doctor is gorgeous, but he's completely obnoxious, and knows how to push every single one of her buttons. Only her deep connection with The Reverend, a gentle stallion who guards her darkest secrets, has her agreeing to spend any more time with Dr. Saunders. Caring for the stallion is the first bright spot in her life in months, and if being around the horse means she has to face-off with the most frustrating person she’s ever met, then so be it. Surely a city girl like her can handle one country vet. Even one with disturbing blue eyes.
Multi-published, award winning author, AJ Nuest resides in a small farming community in NW Indiana. A wife, mother and freelance editor, she shares her home with a variety of spoiled-rotten pets. She and the cat are currently vying for dictatorship.
This passionate and compelling story really drew me in with its emotional intensity, in-depth characterisation, moving romance, vivid imagery and excellent dialogue.
Matty is the perfect hero. With patience, tenderness and unconditional love, he helps Jezzy to heal.
No matter how she tested his boundaries, no matter what buttons she tried to push, Matty never once wavered. So instead he became her soft place to fall, a treasure to be cherished.
Jezzy is a tormented soul consumed with grief and guilt. Ms Nuest does an excellent job of making you really live Jezzy’s emotions and share her journey to rediscover herself and accept that she is worthy of Matty’s love.
”My beautiful, vulnerable, heartbroken Jezebel.”
I love the part The Reverend plays in Jezzy’s healing process and how Ms Nuest captures their deep connection perfectly.

It knew what she needed, without her having to say a single word. It offered no judgement, no prejudice. The horse didn’t care if her heart was full of shame or anger, if she was filled with guilt or remorse.
The story is beautifully written and what I liked most was the banter between Jezzy and Matty which is so natural and spontaneous.
”You need to go.” He backed up. ”I know. I know.” He grabbed his shirt from the floor and slid his arms through the sleeves. He came back for another kiss. “Matty!” “I know!” “Go!” “I’m going now!” He kissed her one last time before heading for the door. He paused in the doorway, shrugging into his coat. “I miss you already.”
The one thing that really irritated me when reading this book was Ms Nuest’s constant reference to Matty’s dimples. I lost count of how many times they were mentioned!
When we first meet the heroine Jezebel she is in a very dark place in her life, not to mention in a foul mood! Jezzy is staying with her mother for a short time in order to rest after the death of her fiance. She is struggling with nightmares and feelings of guilt regarding her relationship with her fiance and the situation right before his death, we discover that he was abusive as well as possibly having an affair. Jezzy is introduced to the hero Matty, the local vet, when he comes to check on her mother's horses. Her mother persuades her to let Matty give her some horse riding lessons, in the hope it will make her feel better. Matty teaches her to ride and care for The Reverend, whom Jezzy finds it easy to talk to and confess her inner turmoil, which eases her feelings of guilt. Matty is drawn to Jezzy and wants to help her heal, be that via The Reverend or through his tenderness. When a love-affair between them begins, Jezzy's nightmares return with a vengeance and she immediately begins to push Matty away.
This was one intense and emotional book, I spent the majority of the time reading it on the verge of tears, and one particular moment in floods of them (if you have read it you will know which bit I'm talking about!). The grief and guilt that Jezzy is suffering from is written brilliantly with both depth and sensitivity, it really made me feel connected with the characters feelings. What I loved most about this book was the bond built between Jezzy and The Reverend and how AJ Nuest explored the healing power of animals. The Reverend was the only one Jezzy felt she could open up to, which helped her heal enough to trust again and give Matty a chance. Speaking of Matty, he was an amazing male character! He was so caring and strong, who encouraged Jezzy to heal but never pushed her, I only wish that the narrative could have included some of his point of view as well.
AJ Nuest deals with some tough issues in this book (abuse, grief, depression etc) and they are all handled perfectly. A lighthearted read this is not, but amazing nonetheless.
In AJ Nuest’s debut novel for The Wild Rose Press, she tells the story or Jezebel a who comes home to Wisconsin to try and heal from the scars left behind in Chicago, scars caused by the accidental death of her fiancé. She has a hard enough time trying to fit into her mother’s life, let alone acclimate herself to the horse ranch her mother’s purchased since her last visit home, Redemption Ranch. She’s also acquired a love for a very noisy, somewhat ornery, heart-stoppingly handsome horse by the name of The Reverend, who at first, drives Jezzy up the wall with his penchant for noisy morning calisthenics. Add to that, the arrival of sexy veterinarian Matthias (Matty) Saunders who drives Jezzy crazy with his boyish charm, and penchant for answering her questions with a question, and Jezzy wonders why she ever came home to begin with.
On the other hand, Matthias sure is irresistible and he can’t seem to stop thinking of Jezzy either.
However, Jezzy just can’t seem to let go of the horrific accident, nor her guilt over the thought that her wish to be rid of her fiancé might have caused it. Can Matty find a way to convince her she’s wrong, and that indeed she can survive to find love again, with him? You’ll have to read to find out.
Part romance, part Women’s fiction, AJ Nuest’s fabulous, heart wrenching story, Jezebel’s Wish should please fans of both. I do warn you, though, keep the tissue’s handy. You’ll need them!
Jezebel attempts to escape her tortured past and the guilt eating at her soul. Her mother's ranch only amplifies her misery. Then the veterinarian and The Reverend enter her life and the sparks fly. With Mattias and The Reverend's love, her life slowly changes, even though she is afraid to let love in. Matthias gains a hold on her heart with his honesty and goodness and The Reverend teaches her to respect the devotion between a man and his horse. When disaster again strikes, Jezebel bolts, determined to lay to rest the ghost of a lost love, leaving behind a heartbroken Matthias.
Matthias' love is forever, but can he overcome the demons haunting Jezebel?
Jezebel's Wish is a delightful love story. Ms. Nuest delivers a passionate and compelling story of broken promises, heartrending pain and, ultimately, the dream of a bright future. Keep a Kleenex handy, this is a tearjerker - happy and sad. I recommend Jezebel's Wish to anyone who loves a great romance and to those who understand the bond existing between humans and their pets!
Jezebel has recently moved back to Wyoming to be with her mom and sister. After the loss of her fiance, Jezzy doesn't know what to do or where to go. Her mother has a ranch where she has a few horses, chickens, etc. She tries to get Jezzy to help, but all she wants to do is forget. Forget the nightmares, forgive herself for the past. The nightmares keep coming and she tries to push them aside.
One morning a man walks up and asks if she is lost. Jezzy doesn't know the man and is very sarcastic to him. We come to find out the man is Matthias Saunders, the local veterinarian. When her mother suggests riding lessons, Jezzy freaks out. She doesn't want anything to do with the man. Matty makes a deal with her: One lesson, and she can walk away. She agrees after thinking about it for a while.
When Jezzy meets the stallion her mother has named Redemption, she falls in love. She starts sharing her secrets with him. He is her savior about trying to live with all the guilt over her ex-fiance and what happened.
Matty knows how to push Jezzy's buttons. What she doesn't know, he is doing it for a reason. He knows she is hurting and keeping secrets and all he wants to do is find out what is going on and love her. They start to become close, but as they do, the nightmares become even worse. She needs redemption and needs it now. Can Matty help her? Can she help herself?
I enjoyed this read. It has everything: Romance, suspense, thrills and some sadness. I admit I cried a few times as the heartfelt story was wonderful. I think we can all relate to how both characters felt. The writer did a wonderful job with the setting and characters. You could picture everything that was going on with such clarity you would have thought you were there.
I will be looking for more books from this author.

I've followed blogs, reviews and spoken with AJ about this book since May and knew what to expect...I thought. Nothing can truly prepare you for this book. Just pick up Jezebel's Wish and READ IT for yourself. After all- that's really the only way you'll know.
I was in awe of the depth AJ Nuest took these characters all the way to the end. What a bitch she was to Matty! But you know what? I got her. I felt what she felt, where she was coming from and I didn't hate her. Did I cry? Yes. I cried. But oddly- I cried more for Matty than Jezebel. She wrote his pain so deeply, so authentically that I felt his pain! And I felt his joy. What made me happy most was how I could sense his humor at seeing (avoided spoiler). I loved that last piece of 'him' without her spelling it out for me.
Don't shoot me, AJ! I honestly felt that this was Matty's story more than Jezzy's. Why? Because he didn't have a personal conflict, I think. So this became the path to his happiness after caring selflessly for others all his life-- giving his all to a broken soul with no thought to himself. He knew she might leave-- I know he did (even if that was just in the back of the author's mind)-- he knew and yet he persevered. It was almost as though he needed to prove to himself that he could save her, one last battle before he could settle down and let happiness claim him. Yes, it was about Jezzy, her fears, pain, self-loathing-- but it was really Matty's success story in the end for me.
And I loved Bernice! LOVED HER. She reminded me of my mother with just one thing she does repeatedly.
Well, done my dear friend, AJ! You rocked this one and I look forward to your next book- whatever it may be. Can I be you when I grow up?
I have to admit that at first Jezzy was rough around the edges. I found she rode a line for me, where I wasn’t fond of some of the things she did and at times I struggled to like her. And I have to say I hated not knowing quite what had happened to her. That drove me nuts, frankly. Lol
But the character voice was incredible. I’m usually not too fond of too many details. I usually skim over them. But every tiny detail came from Jezzy’s very unique point of view, I felt as if I was seeing the world through her eyes. So that I devoured every one of those details. That doesn’t happen often.
And the more I read, the more Jezzy grew on me, and I began to understand why she was the way she was. And then I began to care about her and feel for her and root for her. I cried with her, laughed with her, screamed with her. In other words, Jezzy was very REAL. She wasn’t a cardboard cut-out.
And the hero, Matty. Sigh. I think everybody needs a Matty.
I usually don’t like cowboy stories, but this one made me a fan.
I cried in the end, and that’s hard to do. Any book that can make me cry gets two thumbs WAY up. Wonderful very real characters, loaded with emotion and kept me reading from start to finish. Loved it.
I read a lot of plot driven books. Books in both the hero and heroine's POV. Jezebel's Wish is a character-driven romance in the heroine's POV. I was half-way through the book before I realized the author never wrote a single word in Matty's POV. But I got to know Matty through Jezzy's eyes. And I absolutely fell in love with him.
As for Jezzy, Ms. Nuest does more than just reveal the story through her POV, she makes you see through Jezzy's eyes and feel what Jezzy feels. And the author's descriptions of one of Jezzy's dreams is so graphic, I felt Jezzy's fear. Her heartache. And I understood her grief and her guilt. And at the same time, I wanted to smack Jezzy upside the head and make her see her former fiance' for the ass-wipe he was!
There was one scene in the book that made me cry. And Jezzy's reaction to the tragedy made me cry again. Then there was another little shocker at the end, something I didn't see coming. And neither did Jezzy. I felt her shock. Her outrage. And I cheered her on when she pulled on those cowboy boots and went after what she wanted!
This was my first book by Aj Nuest, but I don't think it will be my last. Great Job AJ!
Jezzy and Matty's romance was a thing of beauty. From their first meeting when Jezzy decided she couldn't stand the interfering vet, and the constant power struggle from then on, you were aware that Matty always knew his direction - straight to her heart. He wanted her, and she had to learn that she was worth being wanted. It meant overcoming horrible dreams that reminded her nightly that she wasn't worthy. The Reverend, her horse, became her friend and confidant and helped her to face her fears. Ms. Nuest wrote a lovely story, and I, for one, will be watching for any new work she releases.
Heated passion and fervent intensity send sparks flying off the pages
This compelling contemporary romance is a deeply beguiling tale of true love, heartrending truism and sincerity that speaks to the soul. Full of emotive, truth-drawing and often rather raw candidness I was touched and moved by Jezebel’s journey. Unlike the cliché, stereotypical ‘chick-lit’ fluffy romance between two people this novel contained a deeper layer of poignancy and expression. The vast personal journey of growth and self-discovery that the main protagonist embarks upon is so remarkable that it really reached out to me on an intimate and resounding level. Never before has an author addressed such controversial, challenging issues and managed to instil such a strong sense of ‘self’ within a story that I could almost extract from the words a intimate response.
With its affecting quality and in-depth characterization, tender romance and vivid imagery this wonderful tale is truly sublime! The connection between patient, tender Matty and vulnerable Jezzy is so beautifully mesmerizing that you cannot help but become entangled within the storyline and the delicately interwoven narrative. Dreamlike fluid prose flows through you as an intoxicatingly heady aura… I was reduced to tears with my soul shaken by this empathetic love story, about healing and enrichment. “My beautiful, vulnerable, heartbroken Jezebel…”
“No matter how she tested his boundaries, no matter what buttons she tried to push, Matty never once wavered. So instead he became her soft place to fall, a treasure to be cherished.”
As a tormented soul consumed with grief and guilt, Jezebel is a true heroine whom I greatly admired and was able to empathize with so easily. Alongside the broken promises, excruciating pain and dreams for a brighter future is a clear message of hope and of how spontaneous unexpected events can alter and define our lives. The strong bond between humans and equally between our animals and us is irrevocably as binding as our souls inside of us, hence I could also warm to the stunning Stallion ‘The Reverend’ (whose now nestled in a corner of my heart forever!). I would highly recommend this exquisitely wrought, haunting story to readers of romance and those seeking a sensationally insightful exploration in life.
A J Nuest focuses on some tough issues, for instance abuse and depression and so I would regard this as you encounter some perceptive, sensitive parts. *I would like to thank the author for providing me with an e-copy of her enchanting and thoroughly enjoyable novel to read & review.
This book started with a bang! and I was immediately submerged to Jezebel's emotional struggle. Tormented by guilt and unbearable pain, Jezzy returned to her mother and sister, hoping that somehow she'll find peace at the Redemption Ranch, leaving her usual life in the city... for a while. But she never imagined her life with a new man. And as Jezzy found friendship with the gentle dark-mane stallion "The Reverend", she soon found love in the arms of Dr. Matthias Saunders. It's a good combination when the author created a broken heroine with a strong and kind hero. Every woman needs a hero like Matty! He's kind and smart, and ever-so-patient that it will make you love him even more as you progress in your reading. Surely, love comes in mysterious ways--in times when you least expect it. Most especially during the times when you don't think you deserve it.
There were a few parts in the story that I found to be a little slow but I was really surprised by the turn of events during the last part. I love how the author created the beautiful ending that it made me smile (a big smile actually =) and sleep happily after the emotional and heart-wrenching feeling I had throughout the entire book. I think about it every time, and I still smile whenever I remember it. I think that is the best part--after all the pain and the hardships, there's still a happily ever after for Matty and Jezzy. It was inspiringly beautiful.
"Isolation isn't about where you are. It's about the choices you make."
I'd say that more than anything, this is about forgiveness and love. The truth is that everyone, even you, despite your dark and painful past, deserves forgiveness, redemption, and most of all... love.
Her fiancé died in a fiery accident after a fight with her. The absolutely worst part is that she’s glad he’s dead…
This author creates a main female character that is one of the walking wounded. Jennifer was in a relationship with a man who was verbally abusive and she’s lost her self-confidence and belief in herself. He’d almost brainwashed her to the point of believing she’s unworthy. I don’t know about you, but I’ve met men like that before. The author must have known some, too, because the story line has a ring of truth.
Jennifer runs home to her mother, looking for a safe place. This is where main character number two shows up. He’s the local vet. And he decides to give her riding lessons, per her mother’s request, and see if he can calm her down and bring her soul some peace. I like the way the author works horses into the story and uses the power of a horse’s understanding to help Jennifer find her way back to the path of life. If you’ve ever mucked out a stable or combed and curried a horse, you’ll feel right at home in these book pages.
Both characters are honest, good people who haven’t found the right person in their life. Mattie, the vet, goes with the flow and tries to have patience with Jennifer. Jennifer tries to lay her ghosts of past life to rest. And her family joins in on the matchmaking.
The author successfully attracts your attention and pulls you into the tale. The story has a good pace, has some unexpected moments, and makes you care enough to root for the relationship to be successful.
I really enjoyed reading this story. Why not get a copy and try it for yourself?
A very heart-wrenching story about a woman who is emotionally recovering from the death of her fiancée. To try and sort out her feelings and give herself some space, Jezebel (or Jezzy) stays with her mother and sister on their ranch in the country - quite a break and change of scenery from her city life in Chicago. Because of the dark secrets she holds about the accident that killed her fiancée, she puts up a wall of negativity and anger. However, the local vet Matthias (or Matty) is used to caring and healing those who hurt but can't talk about their pain. Enlisting the gentle nature of a stallion named The Reverend, Matty helps Jezzy recover from her ordeal and their relationship blossoms.
Matty is a strong and loving hero any woman would dream of having in her life, with a gentle nature who gives as good as he gets and deals with the heroine's caustic nature with good humor...just what she needs to bring those walls down.
Jezzy is a very much like a wounded animal that lashes out at anyone trying to help, but she's doing it to protect those she loves and it's less about protecting herself. The guilt she has weighing her spirit down is understandable and her transition toward healing is a joyful experience.

4.5 stars An emotional, dramatic read! Jezebel’s Wish is a compelling novel by AJ Nuest. It runs the gamut of being intense to lighthearted with an emphasis on intense. Jezebel is a tortured protagonist and her bristly personality pushes the reader’s tolerance at times. After a traumatic incident in Chicago, she goes home to her mother and sister to heal. Along comes Mattias Saunders with deep dimples and sea blue eyes and with patience greater than any woman has ever experienced, and the reader’s heart goes thump. This guy extends hero status beyond being a Prince into Sainthood! He is every damaged woman’s dream, if only every woman with issues could find a guy like Matty. Ms. Nuest writes sexy and sensuous prose, dramatic and gritty characters, and grabs the reader by the throat and forces them to follow a story that, at times, feels more than this reader could handle though I couldn't put it down! There is an interesting plot twist toward the end, and a fabulous ending, the kind us romance enthusiasts love. This book reads more like mainstream fiction, but the numerous love scenes rein it back into the romance genre. I recommend this book to those who love a deeply dramatic story, one that twists your gut at times, but delivers on the HEA. Well done Ms. Nuest!
I love the raw and rugged edge that’s brought to the table with Jezzy. The emotional struggle in dealing with her fiancés death sends her out of busy life in Chicago and with her mother and sister on their ranch in the country. Everyone grieves differently and this is true with Jezzy. Nuest shows all the mistakes, trials, and tribulations one goes through when grieving.
Tissues are necessary as Nuest captures every emotion and you’re sure to feel every one of them. Forget the cardboard cut-out character; Jezzy is a real girl with real issues. We all know real girls fall in love too, which is why Matty is not only adorable but delectable. He’s all about fighting for Jezzy even when her stubborn ways interfere. They’re relationship is honest and shows truly what it takes to make a relationship work. Matty knows she’s worth the wait.
Nuest shows you not only the relationships among humans and how powerful they can be, but that of animal and humans intense connection. Jezzy’s horse, Reverend, gives her the strength to face all her fears. Sometimes animals know better than humans.
I loved this story. The tears I shed were with Jezzy and watching her overcome all that was needed to fall in love. I cannot wait for another release from Nuest. It will be well worth the wait.
Well, I've finished reading Jezebel's Wish, but I must confess for the first few chapters I had serious doubts I'd get through it--that's how much I disliked Jezzy at first. I didn't get her or her rudeness, and not knowing why she was being such a bitch made me want to skip pages and be done with the book as fast as I could.
Man, am I glad I didn't give up on her, or on you, or I'd have missed out on a beautiful love story! The male character, Matty, is wonderfully portrayed, and his genuine goodness of heart and true altruism reminded me again why I fell in love with my husband in the first place. Thank you for that.
As a fan of short stories and novellas, as you well know, I'm not one for too many descriptions in a book, but I'm sure glad you took me into the world of cowboys and horses in such detail. I now have a complete new appreciation for the hard work that goes into everyday life on a ranch, though being a city girl I wouldn't want to be part of it. Ever! Lol
I enjoyed Jezebel's Wish, and I can't wait to read "She's got Dibs".
Yes, you're going to need the tissue box, but JEZEBEL'S WISH is well worth the tears!
Jezebel is a woman who is at her emotional limit. Having lived through a nightmare relationship with her former fiance, she returns home broken -- and in her opinion -- incapable of being repaired. Then in walks Matty. I think he is the perfect Beta male. (So ladies if you're tired of all the bossy Alpha males in romance, this is your story) He knows exactly how to coax Jezzy from her self imposed hell, though her inner demons keep pulling her back in. . . *no spoilers here*
This is the most emotionally touching story I've read in a long time. Any woman who has ever "came back" from a horrible relationship will feel Jezzy's pain and just ache for this woman to have her happy ending. The sex scenes are sensual, yet tastefully written and the banter between Jezzy and Matty is wonderful -- not to mention Ms. Nuest explores the special friendship a person can feel with a beloved pet (albeit a horse instead of a dog).
Ms. Nuest has a winner on her hands and I'm placing her on my auto-buy list!
Its not the easiest thing to bring the reader to tears and is the mark of a great storyteller IMO. This author did this more than once with some truly poignant moments.
Jezzy's journey was a hard, painful one but so rewarding when she managed to break through the abuse of her past and except at last she was worthy of love. Matty is such a good man, completely deserving of the title "hero", and just goes to prove, its not just the dark, brooding alpha males that are sexy.
I finished this book with a big sigh of contentment and a desire to write emotional journeys just as well as AJ Nuest one day.
Thank you for a wonderful story AJ - can't wait to read more from you.
Jezebel has returned to her family after the death of her fiancée. She thought going home would make her feel better but she's wrong. She couldn't escape the past because of a secret that has been haunting her since the day her ex died. Everything seems so wrong in her life until her mom pushes her into riding lessons with the vet Matthias Saunders. Slowly, she finds happiness with the stallion and the vet. However things are not that easy to forget. Her past is still haunting her.
The plot of the story is great, the characters are likeable especially Matty, the local vet who falls in love with Jezzy. The conflict of the story was believable, the story had me crying. I can feel Jezzy's pain. This is my first book by AJ Nuest and I will definitely look out for her other books.
This story literally made me cry, made me laugh, made me fall in love with Matty and Jezzy. When the ending came, it was delivered perfectly...a perfect ending to a perfect story...but, of course, by then I didn't want it to end.
Be forewarned - you'll need your tissues! But if you love romance...if you appreciate a man who is not only strong and sexy (puts hand over heart!!), but steadfast...if you can identify with a woman who has been through the worst kind of tragedy yet finds the strength to reach for the promise, then Jezebel's Wish by A.J. Nuest is the book for you.
Seriously, this book is going with the rest of my favorites, and I encourage you not to miss it!
Amazing! And that I personally know the author just makes it that much better. Jezebels' Wish is a fabulous story told entirely in the heroine's point of view. The hero is every woman's fantasy. Matty is patient understanding and willing to help Jezzy through what has to be the most difficult time of her life. The only problem is Jezzy must first forgive herself and work through her own feelings before she can truly love him in return.
It's not easy to match strong characters and a strong conflict without one overwhelming the other. Ms Nuest finds the perfect line with Jezzy and Matty, balancing their heartbreaking conflict without burying their likability under over-the-top drama. I laughed and I cried as the author expertly shadowed Jezzy's growing connection to The Reverend with Matty's subtle easing of her heart. Nicely done.
I love how Ms. Nuest weaves flawed characters into her stories. Jezzy was bitter and broken at the beginning and goes through an amazing metamorphosis as the story unfolds. In fact, I liked all the characters, including The Reverend. This story is emotional, filled with sexual tension, and very satisfying to read.
This is what I'll call 'A Life Book'. It represents all aspects that many of us will, at some point, go through. Love, heartbreak and loss, anger, wondering where we went wrong or what we did wrong....therefore it's A Life Book. The only spoiler I shall give you is just one word: Tissues. Highly recommend!
