I enjoyed this one. The characters are very likable—Thompson has a great gift for creating personalities you root for, laugh with, and cheer on. His strongest talent, in my view, is his humor. The same witty, sharp comedic voice that made his other books (like Simon Pure, Terry and the Pirates, and The Grounding of Group Six) such fun reads is fully on display here.

That said, the main plot element—the kidnapping of Molly—felt a little abrupt for my taste. I would have preferred more buildup or at least hints sprinkled in earlier, so the moment landed with more weight instead of surprise. It doesn’t derail the story, but it’s the one thing that slightly pulled me out of the flow.

Honestly, I’m puzzled that Julian F. Thompson hasn’t received more attention. Not all of his books are perfect, but when he hits the mark (and The Trials of Molly Sheldon definitely does), he delivers something edgy, funny, and thoroughly enjoyable in the YA space.
