The book you've been waiting for, from well-known trainer and international workshop-presenter Terry Ryan! We are pleased to announce that Terry Ryan's classic Coaching People to Train Their Dogs is available again. Terry Ryan has been a mentor - maybe guru is a better word - for a whole generation of modern dog trainers who have benefited from her books, lectures, and seminars on dog training and class instruction.
This 400 page trainer's manual includes just about anything today's modern professional dog trainer needs to know - training methods, learning theory, running a training business, and class organization. Of particular note is Chapter 6, "People Skills," where Terry focuses on how to interact with human students, the one part of the training equation that is sometimes overlooked. This edition has a new chapter on Animal Husbandry and some revised lessons plans.
Great book that covers a lot of information. It uses a lot of references to science, including the sources, which I really like. While the book is a little bit old, it does use a lot of modern dog training, focusing on rewards rather than aversive tools, which makes most information still useful in the present. The only ‘downside’ of this book, is that the author seems to have real connections with the inventor of the gentle leader which often appears and seems like an add. I would recommend reading this book when you are a trainer, but I would not copy ideas without checking current science first. It did give me a couple of new insights.
An excellent reference book for aspiring instructors of dog obedience classes as well as for current instructors and also a useful and interesting read for people who with their dogs attend dog obedience classes.
This book has some good information in it about dog training. It is especially helpful for problem solving ways to help people manage their dogs when they do not want to train them.
