I did not read the first book in this series, so I was a little afraid I would be lost. I needn’t have worried, the story stands alone. James is the son of a tough, impossible to please father. Father is never satisfied, and works his sons hard. He is worse than ever, since James’ older brother Waylon not only came out as gay, but is in a relationship with two men. Dad can’t handle that news and has cut off Waylon from the family, and now works the two sons remaining at home, James and Brent, harder than ever in order to prove they are “men”. He runs his family with an iron fist and when he tells James he will be going to sell some horses with Jet Cartwright, James is suspicious but doesn’t say no. He’s pretty sure his father has a hidden agenda.
Jet Cartwright is a horse trader (didn’t seem to be a drifter so much as a traveler. He didn’t settle down, but he wasn’t aimless, either). He is also the fuel for James’ most secret fantasies. He has been longing for the man for years. Jet, unbeknownst to James, is gay, and has had a hankering for the young James for a while as well. They begin to make a real connection as they make the drive to the rodeo where they will trade the horses. The rodeo, where James does not want to participate ever again after getting gored and hurt last time; but his father believes the rodeo shows you are a man. Yes, father dearest has paid Jet to enter James in the rodeo.
James is so innocent, so torn between being true to himself and trying to please a father who will never be pleased. Jet is a frustrating character, at times I just wanted to smack him. He shows moments of almost cruelty to James, “Why so angry? Did I make any promises?” I wanted James to run from the man. Add in the Tyler situation and oh, poor James.
This is the first time I’ve read anything by this author and I liked the writing. She made me connect to the characters, even when I didn’t like them (Jet sometimes!) and her “bad guy” father was a realistically portrayed bad guy. This was a pleasant surprise for me, and I will be reading Ms. Wilder’s work again.

James is a young man with a secret, a secret he shouldn’t have to keep, but the fear of being shunned by his family has him keeping his lips tightly sealed. After seeing his father disown his brother for being gay, James doesn’t want to take the chance that his father will cast him aside for being in love with another man. This is a character who is torn between coming out of the closet or staying trapped in his own personal prison just to keep his family happy.

Jet Cartwright drifts between riding the rodeo circuit and helping rancher’s sell their purebred horses. He was hired by James’ father to teach him the ropes of trading horses, but what Jet teaches James has nothing to do with horses. He’s a man of many hats and is good at disguising his true nature. Jet has always admired James from afar but Jet knows his limits when it comes to relationships and he isn’t the settling down type. Still every protective instinct comes out in him when he's with James and has him thinking forever isn’t so bad.

I really liked the character of Jet; he doesn’t broadcast his sexual preference but he also doesn’t hide who he is. At times I found him to be frustrating, he is afraid of putting down roots and committing to one person for the rest of his life. But love outweighs any uncertainties he may have had; he just has to prove to his young and naïve cowboy that he’s in for the long haul.

This was a sweet loving story filled with plenty of misunderstandings between the two main characters. This author paired together a man still trying to figure out who he is with a man experience in life and in sex, so it’s a given these two men will butt heads often. The attraction is evident from the first touch they share. This is a couple that will keep me wondering what adventures they will share next long after the story ended. That's the true proof of a good book.

Reviewed by Jamie: Another book pretty much defined by it's cover. Perhaps the clues were there; words like 'Classic' and 'Manlove Collection' didn't set my hopes that high. 'Cheese' would have been more apt.

That's not to say this wasn't a bad story. It had it's moments, and with a bit of cliche-reining could have been a lot snappier. This was my first time reading anything by Winona Wilder, and I must confess I'm not a cowboy theme fan. So let's look on the bright side a bit...

Wilder builds a pretty scene, typically romantic, of shy a young farm hand James who faces frustration as a closeted gay man. Enter dark and dangerous, sexy rodeo cowboy, Jet; he's a drifter, a wild card. And the two are sent off on a road trip where the sparks start to fly.

The story was a little slow to start, but definitely heated up once the two cowboys were in the truck and flirting. I found myself liking Jet's rugged charm, and James' naivety.

It was a well written story, with good sexual tension throughout, but just one too many times the author over-did the cliches, which did have me rolling my eyes slightly. Take those bits away, and it was a good story.

Recommend to readers who love cowboy themes, classic romance stories and unchallenging storylines.

Having read (and for the most part hated) Ms. Wilder's first book in the series, "Choosing Love", I was prepared for the worst when I started "Cowboy Drifter". Boy, was I in for a pleasant surprise.

James is a rancher's son, being driven hard by his dad to pay for the sins of his brother (Waylon from "Choosing Love"). Jet is the roving cowboy who he has admired and secretly lusted after for years. When James' father arranges for him to go on a horse selling trip (with another agenda) with Jet, James finds out his secret crush has feeling for him also.

This is everything the first story in the series was not - tender, well thought out, with characters that have emotional depth and who explore those feeling in a realistic, thoughtful way. The only quibble I have is how quickly the word "love" gets thrown around.

Have a good time with this book - hot cowboys, romance, and the promise of some light spanking . Good stuff all around.

A nice addition to the series. I only wish it was longer and have a little more detailed plot.
