Pretty much all-out war ensues between the alliance of 'good' and their antagonists, and there are some real casualties. A huge turning point in the series as it comes full circle as Ganta gets to face his original nemesis and face them possible unmasked? Very poor art, improving characterisation (better late than never) and at last a sense of urgency sees my interest in this series take an upward swing as we head towards the final four volumes. A Two Star, 5 out of 12 read.

Deadman Wonderland 9 closes the first story arc and sets the stage for the next step in the story. There is a huge reveal at the end, devastating to Ganta, but also closure (for the moment) for quite a few of the characters. As always, the story remains tightly focused on the action as many fight for their lives or die grisly deaths.

Story: Makina is making her final move on Tamaki - and in the middle of the battle are all the ninben and deadmen prisoners. It will all come to a head - but will Makina or Tamaki stand triumphant? Or will everyone lose?

The twists at the end were a long time coming but definitely worth the wait. Quite a few loose ends were picked up but several new riddles have now emerged. And though we have an ending to this 9 volume story arc, the promise of something quite different to come is all the more intriguing. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

SPOILERS!!
Noooo! Shiro!!!!!! You can't be Aceman, AND the Wretched Egg at the same time!! Ugh, so technically Shiro is dead, but, she isn't...? I know the new Shiro is totally a murderer because they are the Red Man, (Who killed Ganta's classmates) and killed AZAMI!!!!! NOOOOO!!
I kind of found it funny how Shiro, (The Wretched Egg) was just like: "Can I sleep now? I'm tired, and that lullaby is annoying."
Lol, that kind of sounds like Shiro.
The Toto guy is kind of confusing, because he really is the director, (who's like, SUPER old), and Shiro called him Grandfather. Yet when he was kind of having a half conversation with Shiro, (she was asleep), he said (not word by word, sorry): Can we play seriously?
Okay, does he have, like, a THING for his GRANDAUGHTER?!?
Ulggh. Nevermind.
This is getting extremely exciting and fast paced, but I thought the Mother Goose nursery would work longer for Shiro. :/

Ganta finally finds out who Wretched Egg is and I'm devastated. I feel like he should have figured it out already but I still loved the reveal. It was just so sad. And then they have to go kill Azami. That was brutal. I literally screamed when I saw her head. This series has taken me on a roller-coaster ride and I'm both excited and fearful for where it's going to take me next.

I love this series. It's very dark and it has so many twists. Absolutly love the art style. So now Ganta knows... Tamaki was absolutly insane.

KO unit (Ninben) are losing to the deadmen and are deemed too weak to serve their purpose. Their purpose was to kill the Wretched Egg but if they cannot defeat the deadmen then their is no way they will be able to kill the most powerful and original deadman. It is also revealed that the Wretched Egg may be the source of the Tokyo Earthquake that happened 10 years earlier. Makina is evacuating the G Ward and Azami is with Shiro when she wakes up but Azami quickly realizes that the Shiro sitting in front of her is not the same person she use to be. Ganta finally makes his way to where the chaos is coming from and sees the wretched egg holding Azami's head and after a brief fight it is finally revealed to Ganta who the Wretched Egg/Red Man is.

This was an action/blood filled volume of terror and tears. A lot of emotions are running through this volume and it just keeps getting better and better. While I am sad to see some of the characters go I cannot wait to see how others will develop in future volumes.

I received this advanced copy from VIZ Media through Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review.

This volume highlights something that I think is a strength in the entire series: The effect of the earthquake on the people and society of Tokyo. I like how throughout the series, the author explores the trauma of individuals that was caused by the earthquake. In this volume, she takes it a step higher by finally revealing the earthquake's cause, and how those consequences shaped the lives of everyone at Deadman Wonderland. There were also some fun plot twists, but sadly I saw most of them coming. Even though it was of the same quality as the other volumes, this one did succeed in giving me higher expectations for the final volumes of the series. I'm praying that the author won't sacrifice her great ongoing ideas and themes for a standard and unsurprising resolution. Also, I've been loving Makina recently.

This volume really seemed to fly by, which makes sense as it contains notably fewer pages than the previous installment. The artwork is fantastic as usual, while the story seems to be condensing to a fine point; with characters thinned out brutally along the way, there remains a concise narrative arc which would indicate an imminent ending - though with four more volumes to go, more characters and surprises are sure to be introduced. I enjoyed this, though as with the series in general, it lacks the complexity I enjoy in other manga; Deadman usually delivers more of a surface-level entertainment, with titillation through violence, action and aesthetics, rather than gradual character development. That being said, there is plenty of subtext to sink your teeth into.

A very dark and dreary manga that takes on a whole new meaning to action. Deadman Wonderland raises the bar for dystopian manga in my opinion and I like it! Some scenes made my stomach roll (which is difficult to do) so this isn't for the faint of heart and really not recommended for those under 16. Otherwise definitely read it if you think you can stomach the blood and limbs flying everywhere. But I definitely dive into this kickass story. You will be rooting for every character as they fight for their lives!

If this was a trilogy novels, there would be one more book to end everything. Somehow, all the horror horror that is happening to DW prisoners ended and Ganta and his friends are released becausethat is happening to DW prisoners ended and Ganta and his friends are released because most of them are wrongly imprisoned.

Shiro is also a problem. She's in too deep with the DW director. Not Tamaki, the tool commited suicide. She also has split personality.

This series apparently addresses about monsters that exist in the hearts of men instead of the one under the bed or the closet.

Finally, the secret is out the bag. Someone finds out about a secret identity. Also, the fights in this one feel very very on edge. ANYONE can die now, and someone major does, and it really hits you bad. The wonderland may be closed down, but the monsters that were created from inside aren't dead yet!

Poor poor Ganta! Betrayal and loss of his friends! Really, how is he going to live from now on?
Now the big secret revealed, and the DW is closed, most of the convicts are released. What will happen next, that is the question.
Also I didn't get some parts:

I made a poll on my youtube channel where I asked my subscribers to vote for which series they would most be interested in watching me review next. This one won by a landslide. I will be trying to complete this series by the end of October since I only have 4 volumes left. What I like about this series is that unlike with chainsaw man, instead of getting a page describing the author's life and his interests and accomplishments, we immediately get about 4 full colour images to set the tone.

SPOILERS AHEAD :) This was certainly one of the better volumes since the plot moved forward quite a bit what with deadman wonderland being shut down, the director committing suicide, and us finally learning more about wretched egg. This volume did not focus much on the characters as it did on how human experimentation is disgusting and how the prison was finally seen for what it truly was. What is most relevant about this is how Shiro is said to be dead and how Ganta is finally released and proven innocent. Ganta doesn't seem to be so heartbroken about Shiro's demise which is strange for several reasons. Many issues seem to have revolved themselves however there are several chapters to go and I have no clue what the author has in mind now that the prison is no more. I am rather confused with regard to what actually happened to Shiro and if there ever was a Shiro to begin with. I feel as though that segment is missing a lot of context. If you know anything about it make sure to let me know. One more thing that is also extremely important to note is how the earthquake that got all of this started to begin with was most likely manmade rather than an act of god.

Oh my goodness these books are so insane at this point it’s just honestly funny. All in all this one was great at the end because of how it wrapped the story up (even though there’s 3 books left) I saw the end of the prison and all the deadman get retrials and found innocent which was super cool to see! I think everyone has finally figured out that Shiro is the wretched egg and the reason behind Gantas classmates dying and the great Tokyo earthquake - Ganta definitly knows and Aw man that was pretty upsetting to see his reaction to Shiro with Azamis head in her hands and that’s kinda when he figured it all out tbh. The craziest thing though was how many plot twists there were in this one and there were a few goodies. Tamaki starting this ENTIRE thing because he fried his PC after the earthquake was WILD. He walked straight by his dying mother for the generator just to play more games and fried his computer in the process only to then disassociate and start living the real world like a game and that’s how the prison came to be. The craziest piece tho was how toto came out as being the actual warden of deadman wonderland and ruined all of tamakis plans - all the information everything that Tamaki had was corrupted through Toto. The whole time Tamaki thought he had control but Toto was in control of him. And then once Tamaki realizes this he just offed himself right at the end of the fight to end the prison and yet that’s all it took. Because once he did that they all moved on with the operation and called it a success. Crazy crazy books haha

Volume 9 covers chapters 37-40

Major turning point for the series. Shiro’s true personality has risen to the surface, and she’s a pure evil monster. The infamous red man that slaughtered Ganta’s class and got him falsely convicted into the Wonderland is none other than his own best friend. Ganta and his gang strike a massive blow against the warden of the prison and pave the way to their escape, but only at the cost of another mastermind behind the creation of the prison to be revealed and accepting that their dear friend Shiro is now their mortal enemy that must be put down.

Thing really took a satisfyingly dark and climactic turn here. Not only was the true villain revealed, but there’s more than one of them. It’s not all doom and gloom, however. Ganta and his gang of rebels have successfully escaped, exposed the Warden for his crimes and rescued the prisoners of the Wonderland from their unjust death sentences.

Ganta tries his hardest to readjust to a normal life outside the prison, but it doesn’t go well. His best friend turns out to be his mortal enemy, he witnesses the death of several comrades, he’s separated from his group and he’s doing some major soul searching.

They may have escaped and put a halt to the Wonderland, but the mastermind and the Red Man/Wretched Egg still pose a threat for Ganta and crew to take down. They still have one final mission to complete before they can wash themselves of the Wonderland once and for all.

First real turning point to the series. The return by Ms. Makina to take out Takami and the prison results in a final battle at Deadman Wonderland and a reappearance of Wretched Egg.

Kataoka really throws a twist with the ending of this volume and it's not just a surprise new enemy or twist on the format we've seen in the book so far. Kataoka seems to have sat down to determine what would mess with Ganta most and then written that story. Wonderfully told.

This concludes the second arc and I really enjoyed it. Tamaki's demise is near but in a way, we only get to meet a one dimensional psychotic that does the most cowardly of actions now that he has been cornered.

All in all, DW follows the path of other shounen manga that focuses on a romance story between two teenagers. I personally liked the touching scenes between Ganta and Shiro and their relationship has been taken to the next level.

However, the moment of peace ends abruptly when something terrible happens...

The arc ends with a bittersweetness that keeps you engaged and curious to know what will happen next.

A little resolution! After the typical shonen battles of last volume, we get a lot of background information this time, and how the evil Fox was really a pawn of someone else the whole time. Ganta suffers even more, because like Shinji Ikari it's his lot in life. But we finally have him find out who the Red Man is! Oh the drama! A promise of a confrontation to come, as Deadman Wonderland closes its doors. It's not quite victory, more like a stalemate, but a innocent verdict is progress.
