The confusing art work and banal plotting led me taking a nine-month(!) break from this series, with a possible DNF on the horizon. But with this series being rated by so many, I feel I need to stick with it, to see if the endgame turns it up and I'm also intrigued to see how the creative team wraps this all up. This volume feels little different to the rest of the series, with the battling sides fighting and conspiring within the prison being interspersed with Mortal Kombat like one-on-ones. An notably interesting mutual declaration of love occurs after one battle. Struggling, but after my nine month break, I think I might be able to complete this series now. A One Star, 3 out of 12 for this volume. 2025 read
(2023 update : its insane how i knew this volume was going to be great, even before reading it back then in 2019, i really do know my reading!) One of the best volumes so far even though i am kind of depressed and don't even feel like reading i read this only so that i may fall to sleep and i finished it. The Greatest four fights in the history of the series. The Greatest styles showcase in the history of the series. The Greatest Origin stories in the history of the series. And The Greatest volume ending too. I Give this series like B- so far but this volume alone takes the biggest piece of the cake A+ loved it glad i read it.
The first part was all action/ fight scenes. Some good backstories too.. I liked how cleverly it was written. Then the next part- my favorite: Shiro &Ganta moments.. They are super sweet together! And they even declared their love to each-other! The ending is perfect! Now that wretched-egg returned, Then let the showdown begin!
Shiro and Ganta were able to defeat Madoka together and he was even able to finally remember his childhood with her but it looks like that could be the last time they'll be that close since Wretched Egg's taken over.
Everyone bands together to fight the KO squad of the Ninben. Once again their painful pasts are brought up, but this time everyone gets the chance to actually show what happened that hurt them. By looking back at their pasts they also get the chance to work through their problems, something they obviously seriously needed. It looks like from here DW is really going to pack on the action, with the prison continuing to descend into complete chaos and major shifts occurring in each of the main characters.
Okay, now THIS is what I'm talking about. We get to learn some of the deepest fears of the Deadmen, we get to see some of the new branches of sin and we get some really kickass fights. Really bloody, really painful fights, but that's okay. :) The backstories were really the highlight for me though. I just loved getting a chance to see all these people before all the terrible stuff went down that stuck them in jail in the first place.
Me apetece poco ahora mismo :/
How could you do this to me? They finally, FINALLY, proclaim their love for each other and then My emotions are real and they are fragile. And then no library in the state of Maryland has the next book in the series. Like, what the actual fuck? Is everyone in on the joke to torment me? Because it's working.
This is where you get to learn the backstory to the majority of the cast. You get to see why they're in prison and most of the stories are actually interesting. It's a bit formulaic but damn if it didn't make the emotional fights that much better. Overall solid volume once more!
Very intriguing. I loved the character backgrounds that were revealed in this volume. Choplin, the transgender woman, has a VERY interesting (and sad) story
Finally some seriously good character development in the right way!!! We finally got to understand the backstory behind each of the deadmen and why they ended up in deadman wonderland and how they unlocked their branch of sin. Honestly it was really cool to see each of them tackle their own ninbas using their own powers and overcoming their own pasta through it. Ngl it was kinda cool to watch them break outta the acid trip and I thought there was some good light hearted humor mixed in throughout the volume. It ended CRAZILY so apparently Shiro died???? If that’s the ACTUAL case there’s gonna be a problem, especially since Ganta literally just looked her in the eye and told her he loves her. Either way the wretched egg woke back up and apparently has the only intention of killing Ganta and Ganta was able to level up his own branch of sin but I think I did that through watching Shiro die. Either way I definitly gotta find book 9 so I can figure this out! I really did like this one I felt the most connected to the characters yet.

A very dark and dreary manga that takes on a whole new meaning to action. Deadman Wonderland raises the bar for dystopian manga in my opinion and I like it! Some scenes made my stomach roll (which is difficult to do) so this isn't for the faint of heart and really not recommended for those under 16. Otherwise definitely read it if you think you can stomach the blood and limbs flying everywhere. But I definitely dive into this kickass story. You will be rooting for every character as they fight for their lives!
I FINALY FINISHED THIS VOLUME!! I took like a 3 month pause after the first fight and when i came back i was a little disconnected from the manga but i still enjoyed it because i have a massive crush on the guy on the cover- Anyways i will read the next volume haha
This volume has a lot of nice merits that try to conclude the second arc of the story. Makina summons three acquaintances and fires most of the guards of DW (who oddly enough resign and join her dangerous quest to arrest Tamaki).
Ganta meanwhile apologizes to Shiro and Azami and the trio want to locate the control center that powers the drug masks. However a handful of unusually powerful Ninben have showed up to foil Ganta and Makina's plans. Despite the unfavorable odds, the very same Deadmen that gave their backs to Ganta in the previous volume have decided to risk their lives and help Ganta.
We get to discover the past of some of the Deadmen and how they likely ended up in DW. We already knew the past of Seiji and Minatsuki from the anime .
I find some parts of the volume to be predictable shounen fanfare with ever more powerful but not quite so enemy-of-the-week with gruelsome super power and the expected power-up ability of the teenager male hero. I will also like to comment the manga is starting to tread away from dystopian horror and more towards mainstream action. I was quite surprised from the more toned down theme of this volume.
Still, it's mostly a good series that deserves the hype despite its flaws.
2.5 rounded down. This was a bit of a stinker. It's a lot of the stuff I like least from this series (battle shonen over adventure based plotting and edginess). Also it seems to throw out the message of fighting against the world cynicism with Ganta not caring about saving anyone and instead planning to kill the villains. There is also a fair chunk of Ganta x Shiro here but I never cared for it. It's all just battle shonen stuff against the special Ko Unit ninbens. All are ok but nothing standout to me. I more appreciate they explore some character backstories though a couple feel excessively edgy like the old guy's and (to a degree) Senji's. The ending seems to be going for more battle shonen stuff with Shiro battling her split half and turning into The Red Man / The Wretched Egg and seems to want to fight Ganta judging by the words of the weird eating other Deadmen guy. Also, Peacock gets weird characterization here. So far I thought they were trans and many people in the story call them trans. But then at other times they are talked about as if they're just a crossdressing gay guy. I don't mind either way but trying to do both is just odd unless they're genderfluid which frankly I don't think is what they're trying to do. Peacock has always talked about themselves as a trans women but here calls themself a gay man. Due to the scene maybe they were trying to reference their past before they realized they were trans but the way it was written made that distinction unclear. Also the blood hair girl is transphobic which fits her toxicity.
This one was structured quite well what with the deadmen we're so in love with going against the ninben. Senji is such a cool character yet what I enjoyed most while reading this volume was how one of the ninben had the power to bring up the tragic pasts of her opponents and causing them great emotional and physical pain simultaneously. It's pretty neat how the original characters all win their fights however this volume ends on a twist whereby we're told that Shiro is the wretched egg and she's about to kill Ganta. All of this after they protected each other during their battle and finally admitted that they're in love.
There's this character who can apparently exchange body parts like the Uchiha clan can swap eyeballs. He's going to be extremely powerful I can already tell since he's doing a Frankenstein but with body parts that contain what makes the deadmen so powerful. I have a feeling that Ganta's about to start his villain arc. I didn't expect such a massive change in direction from where the story started but it still sends shivers down my spine. All of this considering that even the villains are controlled by even more villainous villains. INSANE.
After making amends with his disbanded crew and making an alliance with Commander Makina, Ganta and company make a stand against the army of artificial Deadmen deployed by the prison warden.
A bit of a filler volume. The plot takes a pause as a series of battles between each member of Ganta’s crew takes on a powerful throwaway foe. We learn more about the backstories and origins of Ganta’s crew. My favorites are Crow and Minatsuki and I enjoyed learning more about them.
A bit of a slow volume overall, but I liked learning more about the main cast of side characters. I especially like learning more about Ganta and Shiro’s forgotten childhood in the lab together. They have much better chemistry now than they did at the start of the series. Looks like we're going to get the truth about Shiro’s second personality in the next volume.
