At twenty-eight, Wanda Henke has worked for the Albany Gazette for six years now, the last two as one of their crime reports. When she and her editor attempt to check out a lead, the editor is murdered in cold blood, with her as a witness. A crooked police detective puts her in the murderers’ crosshairs, causing her to flee the city.
Along the way, she stumbles upon an advertisement for a matrimonial service and she sends in her application. By the time she arrives in San Francisco, an offer of marriage from the owner of a lemon orchard. While she’s uncertain, she knows that she can’t keep running forever. With any luck, changing her name and hiding away on a farm will thwart the men following her.
Caleb Hornsby is the owner of the largest Meyer lemon grove in the upstate area. It’s taken him nearly ten years to build up his business. Working night and day has left him little time for courting. And, given the area isn’t exactly teaming with would-be brides, he follows his best friend’s advice and sends for a mail-order bride.
It isn’t until strange men show up in town looking for someone with Wanda’s description that he wonders if he’s married a criminal. Or, worst yet, someone he can no longer trust.

Danger and corruption
When Wanda finds trouble, she really finds trouble, the sort that follows you from city to city, hunting you down. She may be an intrepid reporter but living in fear for her life makes Wanda rethink her future.
Caleb has never been so glad to have friends talk him into getting a bride, Wanda is perfect for him. They have the same quirky sense of humour and I love that they tease and laugh together like children, it shows them both just how different life can be with a loving partner.
This went from a dark and dangerous mystery to a sweet, fun romance. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.

I have loved this series and Nancy Fraser has definitely given us a story with a young lady that needs help. I love that Wanda doesn’t stand around wringing her hands and wailing woe is me. She reacts as you would expect someone who was brave enough to take on the crime beat would, with action. Caleb represents what we like to think of a Pinkerton agent. He doesn’t know why but know he is concerned for Wanda. I really enjoyed this book.

The h sees her boss murdered by a crooked lawman. The next day, her boss is accused of the crimes the lawman actually committed. It becomes clear she needs to flee for her own safety 2x as she was followed & is in danger.

Great book
Another great addition to a great series. I love Wanda's love story. It even had a little suspense in it. I recommend this book.
