Jacques Lacan is renowned as a theoretician of psychoanalysis whose work is still influential in many countries. He refashioned psychoanalysis in the name of philosophy and linguistics at a time when it faced certain intellectual decline. Focusing on key terms in Lacan's often difficult, idiosyncratic development of psychoanalysis, this volume brings new perspectives to the work of an intimidating influential thinker.
I started reading this in passing, and then put it down to do other things. Having returned to it this week, I found the entire project quite enjoyable. Many essays on Lacanian theory, with different subjects, by many of the "big-hitters" in the field. It certainly can be used as a reference, an introduction, and a base to return to in case you want to refresh certain concepts. I will keep it close, because there are many interesting bits that I will need to return to at some point.
It's never easy with Lacan and his motley crew. This intro to the discourse of Lacan is good stuff tho. Even Roudinesco keeps in line and doesn't become exuberantly orhodox (though not everything the master wrote is seminal, Liz; no, really). The intro to queer theory and Lacan also contains some nice remarks about Foucault (though queer theory is more than Foucault, which Dean doesn't really elaborate).
The only thing missing would probably be something on Lacan's symbolic - real - imaginary-distinction and something more media theoretical; perhaps by kittler?
I came across this book whilst I was tidying up my library (I'd forgotten I even had it). It is a helpful supplementary work for Lacan's psychoanalytical theory, which can be relatively difficult for some. The well-chosen articles in the collection emphasize the bridge Lacan built between the Francophone and Germanophone psychoanalytical theories through the legacy of Freud.
