Birth of the Pack
When sixteen-year-old Lily Willison and her friends Nikki, Arielle, and Grazia start up a girls' soccer club and name their team the Weregirls, they soon find themselves drawn into a battle between good and evil. Lily's father, a supernatural guardian, makes contact with Lily after his death and reveals that she has magical powers--as do her friends.
As the girls learn more about their powers, they inadvertently awaken the Breed, sworn enemies of the Weregirls. To fight the Weregirls, the Breed Master calls upon Lily's soccer rival--the rich, conceited, and arrogant Andra Hewlit. Desperate for powers of her own, Andra will do anything she can to destroy Lily and the Weregirls….

I was very disappointed in this book. The writing style was choppy, and the main characters (the Weregirls) show no sense of responsibility towards the powers that they have. Poorly written and boring.

*sigh* Another day, another one star rating. This book was frustrating! None of the characters - teens or adults in this book come across as believable or well written to me. Worse, the main character is VERY immature, annoying and self absorbed - to the point that she makes the offensive comment that child sweatshop workers in Bangladesh are lucky because by stitching her clothes, they get to see 'high end fashion', which they otherwise wouldn't get to see. It just shows how ignorant and insensitive the main character, Lily, is.

Lily complains about how her family isn't rich enough and how she doesn't get to shop nearly as often as she'd like to. So much for a strong female heroine who loves soccer and happens to be a kick-ass werewolf!
The premise sounded good - I adore soccer and werewolf stories especially when they are about females but this book greatly disappointed. I'm just glad I took this book out from the library and didn't spend any money on it. This book might be suitable for a much younger reader - in grade 7 or 8, but I would advise against reading it if you're over 16; but really, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. There are much better paranormal readers out there for preteens and teens.

Determined to start a girls' soccer team, Lily, 16, and her friends get permission, make the field and the goal posts and take themselves everywhere they need to go to play other club teams - even teams of boys. Just as their success becomes palpable, rich girl Andra comes to town and basically has her daddy buy the girls' team out from under Lily and the others. Lily is not about to give up without a fight. However, she has no idea that her fight is going to unleash supernatural forces of good and evil, forces that will change her life and her friends' lives forever.
There is enough drama on just the soccer side of this novel to keep a reader interested, but the Weregirls side is an added bonus. Be aware - girls who only love the supernatural may be put off by all the soccer talk, like my daughter was. Here's hoping that book number two is less about soccer and more about Weregirls and Breeders. Of course, you should be aware that this book is about the supernatural; there are also about 3 dozen swear words (no "f").

Found the book at my library's book sale, and immediately knew I was in for a treat.
Going into this, I knew it would not be a serious read, and I was right. Our main character, Lily, is pretty bratty at times, which makes it hard to like her. There were a few inconsistencies with the story, like her friend "always having money on her", yet couldn't buy the team a soccer ball or uniforms? It seemed like she couldn't buy them simply for the plot. I also disliked how the entire story was written in past-tense, which makes it hard to be in the moment for some of the scenes that are meant to be exciting or tense.
Buuut, It felt like a so-bad-it's-good movie; something you have a bit of a soft spot for. There were parts that had me grinning, and even laughing. I can tell the author put heart into the story, and I was genuinely sad to learn the second book advertised on the back of my copy does not exist.

i actually really liked this book, it was a fun read and i genuinely liked the idea of the weregirls and her dad helping her. I think it was meant for teen audiences but i loved every word of it. i recommend it to anyone who wants a fun read. i truly wish the second book was released, I would love to read it.

While this book was interesting in concept, the main character annoys me. I like the story, but teenage girl-whining kind of turns me off. I liked it, but I wasn't necessarily over the moon about it.

Ugh. I don't usually say this, but I hated this book. The plot was completely random and none of the characters were likeable in any way, shape, or form. A basic summary: Girl is obsessed with soccer. New girl comes to town and breaks up first girl's soccer team. First girl hates new girl. New girl accuses first girl of having magic powers. First girl does not think this strange in the slightest. Then, for no apparent reason, first girl and all her friends get magic powers and have to go defeat the new girl? Or something like that. I even tried rereading this book in case I just missed something, but no. Alas, this is just an example of how fantasy books can go wrong.

Weregirls Birth of the Pack started out very slow in my opinion the story started to pick up pace around chapter five or six. After that the story was more enjoyable. Lily is an awesome character who I think is very misunderstood. Despite the fact that her dad is magical her family life was very real-- kind of what I'd expect the life of two people, one magical and one who's not, to be like when the other doesn't understand or refuses to understand their life. Popescu weaves a very sad and thrilling tale. I hope to read more about his Weregirls.

1.5 stars. It had it's moments, and I tried really hard to like it, but I just couldn't. The main character is so unlikable. All she does is whine and complain and just be genuinely obnoxious. Her three friends were little better than wallpaper. They didn't have any defining traits or characteristics to tell them apart; they were just there. The writing style also read like fanfiction. Decent fanfiction, mind you, but fanfiction nonetheless, which made the whole book seem very immature and hard to get through. Needless to say I won't be reading the sequel.

Wasn't bad, wasn't great thought either. Weak plot, likable enough characters, but a shaky beginning. Needed more details, and the lack of a sequel means that the characters and plots are never to be fully developed. Overall: girls shift forms, play soccer. Non-realistic representation of high school kids, but an entertaining read. Good plot to an extent, though poorly executed. Get from your library, don't waste the money.

Cliche and written as if, like, a high school student was like talking (sort of like that). Interesting plot, but not spectacular. Not great, but not worth buying. Get it from a library. Grades 7-9 might like this book better though.

I usually don't have anything bad to say about a book but this one, I couldn't read it. I had it for three weeks and I couldn't get past the second chapter. I'm not saying it wasn't a good book for someone else, it just didn't interest me.

It was an ok read but I think the title presents itself as y/a werewolf tale and it isn't. More of an urban fantasy read.

the 1st half is realistic fiction. this is a chick flick book, just fun, and they dont exactly turn into werewolves.

This book is AWESOME!!!! It starts off kind of slow, but it gets really good. I felt angry just like Lily every time Andra got away with something. Definitely a book worth reading.
