This new book of photographs by Londie Padelsky offers readers a charming and quirky selection of outhouses from across the western states of America. Each region of the country boasts a different style and no one structure is the same. Some have been lovingly restored and others have aged with time and weather. Like David Stoecklein's series on cowboy gear and ranch style, this new book preserves a time-honored icon of the American West.
Nostalgic and strangely charming - who knew outhouses could spark so much thoughtfulness? My only wish is that there was a bit more writing on the history (and pranks!)
Love the photography in this book. The scenery. Although in real life I don't enjoy using an outhouse, I do find the ones in this book interesting. The few featured in my state (Colorado) were all in Crested Butte, Co. Some are colored so bright and decorated cute. A lot are in California. Such a fun book!
We found this while researching for the new outhouse we built a couple years ago. There's an old 2-seater near the old cabin at a piece of acreage we have in the woods. Too bad it didn't get in this book.
Some people take photos of old barns (we have quite a few in our area) and I never thought of collecting pics of privies! Hmmm...
A quirky, quick, amusing read. A huge majority of the outhouses were in California. I don't know if that was were the author/photographer lived or if there really are more there. Might be all those Hippies with there peace and nature nonsense.
