Harold Lee Lindsey was an American evangelical writer and television host. He wrote a series of popular apocalyptic books – beginning with The Late Great Planet Earth (1970) – asserting that the Apocalypse or end time (including the rapture) was imminent because current events were fulfilling Bible prophecy. He was a Christian Zionist and dispensationalist.
This is an older book, but Hal Lindsey's writing style makes for smooth easy reading. I like books that make me think about things with an eternal perspective.
LINDSEY STILL ARGUES THAT "WE ARE LIVING IN THE GENERATION THAT WILL WITNESS…”
Harold Lee "Hal" Lindsey (born 1929) is a best-selling author, who is currently host of "The Hal Lindsey Report" TV program. (He formerly hosted International Intelligence Briefing on TBN, but the show was removed as being too "pro-Israel"/"anti-Arab"; he provides the financing for the Hal Lindsey Report himself.)
He wrote in the Introduction to this 1998 book, "The purpose of this book is to arrange, in a chronological order, the following near-future developments---relying on the clear teaching of the Bible together with the documented, developing trends in the global economy, the move toward a global government, and the growing movement toward a one-world religion... In the course of this examination, we will look closely at exactly what the Bible has to say concerning the Rapture of the Church. We'll look at the evidence for a Dispensationalist world-view as a necessary element of understanding Bible prophecy...
"We are well on the way... to the fulfillment of all the prophetic events connected with the Second Coming of Jesus, the Messiah. Jesus himself foretold that the generation who saw the scenario of predicted signs begin to all fit together would be the one that would see them all fulfilled. There is little doubt... that we are indeed living in that generation." (Pg. 4-5)
He states, "The most certain proof that we are living out the final chapter of human history can be found in the existence of [Israel]... Yet today, Israel is. The people who against all odds remained a distinct nation in exile has returned to its ancient homeland and been reborn as a nation." (Pg. 10)
He asserts boldly, "There can be no mistake about it, we are now living in the generation of the 'fig tree.' We are living in the generation that will witness the climactic fulfillment of prophecy---the Rapture of the Church followed by a global holocaust that will be ended by the visible return of Jesus Christ to earth." (Pg. 28)
He explains, "Dispensationalism is simply God's outline of history that divides it into several stages of history that are discernible by a careful, inductive study of the Bible. The Bible recognizes the principle of dispensations when it speaks of 'ages past,' 'this present age,' and 'ages to come' (see Ephesians). Dispensationalism recognizes that God spoke at different times, in different ways, to different ages of humanity, according to His plan for the successive stages of history." (Pg. 32) He adds, "[John Nelson] Darby's understanding of dispensational truth not only opened the door to understanding end-time prophecy, but it also brought segments of the Church back into fellowship with the Jews." (Pg. 34)
He cites Sir Robert Anderson's book 'The Coming Prince' for the interpretation of Daniel's prophecy of "seven weeks and sixty-two weeks" [Dan 9:25], and adds, "Others, like [Harold] Hoehner's Chronological Aspects of the Life of Christ, have carried Anderson's calculations out even farther." (Pg. 79)
He alters his earlier perspective on the European Economic Community [EC] slightly from his earlier books: now, he says, "Ten nations out of the current EC will be taken over by the Antichrist as his power base. Seven will come willingly, and overthrowing its leaders will bring in three. From this power base, the Antichrist will bring the whole world under his control. This will be the eighth kingdom, and it will exist for seven years, during the Tribulation." (Pg. 85)
This book adds a few details to Lindsey's previous books, although it's mostly just a restatement of his earlier views (albeit now in chronological order).
I am a fan of Hal Lindsey! This is an older book that I have read before, but I wanted to read again to see if 20 plus years later, even more made predictions might have come to light! I think it's a very interesting and insightful book for anyone.
I love Hal Lindsay, and all that he has and continues to communicate to the world. I read "The Liberation of Planet Earth" back in 1973 as I sat beneath the shade of an old oak tree on the C.W. Post College campus on a sunny spring afternoon...where I "saw the light." I also read the paperback "The Late Great Planet Earth" that was published back in 1970. His message is timeless: See the light, people, before it's too late!
