Holy Ghost Corner

Rate this book
Theresa Elaine Hopson, 46, owner of Miss Thang's Holy Ghost Corner and Church Women's Boutique is puzzled. She can't, for the life of her, figure out why even Baby Doll Henderson, despite her false teeth and her navy-blue-socks-with-yellow-jelly-sandals-wearing self, can find a man and she, Theresa, can't.

Theresa's been looking all of her life, and it seems like the only thing she finds are things that need to say lost. Like, for example, her on and off "friend" and sometime escort, the sneaky businessman, Reverend Parvell Sikes.

So, when church mother Queen-Esther Green reacquaints Theresa with the older woman's backslidden player nephew, Lamont Green, it seems like the same old story.

But this time, Theresa decides to listen to God and what she hears soon brings a smile to her face with the realization that the Holy Ghost has been in her love corner all along.

Holy Ghost Corner follows the lives of several community/church members in Durham, North Carolina. The main character, Theresa, is a successful, single, business woman frustrated in the romance department, struggling with trusting God to send her a worthy husband. In the meantime, many other in community are in a heated battle over abandon public housing, determining whether it should be renovated and continue to serve lower income Blacks or be developed into housing for upper class Whites.

Although the storyline in itself is interesting and attention grabbing, the actually story, unfortunately, is not. As a reader of past novels by this author, I was very disappointed by the execution of the story. The book was filled with stereotypes about African Americans, Christians, and men. In comedy, some stereotypes serve as humorous, but the overuse of these common idiosyncrasies by the author was found to be annoying and off-putting. There were way too many characters, some who were unnecessary, making the story overwhelming and confusing. Everyone loves a little drama, but the drama was over-the-top and unrealistic, as were the dialogues between characters. The men in the book talked liked old school players and pimps, all of them, despite the fact that the book was published in 2006 and appears to be written from a present day perspective. And finally when the main character meets, falls for, and marries her “godly man,” the story was so unbelievable that I wasn’t happy for her, instead I was happy that the book was over.

I hate to sound cold and critical, but this is a book coming from a well-loved author and I expected more. The author has a track record of writing wonderful, Christian stories that are remember well beyond the close of the book. I hope to see future titles from this author focus less on “trying to be funny” and more on presenting a soul-stirring tale about faith and Christian living.

Holy Ghost Corner is an absolute delight! Michele Andrea Bowen delivers a hilarious and heartwarming story that will stick with you long after you've turned the last page. Set in a vibrant African American church community, the novel expertly blends humor, faith, and relatable characters. Bowen's witty writing had me laughing out loud throughout, while also touching on deeper themes of love, friendship, and spiritual growth. The colorful cast of characters feels so real, you'll wish you could join their congregation! This book is a true gem that deserves all 5 stars. If you're looking for a feel-good read that will lift your spirits and leave you with a smile, Holy Ghost Corner is the perfect choice. Highly recommended for fans of inspirational fiction with a generous dose of humor.

Thus far, the entire series is superb. However, this book is my favorite so far. So much so, I read it in one day! It's 3:43AM and I'm just going to bed! I couldn't stop reading until it was finished!!!!

I'm still reading this book. It is not the 'deepest' read, but it is full of truth (therefore comic), and politics about socializing in the house of God.

This book had me rolling all the way through the last chapter. I lived in North Carolina for a few years so I could relate to the area which made a huge diffrence. The author is down to earth and tells you like it is and there is not a charector in the book someone can't relate to at some point in their life. The theme of the book is waiting on God and that is hard even for those of us who have had a rosey life with no heart aches.

This book was awful, poorly edited and trashy. It's supposed to focus on chuch-going black folk, but they are as countrified ghetto as they want to be. Also, either the author or the editor missed a lot of errors with the use of some African American jargon. And if I read one more African American book where the women are outfitted in St. John, one of the most boring, bland clothing lines I've ever seen. DO NOT read this book. It's a waste of time.

I usually like Bowen's books but this one was a little slow moving for me. The comical moments were a little forced.

I wasn’t going to do a review on this book, but I HAD to comment on the author’s overuse of clothes/outfit descriptions. This was extremely annoying and unnecessary. The book could have been 20 pages shorter without her describing everything that each character was wearing.

Some of the African-American stereotypes were comical, while some others were slightly offensive.

There were a ton of characters, and some of them added nothing to the story.

In spite of its flaws, the book held me captive. It was entertaining, and as soon as I read the last line, I already found myself missing the colorful characters. If this were a television series, I would watch it specifically to see characters like Baby Doll and Mr. Lacy. The characters feel like people that I know, and I will certainly miss them after closing this book.

This is the second book by Michele Bowen that I have read. The story line is good but the writing style is a problem. There are times when the author goes into great detail to describe something that really does not need to be described as it does not add any value to the story. There are also times when the author gives you the back story to a character whose back story you don't really need. There are times when you are introduced to a character that does absolutely nothing for the story and if the character had never been mentioned you would not have missed anything. I did enjoy the story and am hoping that the next book that I read by this written the story moves at a faster pace and that the story is not drawn out.

The book was ok but I found several grammatical errors. It was hard to hold my interest in the book. I would put it down for several days and then pick it back up to try to hold my interest. All in all for me I was disappointed.

Good read. Is connected with other books.
My suggestion is to read the books in the order that they were released in. Then you will see the connections. This story was a great love story; about how to love yourself before you can and should love someone else.

This is a good book and I love this series of books. While this is a Christian book, there is a good amount of scandal and drama in it. I love the scriptures and who doesn’t love a happy ending. If you need a good and entertaining book, this is it.

This is my serving time reading and I gotta say that His spoke to me so deeply and clearly. I going through some things and I could relate to the characters and their yearning desires. Those prayers I copied and prayed myself. God granted me peace.

This book is about how you should keep God first and everything you want would be added. Theresa Hopson is business woman that loves the Lord, but she is still looking for a man. Parvell Skyes is the man that she has been seeing, but she is not interested in him. In addition to finding true happiness she owns a Boutique and she calls by the name Hoochie Mamma. Lamont is a man that she meets, and he is far from her ideal man because he has`nt went to church in years. Those two connect over trying to rebuilt their old neighborhood Cashmere Estates. This book would have you laughing out loud, and almost in tears at the same time, not my favorite by Bowen but a decent read.

This book really made me miss my old church home in Brooklyn. The shananigans, old fogeys gossiping, busting a two-step in the sanctuary because of the holy ghost, the hip hop-influenced gospel..those are some of the things I miss that reminded me of that in this book. In the end, everyone in this book got what they deserved. The author also showed me some scriptures I wasn't familiar with before that makes me look at marriage from a different perspective..a Christian perspective actually.I hope to pull out the rest of this author's books from my shelves to read if they're similar to this.

This was an awesome book by Michele Bowen! It is one that definitely made me cry, laugh, hollar, cry some more, praise God, laugh, and then shout again. This is a must read for God's Single Daughters and it should really make the book club reads list!
It is so hard to find a book that is steep in Biblical principles and this one, is just that. I totally enjoyed this book and yes, I am going to buy more books by Michele Bowen and I hope that you go out and do the same!
Happy Reading

WOW, God is Good and he is sending down blessings if only we knew to raise our heads instead of cowering under the umbrella and that's just part of the message in this book. It is part funny, part inspirational and part just too true to be believed. If you are a member of a church you know that the devil walks among us seeking whom he can devour and sometimes he's sitting right next to you. The Holy Ghost Corner is a Goodread

I have enjoyed ALL of Ms Bowen's books. Every last one. The only thing about them though, you just cannot get them often. This book about a young successful female entrepreneur successful in everything but a man, and the man who has done everything but let God lead makes for a nice story. There are other little plots in the story but the books are soo good.
