PERSONAL RESPONSE:
I liked this book. The art style was very pleasing to the eye and was very sharp. The book was very cliche with how they set up the story. It was the old young boy gets surprised by a random girl in his room who asks him to go on an adventure with her. I like how the main character is a lot different from most. He is a lot calmer in a dangerous and new situation instead of being helpless and weak. The villains inside of the book were very bland and like all of the rest of them. They were also not very big and were defeated very easily. I can relate to this book a lot because Kakeru wins through sheer dumb luck.

PLOT:
The story starts with the main character waving his mom and sister off on their trip. Kakaru opened the door to his room when there was a random girl inside of his room. The girl asked him to come and help her friend who was injured. The girl then possessed Kakaru and walked him over to the place where her friend was at. As soon as he opens the door one of the girlfriends blasts him with a massive amount of psychic power. After the misunderstanding is cleared up it is revealed that the girl and her friends are on the run from the government. The enemies outside of the house that they are inside of break-in but the person who blasted Kakeru defeated all of them. Out of nowhere another person comes out with a gun and aims it at Kakeru. The girl tries to convince the man to not kill Kakaru and leave him out of it because he had nothing to do with anything. The man fires his gun at Kakaru. Kakaru ends up deflecting the bullet away with a psychic power but it turns out that it was just a piece of ceiling that had fallen.

CHARACTERIZATION:
This book was more of an introduction to all of the characters so the characters had no time to go through changes and get deep into their character. Kakaru before this incident was a very bland and normal 15-year-old boy. A big part of his character is he has very good observational skills and a lot of sheer dumb luck. In one of the fight scenes between him and an illusion psychic user he used his observational skills very well and was able to find out what her power was and what she was doing with it. He is also very good at lying and tricking his opponents into thinking that he is a very powerful psychic.

SETTING:
The setting in this book is very different from most other books because this book is a manga and most manga are set in Japan where the culture is completely different. This means whenever they are inside of a building the will most likely have socks on or slippers. They always take their shoes off when they are entering another building except for when they go to school. The time when this takes place is not stated inside of the book. I think that the story is taking place it a time period that is close to the present day because the cities look very modern.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
I would recommend this book to people who are older and more mature because of all of the inappropriate content that is inside of the book. The book itself has a rating on it saying that the book is for people 16 and up. I would also recommend this book to anyone who likes the art style that is used. I would not recommend this book to one gender because this book is easy for people to relate to. I would also recommend this book to anyone who likes the sci-fi genre.

I'm not sure what to make of this thing.

On one hand, I found it entertaining, especially how this totally normal guy gets out of trouble through sheer dumb luck and observational skills. On the other hand, there's not a whole lot of content. When I think about it, not a whole lot of anything really happened. Also, I'm not sure how I feel about the characters because there isn't a whole lot of anything on them, either.

I think this one's gonna be one I'll have to read another volume or two before I can really pass judgement.

pretty typical of it's age. great art style, questionable and lots of fan service, mediocre to good story.

i don't know if it's because i've consumed a lot of fantasy, but psychics being the 'magic' of this world feels really boring and overdone. maybe in 2007 it wasn't as common, but as of 2024 it's extremely common.

The pacing was probably the worst part. For your typical shounen reader there's hope for this battle manga to expand on its premise but this first volume was not the best.

A light, enjoyable story of a junior high school boy whose summer vacation suddenly goes from boring to thrilling when he's contacted by a group of teen espers running from a mysterious organization.

It seems that young Kakeru is no ordinary boy; he too has some amazing psychic ability--not actually revealed in this volume. Despite the lad's diffident attitude, he's very observant a perhaps a bit cocky when he puts a plan over.

I loved this volume. The story is fast but starts by giving us a nice foundation of who the heck Kakeru is. Then things start kicking into action and can I just say..... everyone in this thing is so beautiful!?!? Especially Jonoi? Did I mention how beautiful Jonoi is?

Right now I just like the whole "Farmers" and "Prodigies" thing so much. I damn right am going to read the rest of the volumes.

Kakeru is just a 15 year old boy with a boring life. But when he is left home alone, his life goes from boring to very unusual.

It was a pretty fun manga. I liked the characters well enough and think the story is pretty interesting so far. The use of psychics and each having their own different powers is pretty cool too. Over all, it is a good start to a manga series that I think I'll enjoy.

Seemed like the typical hero gets powers, hero meets girl, etc, but the plot twists are quite good. There're the little typical hero changes foe's mind and foe becomes good subplots, but it works...

Very good. Very modern, although the beginning was a little awkward... It got better though. I wish there wasn't so much adolescent lust in it :/

The pacing is off, the characters' faces are too similar and the fan service is very in-your-face. The series gets a bit better after volume one, but never exceeds mediocre.

It's very apparent this is from the creator of Get Backers - it's exuberantly done, with some edginess, and with a set of characters that you instantly want to follow. This first volume barely sets up the premise and we're given a LOT of mysteries that are going to likely be slowly revealed in following volumes.

Story: Life is normal for Kakeru until a girl suddenly appears asking for his help. Not one to turn down a beautiful (and fanservicey) girl, Kakeru soon becomes embroiled with a small group of rebel teens who have psychic abilities. It seems they are on the run from a shadowy government organization that imprisons them so they can use their powers. As Kakero learns about the different abilities, he finds that he also has a connection to the teens and that meeting up with the girl was not random. More importantly, he may have the most special ability of all.

Of course, this being a shounen manga, their will be power ups and fights as our hero Kakeru learns of his powers and battles the enemy. We don't learn from this manga what he can do - just that it was not by accident that he became involved with the rebel group. In the course of the first volume he becomes one of the hunted and is forced to battle psychics who don't mind working for the government and might have their own morality and sanity issues.

The art is quite fun and lively and Kakeru would be very hard to dislike. Because there was so much mystery set up and so little revealed, there is much to look forward to in later volumes. Admittedly, I loved Get Backers so I am curious to see where this series will go.
