Stefano Zuffi (Milano, 24 maggio 1961) è uno storico dell'arte italiano.
Laureato alla Statale di Milano, è autore di numerosi volumi di divulgazione culturale, legati alla storia dell'arte soprattutto rinascimentale e barocca. Consulente editoriale per la casa editrice Electa, è stato responsabile di alcune collane di successo al grande pubblico, come gli Artbook e, dal 2002, I dizionari dell'arte.
Tra le sue pubblicazioni, una monografia su Dürer, Il Grande Atlante della Pittura (Electa) e il saggio Rinascimento (Mondadori): tradotte in più lingue, hanno raggiunto una tiratura di oltre un milione e mezzo di copie vendute in tutto il mondo.
Ha partecipato alla trasmissione Riguardiamoli condotta da Salvatore Maria Fares su RETEDUE della Radio Svizzera Italiana, curando una rubrica dedicata all' arte e alle mostre.
Ricopre l'incarico di responsabile culturale dell'Associazione Amici di Brera ed è presidente dell'Associazione Amici del Poldi Pezzoli.
È inoltre curatore della Pinacoteca Podesti di Ancona.
The book is set up in double-page spreads, each concentrating on one painting in full color, with additional small detail illustrations and explanations. It covers the Renaissance in Italy chronologically from 1400-1600.
The beauty of this book is that it contains almost 400 pages of color illustrations. While it does not go into depth about any one artist, technique, or Italian history, it gives a good overview of the gorgeous art from the Renaissance in Italy.
when I was in college, I ignored panofsky and Iconology. I used to read this stuff about the symbolism in "realistic" paintings and think what is the point. i found discussions of the effect of types of paint more interesting than symbolism. This book is wonderful with hundreds of two page spreads, each illustrating a theme and focusing on a single painting and details from that painting exemplifying that. theme. On the negative side, a two page spread with maybe 300 words explaining neo-Platonism is way too superficial.; But still I like the focus on looking at individual paintings. It is a wonderful book for people who do not know a lot about the subject and it is very visual. Highly recommended for beginners. I know I will enjoy my next trip to Italy a lot more because of it.
De auteur gebruikt een originele invalshoek om telkens met een kernwoord een stap/kenmerk/techniek van de Italiaanse renaissanceschilderkunst te duiden. Hoewel het eerst eclectisch lijkt, krijg je er toch ook een mooi overzicht van de evolutie van de renaissanceschilderkunst mee én een overzicht van de belangrijkste protagonisten.
Great introductory list with facts and details of Renaissance art in the 15th and 16th century. Lovely reproductions (those colors!) although a bit small. But at least now I know which big Taschen books to buy :)
Dit boek was deels men reisgids in Bologna om renaissance-werken te ontdekken in Italië. Details blijven er redelijk op de oppervlakte en het had weinig diepgang. Een boeiende selectie kunstenaars, termen en stukken werd gemaakt maar deze bleef sterk binnen de Vasariaanse canon wat een gemiste kans is om een écht, omvattend beeld te schetsen van de Renaissance. De begrippen geven een houvast om werken te benaderen maar zijn niet specifiek genoeg uitgeklaard om nieuwe perspectieven te openen. Extra ster om mij te wijzen op de Uccello in Bologna en Schifanoia in Ferrara!
This is a nice book for a slightly advanced beginner or somebody who wants to brush of on their Renaissance painting. Professor Zuffi's selection of artworks, along with his commentary, create a sense of an epoch from the first emergence of new trends, through crises, to the ultimate twilight and transition into something new.
I found the glimpses of the author's preferences (such as the mildly irritated way in which he writes about Mannerism) refreshing.
