Cordell Atwood’s best friend and boss found a successful mail-order bride through a matchmaker, and Cord decides it’s time for him to marry since he’s started his own Texas horse ranch. With the forward town flirt casting her eyes from Marshall to him, he decides to write to the matchmaker as well. When Miss Moriah Williams arrives from Georgia, he’s never seen such a beautiful woman, but the moment he opens his mouth, she turns to ice.
Moriah Williams is tired of being seen as just a beautiful object that men want to possess. Since her parents are pressuring her into a shallow marriage, she decides to go west as a mail-order bride. Men of the West were known to be real, practical men who appreciate hard work. But she barely gets out of the stagecoach before her intended is telling her how beautiful she is.
Janice Cole Hopkins grew up in rural Wilkes County, North Carolina, with an Appalachian heritage. She loved stories and learned to read when she was five. She graduated from Appalachian State University with degrees in history and reading, and she also taught school, wrote and published in magazines, and dreamed of someday publishing a historical novel. Janice has always attended church and has done short and long term mission work. All the profits from her books go to a scholarship fund for missionary children. Sown in Dark Soil is a stand alone novel and is the second book in her Appalachian Roots series.
A Match for Cord The Matchmaker—Agatha Returns, Book 10 By: Janice Cole Hopkins Narrated by: Douglas Birk, EJ Lavery
Are Moriah's looks the only this a suitor can see? The beauty believes this is the only reason the man her parents have set her up with is interested in. Looks and money. Well, there is more to her than that, and she will not let this controlling man be her husband. Being a mail order bride may be the answer. Those men have better sense, right? When Moriah meets Cord though, he immediately compliments her beauty. Is that all he sees? Does he not want more to his wife? Cord is taken immediately with Moriah. Yes, she is beautiful, but he knows there is so much more to her. How can he make her realize it? This is a wonderful story of self realization and love. It gives us a look at true friendship and what the west was like. Moriah herself is a bit shallow, but Janice Cole Hopkins lets us take her journey through love and faith to realize her own faults. Cord is sweet and loving and extremely patient. I loved this look at ideals that are still constant today and how human nature is just that. It's a fabulous story of faith and love and brings a warmth to my heart.
Douglas Birk and EJ Lavery bring this gem to life. Birk has the perfect voice for historical romance, and he creates Cord to be a man of honor. Lavery works through the layers of Moriah as she learns what love truly is. They both bring out the emotions and let us enjoy the journey.
Moriah hates being judged for her looks, she detests that people make their judgement without getting to know her first...yet that is exactly what she does to Cord. She judges him by his first observations and the actions of other men, even when he proves himself different. It takes tragedy, separation and danger for Moriah to realise how foolish she has been...she misjudged Cord. Whilst I am glad she finally comes to her senses, her dithering and doubts are very frustrating, Cord is so thoughtful, warm and patient....he is a real prize as her husband. And as brief as it is, it is lovely to return to Marshall Ranch and Callie and Marshall too. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
This is a very good book. It is sweet and clean yet full of adventure, friendship, and romance. Cord is super excited to have his bride arrive. But when she seems very cool and he has no idea the reason. So he keeps saying the wrong thing but doesn't realize what his mistake is. And Moriah . . . . Well you'll need to read this one and I'm sure you will enjoy it. Love is patient!
The narration is not the greatest. E.J. Lavery is wonderful with the female voices, but as I have said before, Mr. Birk just does not sound natural. The male voices do not fit the characters very well and seem very "forced" or "put on". Hopefully these comments will be taken as intended--constructive.
I requested this audiobook from the author and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
I listened to this one on audio. Sometimes it is hard to review a book on audio. Why? Well sometimes you love the book, yet the narrator got on your nerves at times. This is the case here. I have listened to this narrator before and the way he narrates was ok for that book. However this time I thought he had a whinny voice which did not go with the character. The female narrator was good. I did really love that there were two narrators. I still liked the audiobook.
The book itself was great. I liked the storyline and characters. I thought they were well written and there was a lot of research and thought that went into this story. It is very realistic.
A nice and sweet read. It was written by Janice Cole Hopkins very well. Moriah is a well to do young and beautiful woman. She being courted by a man who only wants her for her beauty. So Moriah decides to look into becoming a bride. Cord ordered a bride threw a matchmaker and is matched with Moriah. When she arrives they marry and Moriah has decided she wants to wait until she knows him better. Will it happen? Or will the man who courted her come for her. Enjoyable read.
Seems Agatha May have gotten this on right. Cord is the ranch foreman for Marshall, his best friend and has sent for a bride. Moriah is a young, beautiful woman from a wealthy family. Her parents have arranged a marriage for her to an older wealthy man. She does not want him for a husband so she and her ladies maid answer advertisements to be brides. You will enjoy discovering how they find their happily ever after.
He has his ranch and a wife would be nice, others have gotten mail order brides. Cord was puzzled by the coolnest she showed him. While he was thoughtful and kind. She had always been judged and looked at as one of beauty. It takes a mishap to awake her and realize what she has. The-narration of the woman was good, the man could be more natural Overall these are great audio's to enjoy, that takes one back to a different era of time, with a matchmaker. Given audio for my voluntary review
This is somewhat of a continuation of the book, A Match For Marshall. Both are written about friends who decide to use a matrimonial organization to find brides & their brides escaping from the South (one from South Carolina & the other from Georgia). Both of the husbands are great material too and have been friends for years. Both are full of fun romantic stuff if you’re looking for that & are easy reading.
I would have given this five stars, but Moriah made it very difficult. I understood her aversion to be seen only for her beauty, but honestly, why couldn’t she communicate with Cord about it? That situation was too drawn out.
Otherwise, the suspense and danger were thrilling to read, and Moriah and Cord’s romance that finally happened was very sweet.
I had an afternoon available, so I looked for a Janice Cole Hopkins story. A MATCH FOR CORD is filled with excitement and twists and turns. Moriah is intent on not letting her beauty determine who she marries. I listened to the audio, and I loved the lesson of patience that Cord illustrated.
I enjoyed the book! Moriah had to learn not to let her past and look forward to the present and future. There was excitement during the last half of the book. This book is standalone even though it is part of a series. I recommend reading this book!
Cord was the foreman and good friend of Marshall on his ranch in "A Match for Marshall". It was great to be able to read Cord's story of finding his love. Excellent!
Moriah Williams has an instant negative reaction to Cord’s innocent comment that she is beautiful. Now most women would appreciate that comment but Moriah is tired of being judged only on her beauty. Frankly I feel sorry for Cord. I really enjoyed this book as Cord tries to figure out his new wife. We get the right amount of romance, humor and conflict.
Cord- a horse rancher Mariah- very beautiful and sees it as a curse, I( I thought that part was a little bit extreme) . I enjoyed reading this engaging story with a loving hea. KU
I listened to the audiobook of this story. Narrator was great. Moriah hates being treated as a beautiful object and hates the idea of marrying Mr Stone, even more. One option is to become a mail order bride quickly, before her parents marry her off. She is matched to a man in Texas named Cordell. So she secretly leaves Georgia to meet her intended. Of course, the first thing out of his mouth is how beautiful she is, which puts her off. Can't anyone just treat her like a normal woman. Follow them as they figure things out. I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.
Only a few women can grasp the concept of their beauty being a curse, but that's the underlying theme in this story! There's so much more to a person than looks, but I love how she comes to understand how her past has made HER the prejudiced one! I enjoyed the dual narrators, but the child voices can use some work! Overall, I'm giving this book a 4½ stars!
