Five out of five stars.
I received this book for free from the author, Haven Price, in exchange for an honest review.
Vivian and her ex, Seth the psycho, were obsessed with finding immortality when they were together. And although Vivian is the one that really pushed it in the beginning, she finally recognised the horrific means they were using to get there and made a break from…all of it.
I’ll be honest, I think we need to acknowledge just how truly messed up her idea was. And the whole thing of how she kind of forced Seth to go along with it. And that it took SIX SEPARATE EVENTS for her to realise what they were doing was wrong. I feel like we (collective we, readers and characters) just weren’t horrified enough at her mindset and it was just filed away as “oh well, everyone makes mistakes”. Ummm, this was a bit more than a mistake (or six).
But I digress.
Quin was wonderful as hitmen go. I mean he was very understanding of Vivian’s whole deal, which makes sense. The guy kills for money so…
I did feel like he was hiding something towards the end, but my guess wasn’t quite right.
For a debut novel this was really well written. Plenty of conflict, mystery, and tension, a nice dose of spice, and a fairly unique plot!
More mystery injected at the end so I’m looking forward to finding out what’s going on there in the next book!
When the author reached out to me for a review, I was pretty much on the verge of overlooking this particular genre for a while, as I had stuffed myself with paranormal fantasy novels lately and my palette needed a change.
And then I wondered why not one more! Turns out it’s gonna get to “why not 3 more”! Because I am going to end up reading the whole series apparently, it’s that fascinating!
Haven, your first book has completely taken me by surprise. The story has a fresh touch, the appropriate balance of romance and emotions, and well-written characters! I was under the assumption that the tropes and sequences would turn out to be just like most other stories of this genre, but it’s genuinely a good read!
I couldn’t wait to start the next book in the series, so already on it! For those in doubt give it a try, it’s worth your time, because the blurb does not even begin to explain the crux within.
I was asked by the author if I would be interested in reading an ARC copy of book 2 in the Vivian Foxworthy series. I read the blurb and knew it was right up my street so I said YES, and knew I had to read book 1 first.
A witch and a hit man walk into a bar…
When Vivian was 16 her boyfriend Seth was obsessed with finding a way to become immortal.
Now it is 10 years later, she and Seth are no longer together and they are not immortal.
We are introduced to Quin when he flirts with her when they meet in a bar...the one night stand they almost had was put off for a couple of days due to his work...and when they do eventually have the one night stand it doesn't stop there.
Quin tells her he is a hitman and asks for her help to find someone who does not want to be found. He shows her a picture of the person he is looking for and low and behold it is Seth.
Seth is looking for a particular tree that contains a fruit that can give a person immortality.
Through flashbacks we find that originally Seth was the one who brought up the possibility of them becoming immortal, but then when Vivian obtained a book with a way to do this, he wanted to pull out especially when it would involve killing 7 people to obtain their souls. She talks him into it, but then leaves him after the 6th murder.
When Vivian becomes the Guardian of the tree that Seth is looking for, she knows Seth is going to be hunting her.
I knew Quin was hiding something from Vivian but when we found out he was actually working for Seth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is Haven's debut novel and for a debut it is extremely well written.
I am really looking forward to reading book 2 Challenged Magic.
Initially, I was on board with the MC. She changed her life around so that she was not killing innocent people, but still was riding in the grey. She had a one night stand after years of a dry spell. Cool. She agrees to help hunt down her evil ex-boyfriend of 10 Years to be murdered, not cool.
Spoiler Why? Because he was the good one who tried to talk the MC out of bad things. She convinced him to do bad things. Then, all of a sudden after insisting they kill a lot of innocent people, she believes he is the problem and she leaves him.
Does he follow, no. Does he do anything to hurt her. No. Yet, as soon as someone want to murder him, she is good with that. After a 10 year relationship, she believes he does not deserve a chance to explain to her what’s happening and she doesn’t even attempt to convince him to be better. He was young and being abused at home for years, when she convinced him down a dark path.
I end up skimming this book at some point. If the bad guy was the one who started the mess, I would be fine. But he was a good, decent human being who was then left on the edge of a cliff. In my opinion, the MC should not have been involved as she was. That is what made this a two star book. The storyline.
Darkened Magic is a gripping, genre-blending tale perfect for fans of supernatural romance with a darker edge. Full of blood magic, suspense, dreamwalking, and just the right amount of spice, this book pulls you in and doesn’t let go.
Vivian and her sister run a cozy little magic shop, trying to keep their heads down and live a quiet life. But Vivian’s past—filled with betrayal, heartbreak, addiction, and dangerous magic—isn’t done with her. Not by a long shot.
As her world begins to unravel, she crosses paths with a mysterious hitman, a threatening ex, and an immortal child. The story weaves together themes of found family, enemies-to-lovers, magical chaos, and a fate far worse than death. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, the plot twists again—and somehow, it works every time.
The characters are vivid and deeply human, even when they’re immortal. You’ll root for them, fear for them, and feel like you truly know them by the end.
Atmospheric, addictive, and enchantingly dark—this book casts a spell you won’t want to break. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Vivian has had a truly difficult life, with a mom that was an addict. Trying to keep her mom and herself alive, vivian didn’t get to be a kid. She lived as an adult and on the dark side very young, trying to find ways to feed them and keep their lights on and bills paid.
Not really a surprise Vivian turned to the Dark and dangerous side of life once her mom died. Seth was the only one there for Vivian, but then that went even darker too - so Vivian ran.
Surprisingly she meets someone and he hires her to help with a job, but the job unexpectedly turns back to her past and she has to face the past as well as herself. Dark and dangerous indeed.
A fascinating story and an absolutely worthwhile read.
It has twists and turns and betrayals that just break your heart! It’s a really great read and a nice book to pick up as an easy read with a little spice but written eloquently and doesn’t go on as you can find in other books.
✨Tropes✨ - Supernatural creatures - Hidden society - Mysterious MMC - Spicy - Snarky FMC - Unusual powerful blood magic - Forced proximity - Lovers to enemies - Betrayal - Found family
“Sometimes good things come out of really bad situations.”
3.75 ⭐️ This was a really unique plot and kept me pretty intrigued throughout. I liked seeing the backstory between Seth and Viv and seeing Viv grow as a person. Some nice spice sprinkled in, twists, magic and spells. I think the book was really well written. Enough world building that wasn’t overwhelming for the reader and pretty easy to follow along. Can’t wait to see what happens in Book 2.
Finished this book in a day and I have to say it was a fun quick read! Even though it was a short book, a lot happened! I really liked getting to know the characters and their back story was so good! This book really has a little bit of everything; Magic, romance, a dark past, found family, spice, a good story, unexpected plot twists.. And so much more! Very excited to read the next book in the series!
Just ignore the ugly cover and give this a try if you like paranormal/urban fantasy stories with a bit of mystery and oh there is spice. I loved the writing and the exploration of Vivian's loneliness and torturing guilt. It was so melancholic and good at the same time. Quin definitely added to that. It looks like her trauma, mystery and action will keep unravelling in the next book and I am excited to read it.
Ok, the first time I read this, I was way too sick. Today, I reread it, well, I feel like I read it for the first time. I don’t do spoilers, but…the reality of the battle between good and evil in this book, the amount of HOT SPICE and the play the everyone who has a past, no matter how it is can have a future. Book 2 RIGHT NOW PLEASE. I read this in a day, it is just that good…damn.kate_reads_everything
A well-written solid story. I wasn't exactly sure what I was getting into with this book, but it was decent overall. It had a good solid plot with twists, nice character development and unexpected bites of spice. It also was a really good length that focused on the important information and didn't drag on with random details.
Vivian is a great magician. I like this book, the magic was great I loved all the elements of magic and spells. The plot was great with the little twist. I really liked reading Vivian and Seth rivalry and all the stuff from there past. Quin was a great love interest and the spice was good. A good read if you like the fantasy magic realm
I like the emotional honesty the characters have. Their relationships mirror many real relationships. The one night stand slowly develops into something more, or does it. Just like real life, this emotionally damaged woman tries to understand feeling, her fears. Trust is not in her vocabulary.
This book kept my interest so well that I read it in 2 days (probably 4 hours total). Very suspenseful and keeps you wanting more!!! Also some good hints for what could be in the next book, which I can’t wait to read!!!!
What a unique story! I really enjoyed the author’s writing and read this all in one sitting. I wish we had learned more about what led Seth to become so unhinged and obsessed with immortality. I was not expecting the twist at all… I can’t wait to read the next one.
A hitman wanted to find a crazy person from her past? Absolutely I borrowed this book right away. This entertaining, magical treasure hunt story contains no black cats or broomsticks. A very spicy good versus evil with dark fairy tales. I'm curious what goes wrong in the next book!
