Lots of good history in here; I especially loved learning about the historical insight into the development of music theory. This book is pretty dated (1915), but most of the information was still accurate as far as I could discern (I would supplement my reading with a bit of research). The downside is that the first chapters are bogged down with 'uncivilized/savage' vs 'civilized' language, which became genuinely laborious to listen to. Racism has its place front and center in the opening chapters, which is unfortunate, given that I would (and I'm sure others would too) have liked to interact with the same musicological research without that disgusting overlay. In general, excluding those opening chapters, the various subjects are treated with care and with an earnest admiration of music. I definitely appreciated that the many contributors seemed honest yet sensitive in their philosophy and evaluation of music throughout history.
