“You’re a doctor? Can you help me PARALYZE someone?"
Mel’s eyes bugged out like he’d just met a serial killer.
“Only temporarily, of course. I’m a writer, and I need one of my characters to be incapacitated.”
Mel regained his color, grinned, and gave me the needed information in graphic detail…I was only able to eat half a slice of pizza.
It was my introduction into the world of emergency medicine. It was Mel’s into fiction. We were both fascinated. A year and a half later we were married.
Thus began the partnership known as Hannah Alexander.*

Mom has been telling me how good this book was and I finally decided to read it.
Most books about marriages of convenience, I avoid. Most of them mock the sacredness of of marriage and use the situation just to be alward. This book was not about that. This book was more about two people working together to help others, and finding love in the middle of it.
I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more by Hannah Alexander.
This was amazing. The romance was perfect, as it progressed naturally but didn't overpower anything. The characters were relatable and wonderful.
It's clean and it doesn't have the traditional Christian 'a character gets saved' scene, so it felt like a natural progressing friendship.
Recommended 13+ for suggestive themes by the (awesome) sisters-in-law on the wedding day, murder, and the MC doing surgery multiple times (not graphic).
I was pleasantly suprised with this book. I didn't expect to like it so much. It drew me in from the very beginning. I was timid at first, but once I took myself out of it I really liked it. That sounds confusing...but when I read I often put myself in the story. I couldn't do that here and still enjoy it, my relationship with my husband is too precious and I couldn't imagine being in Keara's position or Gloria's...or Elam's either. So...once I took myself out it was a great read!
I thoroughly enjoyed The Wedding Kiss from start to finish. This book is so good! If you are a fan of marriage of convenience stories, this is one you will probably enjoy.
Keara is a woman who does not have much confidence in herself as far as romantic interests are concerned. She spent much of her youth taking care of an invalid mother and did not learn to flirt or be womanly like other girls. I really liked Keara. She is a kind and loving person who gives freely of herself. When she finds herself in a bind and has nowhere else to turn, she reluctantly brings up the idea of a marriage of convenience with her friend, Elam.
Elam has never seen Keara as more than a friend. How could he? He is still grieving for his late wife, Gloria, the mother of his three children. The fact that Gloria and Keara were best friends helps Elam decide that he must help Keara - it is what his wife would want him to do. So, the two marry. But, as they seal their vows with a kiss, both Elam and Keara recognize that there is a lot more emotion behind the kiss than simple friendship.
That alone is a great premise for a story, however, this book takes it up another notch. Add in the arrival of an injured woman who ushers danger right to their doorstep. This is a situation that the young couple must immediately deal with. It adds a lot of interesting tension to the story on top of the attraction (and guilt) that both are struggling to handle. Great book! (4.5 stars)
I received this book from the author in a giveaway and was not required to write a review.
I love the cover of The Wedding Kiss by Hannah Alexander. It has been languishing on my Kindle for years, so I decided to finally read it.
The opening scenes immediately drew me in, and I was fascinated with Keara's situation and character. I liked Elam as well. However, I felt the pacing of the book was slow, and I found it hard to want to finish. I kept going because I did want to see how the mystery was resolved. I felt like some details could have been eliminated to make a more cohesive story.
Overall, it was an okay read, and I am glad to have read another book I have owned forever 😄. Having read and loved other books by this author, I know this is not their best work.
In Euraka Springs, Arkansas, of 1901, just surviving was often all a person could do. Having choices about the direction of their lives might be possible for some, but not for Keara. When she agreed to marry Elam Jensen, Keara was doing what was necessary, and she had resigned herself to a marriage of convenience. Keara and Elam would forgo love and passion in favor of obligation.
On their wedding day, when Keara and Elam share their first kiss, a marriage made of practicality becomes much less about convenience! Keara and Elam discover a passion they never realized they had between them.
But the appearance of an unexpected visitor sporting a gunshot wound on their doorstep on their wedding night could draw Keara and Elam into possible mortal danger.
I loved this book, I couldn't put it down. It's full of romance and suspense and mystery and a little bit of danger. It has a happy ending. The book gets better as you read it and I hope there's a sequel to it coming out soon! I'd say it's good for ages 14 and up. So if you have a 14+ year old at home that is into romance and mystery but you don't want her to read trashy romance novels give this one a try or if you are looking for good clean romance and mystery then I'd highly recommend this one!
This is a clean, light read about a marriage of convenience. The first two or three chapters were wonderful and I felt wrapped up in the characters and thought, "Yay!, This is going to be good." But by chapter 3 or 4 another character is stirred "right into the soup" at the most inopportune time (their wedding) and my attention faltered. I was like, "who invited YOU"?
At this point, the couple who were center stage at the outset are kind of shoved to the side while we concentrate on who is trying to kill this mysterious visitor. But I wasn't at all sure why I should care.
This is one of those rare times where I felt that a book would have been better as a novella. The bones of the story are good but there's just too much padding and the focus of the story is lost. I think you could cut 200 of the 300 pages and still be good.
That being said, if you want a light, clean read with a touch of mystery you may love this book.
*many thanks to the author who provided me with a free copy of this novel. I was not required to leave any review positive or negative
This is my first book by Hannah Alexander, and it certainly won't be the last one! A perfect blend of mystery and romance, I truly enjoyed this story. The romance developed in a very natural and sweet way, and the suspenseful, mysterious portion of the story kept me turning pages. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys Christian fiction, especially historical Christian fiction.
I received a copy of this book from the author, but the views in this review are my honest opinion.
Ugh, this one suffers from some serious issues. Mostly, a total disconnect with the advertised story (the title, cover(s), and synopsis all failing to portray the story), and a mishmash of historical assumptions that have little basis in actual history. The timeline is all over the place too, with some serious historical errors.
--Trail of Tears was claimed to have affected Cherokee removed from Pennsylvania...um, yeah, Cherokee weren't native to PA. It was also claimed to have been "recent" in 1900 (it happened primarily in the 1830s) and a family was mentioned to have stopped along the way to Oklahoma for a while and been hidden from removal (Arkansas population wasn't removed as their land was part of a separate treaty, but many headed to OK later on as the free land was offered and the tribal headquarters was founded in Tahlequah.). A large crux of the side story concerns a character who tried to prevent Pennsylvania Cherokee from being sent to Oklahoma. Again, no Cherokee there (until present day), and no Pennsylvania tribes were sent to Oklahoma.
--women's corsets took a beating: Ugh, when will this trope die??? A lady either wore some form of underwear or she was a heathen, either stays or a corset, until women burned their bras in the 1960s. And you can't just go borrowing them from a friend at the drop of a hat, as all women had to be custom fitted at a corsetier since they were all of different shapes. Tight lacing wasn't practiced by most women and if she hadn't worn one, she couldn't have borrowed dresses from other women who did, either, as her chest would have been flat as a fritter after a life of working with no support.
--the romance was nonexistent...not generally a problem for me, but when I got told this was a book about falling in love, I kinda expected to see more than 3-4 pages of it, and fancy that, all she had to do to make him love her was wear dresses for a few weeks and keep house for him...ugh.
--the woman who ran for her life on a priceless horse...but somehow she wasn't hugely rich in her home back east? Comfortable but not wealthy? And then she just flees through the night for weeks on end with no money or food and miraculously survives?
--name dropping: time changed from 1900-1901 at some point during a story that took place during a single season and then some random dude name drops having spent time on tour with Roosevelt while he was president (but Teddy took office in 1901 so why did the guy leave his cushy Washington job if so?)...this is a good way to really pull me out of a story from sheer unlikelihood.
--Farmers without weather: this is smaller, but it really made me laugh because as an Arkansan, weather is everything. Hot and cold, rainy or dry. If it's not frequently rainy, it's drought season and everyone's worried about herd forage. Seriously couldn't muster up one rainy day in the entire book? Haha.
--Unfinished business: it just...ended? Like that? I still have so many questions. I suspect the author has no answer to them.
Probably won't ever try a historical by this author team again. Maybe will try the suspense I own but I'm not in a hurry to do so.
This is a historical fiction marriage of convenience story. Since Elam's wife died, Keira has been helping to hold his family together. When it becomes apparent that she will need to leave town due to her father's seemingly poor choices, he offers to marry her. Transitioning from friends to more takes time. This is a beautiful story about the power of commitment and unconditional love. There is a bit of suspense and mystery that is thrown into the plot as well. I did not feel like the plot was predictable. I enjoyed this book.
I forgot how much I enjoy these authors’ writing. They have a way of writing that draws you into the story and makes you want to hang on for the ride. They do an excellent job of creating a mystery suspense that isn’t predictable, but also isn’t frustrating. I enjoyed the main characters and story. I wish there had been a little more to the story post them figuring out they truly care about each other, like a chapter would have been great. That is an aspect of novels I really seem to enjoy right now. A chapter of “normal”.
I loved Keara’s honesty and love for children, friends, and especially Elam. She didn’t understand her value or how much others relied on her. She gave of herself because it was the right thing to do and because she loved. Elam was grieving the loss of his wife but doing better than just surviving because of Keara.
The character development in this book was great! I loved Susannah, Elam’s sisters, and many of the other side characters. And the villain was as awful as he should be. Definitely an enjoyable read.
In 1901 in Eureka Springs Arkansas little is left for Keara McBride to do but marry Elam Jensen when she finds she is left homeless. Elams' wife has died leaving him with 3 children to raise so it seems it will work for both of them. However, it is just a marriage of convenience. When a mysterious visitor shows up on their wedding day they wonder if any future they might have had will actually materialize.
Beginning with a friendship, this book was showing it is possible to be able to find yourself in love, and that a true friendship can be found if you can show/give forgiveness for someone who shows remorse or harm toward you. A lot of emotional highs and lows which keeps you interested, so you keep reading. I felt it with all these characters making this book worth reading. J🎅
Very "vanilla" read, nothing special about it. This was not a typical marriage of convenience story. That aspect played very little into the plot, which was disappointing. The main story was a little mystery that involved a visitor who showed up just after the couple was married. Probably one try with this author is enough for me.
Overall, the story was an interesting story, but it dragged a little toward the end. I found myself more intrigued by the mystery in the book than the romance of the two main characters. While the concept was good, their connection seemed forced. In fact, the plot of "the kiss" seemed secondary to the mystery plot. A good 3-star read.
A sweet story about how one action scan change everything...and I'm not just talking about the romance. This book is full of amazing characters and intrigue. Fighting injustice, saving the weak, and falling in love...it's all here...
I just did not enjoy this book..I almost gave up on it but I kept pushing through to the end.. The entire book took place in less than a week's time and the end was so predictable and abrupt, in my opinion..I'm glad I stuck with it but it was a struggle..Just wasn't for me, I guess...
I really enjoyed this book. I’m used to Hannah Alexander writing more modern books, but this one was just as good. If you like Christian books with action and suspense thrown in, you’ll like this!
I liked the excitement in this love triangle. Love is so beautiful and refreshing, even in the middle of much stress. God love prevails. I recommend this book to everyone as it is about honor, careful opinions, love! Loved the suspense.
Although the story began with a typical marriage of convenience, I was not expecting the adventure that was mixed in with the very gentle romance. It was a pleasant surprise, and the book was less cliche than I was guessing it would be.
As books about widows/widowers finding love go, this one was a deeper story than most I've read. The author digs deeper into the feelings of losing the love of your life, remarriage and surprisingly finding love again. But also having that guilt or feeling of betrayal for loving a new person. It was really good. Elam and Keara were sweet and so cute. I liked them a lot.
The conflict was a little confusing to me. It seemed a little random and sudden in the middle of this deep love story. When it was first introduced it seemed a little late, though it had been building, I just wasn't expecting it. But it did work in the end and was a unique conflict. I learned a little something from it.
I was so excited when I stumbled upon this book at our local library. It is a good book. I enjoyed the characters and the sweet romance in the book. I look forward to reading more from this author.
What happens when a kiss between a new husband and wife turns a "practical" wedding venture into something else?
That's exactly the dilemma that Keara and Elam Jensen face when the kiss shared on their wedding day turns their decision marry for "non-romantic" reasons on its head.
The Wedding Kiss, set in Eureka Springs, Ark., is a sweet tale, filled with love, kindness and a twist of suspense - which Hannah Alexander is known for in their novels.
The novel opens with Keara needing to marry her friend Elam out of convenience - she needs a place to live - after her father loses the farm. He also needs someone to care for his children following his wife Gloria's death.
At first it seems like the perfect solution. Then an unexpected visitor (Gloria's sister) and the mysterious happenings in the countryside help Keara and Elam take a deeper look at their friendship - and ultimately - love.
I really liked The Wedding Kiss (and not just because I call Hannah Alexander - a.k.a. Cheryl Hodde a friend.) It's a nice story that weaves together love, suspense and a bit of Arkansas history.
The characters are vividly drawn - so you feel like they could literally walk off the pages. You'll find yourself cheering for Keara and Elem as their relationship deepens and becomes stronger - through adversity and trials. It will also make you slow down and savor the storyline as you dive into life in turn of the century Eureka Springs.
In all, picking up this book is like meeting a friend for coffee. It's warm, cozy and will leave you feeling happy at the end.
I give this book a solid four out of five. If you are looking for a nice "snowy day" read, then pick up The Wedding Kiss.
Hannah… please allow me to quote just a little part from your wonderful book. When I read this, I knew this is something special…
“You may kiss the bride.”
Keara raised her face to his and shut her eyes . . . the scent of soap and bay rum reached her as warm lips – Elam’s lips – found a perfect fit against hers . . . If not for his arms drawing her close and holding her securely, she would have toppled to the floor. Oh my… This changed everything.
…A thousand thoughts and emotions attacked Elam through the softness of Keara’s lips . . . for a moment, he couldn’t move except to grip Keara’s arms more tightly . . . He’d never dreamed that the touch of her lips, the taste of them against his, could make him feel this way.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Wedding Kiss – from start to finish. What an awesome story! The lines quoted above are just one part of the wonder and beauty of this story.
Keara and Elam both married out of necessity – a marriage of convenience. As such, they both figured they would forgo love and passion – but could it grow? Read the story to see…
I think Keara and Elam are so much happier – and their story is a success story – because of the respect they showed each other. Their circumstances force them to marry before either of them are ready, but… well, I really can’t say more without giving too much away.
It’s the perfect blend of romance and mystery. The characters are intriguing and true to life. The plot and sub-plots are well developed and not at all easy to guess – it’s the perfect story!
Hannah Alexander are great authors. I’ve read many of their books and this one is just one of the best. The cover of the book is so beautiful and it just makes the book come alive. The Wedding Kiss tells the story of two people who need each other and end up getting married, to solve all of their problems. They didn’t realize they loved each other until the kiss at their wedding. At home the same day of their wedding problems come, not in their marriage, but outside. One after another things keep happening to shake up this couple. No matter what their faith in God gets them through. The Wedding Kiss is full of action, adventure, mystery, love, hope and forgiveness. This is a novel that will keep you reading, because it is captivating. The characters are beautifully developed and the whole book is altogether entertaining. Hannah Alexander is a master at storytelling and painting pictures in your mind, and gives you a satisfying and meaningful ending. I don’t keep many of the books I read, but you can be sure that I will be keeping The Wedding Kiss. Hannah Alexander is one of my favorite authors. So, I highly recommend this amazing novel. You won’t be able to put it down and The Wedding Kiss deserves a five-star review.
