The Emergence of Islam, an English rendering of a series of twelve lectures delivered by M. Hamidullah, attempts to highlight the basic thrust of Islamic teachings and to outline the formative period of Islam’s intellectual and institutional history. The author has eminently succeeded in conveying a synthetic picture of Islam as it emerged in the early period of its history-as a religion, as a community, as a state, and as a n intellectual tradition.

The book answers the questions a common man raises about Islam. It gives rational and logical reasons that a mind can conceive and comprehend.

This was edited and translated version of 12 lectures delivered by m Hamidullah and found better then Urdu version of it.

Book divided into two portions
1st covering history of Quran and Hadith and development of Islamic jurisprudence and law
2nd portion covers administration of different departments during times of Prophet (PBUH) , including defense , education , law and finance .

you may find its different portions just repetition of what every Muslim hears or read from childhood or included in curriculum but it provide food for thought . there is a question answer session at the end of each chapter which will answer the queries arising during reading, upto some extent but one need to search for the rest of the answers themselves.

I was impressed by logical approach of M Hamidullah sahab . He even discussed evolution theory in a way which most of our Muslims will find alien as they generally discard this theory with lame explanations or not even giving explanation at all.

At the same time I noticed a contradiction too big,
In the starting chapter on History of revelation and preservation of Quran writer concluded that previous revealed books had lost their integrity because of absence of reliable sources about preservation of these books and later on in a chapter on law he said that at some instances Allah commanded Muhammad (PBUH) to follow rules presented in these books.

anyhow this was a good read . Too simple for anyone to read and would recommend those who want a brief outline of the above said topics
