Rafiuddin takes on the case of religion and modernity from the best possible foundational standpoint, that is from the human self and its consciousness. Unfortunately, neither the author nor his work is widely known but there would rarely be anyone who has tried to provide a well connected response to all the complicated questions related to life and consciousness in the universe. A response that is well rooted in direct analysis of human nature, its evolution and all the philosophical, moral, social and pragmatic constructs it incessantly tries to make sense of including reason, intuition, instincts, morality, education, history, politics and war etc.

Although, Rafiuddin doesn't acknowledge it directly (as the book does not seem to be formally edited being originally a Doctoral dissertation), his thesis seems to borrow heavily from Iqbal's theories and understanding of consciousness as well as Islamic scriptural and historical sources. The book deserves to be well known and should provide basis for many religious modernist philosophies.

Dr Rafi-ud-din elaborated the "philosophy of the self" efficiently in this book. "Refutation of Marxism" which is the key goal of this writing along with his comments on other "theories of Human nature" are excellently explained, keeping all the principles of Logic in sight.
Following are some of my favourite quotes from the book:

"All of our wants beyond those that corresponds to the bare satisfaction of our instinctive animal desires are unnecessary as far as we are animals; they are necessary as far as we are men." (while commenting on the Marx's materialism)

"The only difference between the worshipper and the scientist is that while the former comes in contact with reality as a whole ,the later sees only fraction of it. The appreciation of beauty through the symbol of words should not be less interesting affair than its appreciation through the symbols of line, curve or color." (while elaborating the philosophy of Prayer)

"A prophet is a rare personality who rises to a higher degree of self-consciousness by a special favor of nature and is able to know and teach mankind the law of the self." (while elaborating the purpose of prophethood)
