The Moonspinners

Rate this book
When Nicola arrives in Crete a day early, she gets more than just an extra day of holiday. She comes to a village where no one can be trusted, and she becomes involved in a murder mystery that puts her own life in danger. This story is set in a small village in the mountains of Crete. This is an island where people have strong feelings, where arguments begin suddenly, and end quickly. And Nicola has arrived in the middle of an argument that could end very quickly - with a gun.

If you've picked up this book hoping to read a fictionalized version of the Disney script for the film starring Hayley Mills, then forget it. As much as I love that film, and return to it again and again (primarily for the scenery), this novel is far and away the better version. If you've never been to Crete, don't worry, Mary Stewart will take you there. From detailed but not over-meticulous descriptions, you will see the White Mountains, swim in the Bay of Dolphins, and walk alongside Nicola Ferris as she aides new friend Mark in his search for his brother Colin. Still in love with Greece? Then pick up _My Brother Michael_ and _This Rough Magic_. You won't be disappointed.

I wish I had a copy of this book. And this movie, as a matter of fact. I fell for the movie first, then snatched the book up when I realized it was on my mom's shelves and fell much harder for the book. I love the characters, the setting, the plot, everything about it is fun and fantastic. I really ought to read more Mary Stewart...

I’m unaware if this book was written as an abridged version but whatever the case, I found it highly disappointing. The plot line was interesting but the way it was conveyed wasn’t really convincing with jumps and conclusions that I as a reader couldn’t really appreciate.

It’s a quick read, however and may help learners’ of English language.

This is an abridged version of the original by Mary Stewart written for a younger audience. Though I haven't read it, the original may be a better read.
