Don Brown (not to be confused with Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown) writes military fiction like nobody else. Even though I have never served in the armed forces and probably never will, Mr. Brown brings to life the triumphs and tragedies our soldiers face in a big way. For some, that may hit too close to home; however, I grew up in a military neighborhood, and reading something like this makes me respect those who protect our country all the more. I only wish Don Brown was better known; even in the realm of Christian fiction, he doesn't have much name recognition. I will be praying that changes...and soon.
This is another book where I picked it up as it sounded good but then it got added to my giant TBR pile and forgotten. SInce this is the year that I decided to start attacking my TBR pile, this book finally got picked up once again. Man am I kicking myself now that I did not read this book as soon as I got it. A great military thriller. Mr. Brown writes with such passion and is a talented storyteller. He captures the details and his characters emotions in a way that pulls you into the story and makes you connected to the characters. I was with Gunner through the whole journey as he raced to see if the rumors were true about some Americans still held captive by the North Koreans. I do plan to go back and check out Mr. Brown's other books.
Lieutenant Commander Gunner McCormick, a Navy intelligence officer aboard the US Harry Truman aircraft carrier, stationed in the Yellow Sea uses his private fortune on his 30 day leave to infiltrate North Korea and rescue the American POW left over from the Korean War.
Why I started this book: Military thriller by a Navy officer about Korea? Sign me up.
Why I finished this book: If you can suspend belief that a Navy officer has a private fortune of +$600,000 that he can draw from at will, a high security source who is willing to pass him information about American POWs but unwilling to rescue said POWs, and Gunner's ability to make repeated contact with clandestine Christians smuggling people out of North Korea, with only a week's lead time, this might be the book for you. Of course the stereotype characters might trip you up... the more I write this review, the more surprised I am that I finished this book. The story did draw me in, so that I only saw the plot holes in the rearview window.
I finished the book but considered ditching it a few times. The characters and story were interesting but I dislike the political and religious propaganda. I can get that for free on Faux news.
“Thunder In The Morning Calm” by Don Brown was a thrilling suspense novel that takes you behind enemy lines in North Korea. When lead character, Lieutenant Commander Gunner McCormick, was briefed on his mission to the Yellow Sea, he discovers a hopeful, yet disturbing piece of information about the Korean war. After 60 years, it seemed like North Korea still held prisoners of war in their camps. Gunner’s grandfather (whom he never met) never came home from Korea. Determined, Gunner sets off on a mission to bring the left behind soldiers home - or die trying.
Y’all, very rarely do I fall in love with a military book, but this one did it! The whole novel was so well done, I’m looking into the next two books in the series. I loved how the author threw all types of point of view into the story to give it dimension. One minute, you can be reading from Gunner’s point of view on his mission and the next, you’re back on the USS Truman in the Yellow Sea as two US pilots are shot at by the North Koreans. Then, there’s the few times when the author takes a page and relays the viewpoint of the North Koreans as they seek to find out what happened to “Dear Leader’s” favorite warship. The author nailed all the personalities and I loved it!
Another thing I liked was how the book was about relationships as much as it was the mission. From the first page till the very last, you feel the depth of friendship between the old soldiers locked away in North Korea, the trust and respect in Gunner’s commando team, his mother’s prayer back in the US and most importantly, the genuineness of the underground church in North Korea when one Believer meets another for the first time. So while there was a lot of military action and terms, the book had a very personal element that made all the characters real and lifelike.
Conclusion: When you read the back cover that says the “bravery, duty, and family love will keep you reading straight through to the last page,” they were right. I read this book in two days, and I’m normally a slower reader. Every page flowed seamlessly from scene to scene. There were also a lot of maps to help you understand the Korean geography and how Gunner’s commando team planned to get in and out of the country. All I can say is - this was an excellent book! Will definitely be reading more from this author soon! If you like military fiction or are interested in books set in different countries, or that mentions the Korean War, check out “Thunder In The Morning Calm!”
I was pleasantly surprised with this book. After some of the horrible books I had started that had great reviews, (they had horrible language and descriptive sex, immediately off my kindle) I was wary about this one. Would it hold up to what I expected. I was glad to say it did. For a book that is military based, it had clean language, and even the violence was toned down. It is Christian based, very patriotic and if someone has any sort of leaning to socialism/communism they will hate it. Although I found it to speed through some of the story, there were other times I was wondering if these events needed to be in it. Could there have been enough drama without the extra military drama? Since I have no experience in the military and even less knowledge of the Navy, particularly those serving in areas with high political tension it could be more realistic than I think.
I enjoyed the fictional president being tough, and not backing down I felt a pride in my country that I have not felt in a few years. It made me wish he was our president and that someone of his caliber was actually able to run and win.
The last page made me cry, I didn't think I would but he struck my emotional cord in a manner I didn't anticipate. I think this is one of the best books I have read this year.

This is a far cry from a military techno thriller, unless you know absolutely nothing about firearms, aircraft, ships or missiles, and have no idea what the Aegis Combat System is. As others have said it is much more like a comic book or Saturday matinee than a novel. This is sad, because the setup is essentially good, and another writer could have put something good together here. Thankfully I got this from the library, so no money wasted. I will not waste any more time on this author. The tech errors are so bad, you expect the Captain of a modern US aircraft carrier to direct his First Lieutenant to open the ports and run out the guns. Characters in this book are 2D at best. From what I read about the author, he was a JAG officer for some years, so it's possible his JAG-based books might be better. It's too bad that on this one he spent so much time injecting religion and current political jabs to use even Wikipedia to check some of his tech details. Sorry Brown, just knowing terms like SM-3 or M16 isn't enough, you actually have to have some idea of their capabilities and operations. Apparently the complete lack of barracks-language or blood and gore is connected to the religious angle.
I'm a big fan of listening to Dick Hill from all the W.E.B. Griffin books that he's done. He did a fantastic job on this book, the first of Don Brown's I've listened to. I loved the character development, the action, the explanations. It wasn't dry, we didn't get bogged down in any of the technical or military terms. The ending was so emotional and so heartfelt. I highly recommend this book, and anything narrated by Dick Hill!
My husband I loved this book that open our eyes to those soldiers missing in action ,especially those who have been forgotten because it " couldn't be possible they are still alive". While it is a work of military fiction it helps keep hope alive that the missing could still be brought home.
As another reviewer commented, this was like watching Fox News. There is a dig at the Obama administration concerning the purchase of some malfunctioning defense mechanism. There is a president who orders a North Korean frigate destroyed after North Korean pilots shot missiles at US fighter jets (who were deliberately flying on the border of the air space) (the pilots of which were then ordered to, and did, fire at the North Korean jets and bring one of them down) and North Korean missiles were shot at the aircraft carrier where the US jets landed (one of which hit the ship because of the defective defense mechanism). When the Secretary of State insists that diplomatic measures should be attempted before sinking the ship, the president goes into a diatribe about how terrible the UN is.
But what gets it a 2 star from me is the unbelievable and not very well written story. The core of the story is about a rogue Navy intelligence officer who gets 30 days leave and in less than a week, hires an ex-Army ranger, a retired Korean general, buys a plane and weapons and undertakes a "mission" to rescue American POWs from the Korean War still being held (in their 80's) in a North Korean prisoner of war camp. The story switches between the Navy officers activities, the POW camp, the action involving the US Navy and North Korea, and the Navy officer's mother (who is the daughter of a Marine MIA in Korea). The characters are poorly developed and there are too many action scenes with little differentiation -- the same buildup and conclusion, over and over.
An exciting read. Lieutenant Commander Gunner McCormick is assigned to carrier strike force 10 in the ocean. They are assigned to go along with the South Koreans for maneuvers in the Yellow Sea. During his briefing he finds out there is a rumor of POW's from the Korean war being held in North Korea somewhere. Gunnar takes his 30 day leave and tells his commander that he is going on vacation to Japan. He ends up hiring two retired men one a former SEAL and one from the Japanese government to help him locate these elderly POW's. Will he be able to find these men and rescue them? Will one of them be his grandfather who went MIA during that war? Will they be able to get into North Korea and find them. A suspenseful story.
One of my favorite books by Don Brown. My dad fought in the Korean War and it has always irritated me when people call it a conflict. This book is an adrenaline rush from beginning to end. The characters are well developed and I felt connected to them. There is a twist at the end that you won’t see coming. Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys military suspense.
This was my first adventure with Don Brown, and I wasn't disappointed in the least. Although there were some technical military inaccuracies, the overall story wasn't adversely impacted by them. With plenty of action, this thriller delivered in a big way! I'll be on the lookout for future installments in the Pacific Rim series.
Excellent adventure tale with an ending that will move you to tears. 5 stars for sure.
Loved this book. Characters were excellent. As someone who lost their father in the Vietnam war, I was moved by the authenticity of the story and bumblebees of the characters. A must read.
If you only watch FOX News, this is the novel for you. Put on your MAGA hat, thump your bible, and be prepared for a cascade of right-wing religious drivel.
I gave Thunder in the Morning Calm 5 stars because the story was great. It kept me in suspense most of the time. I could imagine myself being in the story. Being a military wife, this book reminded me of when my husband was still in the military & serving during the Vietnam war.
now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.
The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.
i would highly recommend this author and this book.

My Review:
I received Thunder In the Morning Calm by Don Brown compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review and I was not disappointed. After reading The Malacca Conspiracy, I knew I had to read this one as well. Don Brown's writing style is designed to capture you within the first chapter and from then on, he guarantees to keep you glued to the book until you finish the final page. Believing that there are still missing MIA's that are unaccounted for, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book and see how it turns out.
From the time, Gunner reads a small blurb outlined in a top-secret memo that it may or may not be true about MIA's still being held in North Korea in prison camps and that one of them may just be his missing grandfather, he takes a chance to fund a risky search and rescue mission. Relying on retired US Army Lt Colonel Jack Davenport "Jackrabbit" and retired Colonel Jung-Hoon Sohn of the Army of the Republic of Korea to help him locate the prison camps, Gunner is prepared to save any American being held there even if it turns out its not his grandfather.
Where this journey will lead them will completely alter the lives of everyone involved and bring about an unexpected ending. I award this novel a perfect 5 out of 5 stars and can't wait to keep adding more novels by Don Brown to my library. If you love military, black ops, rescue stories, then this one will not disappoint but make you a fan for life!
An intelligence officer risks his life, rank and fortune to rescue POW's locked away in North Korea. This is a daring, suspenseful novel that brings back to mind the question: do we still have POW's lost in hellish places? A really good read with strong characters.
