Jan Phillips' Book of Hours is a tapestry of threads from the arts, science, sacred texts and her own mystical poetry. It is the story of one woman s journey from Catholicism to a new cosmology of global communion and co-creation. It is Rumi-meets-Teilhard, Catherine of Siena meets Dorothy Day a compelling illustration of how spiritual practice leads to heightened creativity leads to inspired evolutionary action. It s like being picked up by the shirtsleeves and carried to the mountaintop. It doesn t hurt but the view most certainly changes. A book to help you: * evolve yourself forward as a spiritual and creative agent of change * find out why you believe what you believe and update your mental software * expand your intuitive and creative bandwidth * discover meaningful ways to express your commitments * clarify the distinctions between spirituality and religion
Subtitled "The rise of spiritual intelligence & evolutionary Creativity". Absolutely love Jan Phillips' works. Phillips mixes in her poetry, shares the spiritual ideas of others & generally makes you look @ the world & your responsibility to it differently.
The ending lines of a poem: I am here to live out the meaning of God, not to argue about what God means. Don't make me laugh with that pompous talk about true religions. Get up on your feet and do something. Show me what it looks like to be a believer.
There are so many pithy thoughts, my book is filled with turned down corners......Phillips can supply the motivation to move armies of positive people!
Jan Phillips has created a book that provides an invitation to re-think our concepts of religion, of spirituality, of God, and of life as we live it and as it will advance toward the step after this existence. She accomplishes this in the format of the medieval Book of Hours, that revered but near forgotten method for people to stay spiritually minded: each chapter is titled after the days of the week, and each of these seven days is divided into the format of the Hour - Matins (midnight), Lauds (sunrise), Prime (6 AM)Terce (9 AM), Sext (noon), None (3 PM), Vespers (sunset), and Compline (9PM). The named chapters are Monday/Awakening, Tuesday/Discipline and Practice, Wednesday/Creativity and New Cosmology, Thursday/The Mystery of Evil, Friday/Beyond Duality, Saturday/Joy and Desire, and Sunday/Mysticism and Oneness. Careful attention to all of these signs provide insight into the direction this very wise writer wishes to guide us.
Phillips was raised a Catholic and even entered a convent to become a nun, but when her concept of God was challenged she left the convent and entered a life of seeking the real meaning of creation and of the oneness that binds us all. In a warm yet very learned manner Phillips explores not only her Christian upbringing she challenged as a postulate, but she also includes the spiritual practices of Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Native American, atheism and post-theism. 'This book is designed ... to give people a way to stay spiritually grounded throughout the day. it is based on the premise that we are in consort with our own Source and Creator, the Invisible one known as God and the visible organic one known as earth. I am writing it for the ones who already know there is no distance between the Divine and the mortal, who already engage in an unmediated love affair with the Creator, and who, in such large numbers, have had to to running form the churches that refuse to be relevant in these times of crisis. Many of these words will seem blasphemous to religious adherents who think there is only one way to be faithful, but one of the greatest ways we can serve each other is to challenge each other's thoughts.' 'e are not here to debate what God means. We are here to live out the meaning of God, to BE the God we want to see in the world.'
From this precis Jan Phillips offers her own poetry in celebration of her insights, offers quotations from great thinkers, philosophers, enlightened writers, saints, scientists, artists - all in pages rich with supportive words that stress the importance of discovering the God within us: 'we need to inquire within, dip down into out own well of wisdom and come up with a faith that is true to who we are and what we know. If something you've been taught doesn't ring true, alter it. If it's too small to contain your magnitude, expand it. if it polarizes people, excludes people, leads to anything other than understanding and openness, broaden or expand it. It is up to us to create new canons of compassion and morality. We cannot wait for leaders to rise up from the masses and save us from ourselves - we are the leaders and this is our time.'
Phillips words offer support and conviction to take responsibility for creating a meaningful spiritual world. "Every encounter e have is colored by our thoughts. if we approach an experience with fear or negativity, the experience will be a receptacle for that. If we enter into it with kindness and a sense of communion, the experience will contain that. Our thoughts precede and create our reality. Begin to observe your thoughts and direct them.' 'If there is a God, I am in awe. If there is not a God, I am in greater awe.' There is not a page in this book that doesn't contain some thoughts or statements that fail to inspire. Jan Phillips sincerely accompanies us on a journey to discover ourselves. If ever there were a time for this book to be placed in our reach, it is now.
Structured in the format of a week-long book of hours, Jan Phillips' latest creation contains stories of her experiences, her thoughts, poetry, song lyrics, and prayers, as well as quotes from a variety of spiritual sources - all with the aim of helping the reader to let go of illusions, beliefs, and ways of thinking that no longer work, and to stretch our minds and souls to embody the Divine Presence and ultimately mend our world.
Jan Phillips is a treasure! She's inspiring, funny, and a breath of fresh air for those of us who do not take the Bible literally. She says that we,the myth-makers and co-creators of the 21st century, must grow spiritually and help heal this world of ours.
I am not often inspired to write reviews, especially when I am only on the second chapter! This book is so beautiful and life-changing that I felt compelled to do so. I am now meditating each morning, reading Jan's words and feeling so close to God. Amazing.
