Wow, this is the kind of author I wish I could sit down and have a conversation with. Very rarely have I encountered someone with such vast knowledge of all three major Abrahamic religions who doesn't say anything stupid and baseless about at least one of the three, but this is a welcome exception. I'm also quite familiar with other "Muhammad in the Bible" theories, some of which even cite this author, but the book exceeded my expectations in a huge way. Dr. Dawud at times seems bitter at Christians for believing in the Trinity, but I believe it's only because he himself feels that he was duped when he was a Catholic priest and is now glad to have found Islam. Some of his reliance on the dubious Gospel of Barnabas, as well as his theories about similarities between words of different languages, do come off as a bit of a reach at times, but he nonetheless entertains and even partly convinces me of what he's saying. If nothing else, the book is fascinating, and never boring for a history and theology geek like me.
There is no doubt that this book was written by a sincere heart, by one learned in Christian & Jewish history and scriptures. There are some very strong cases made within this book that honestly refute many Christian claims about Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon them both).
Speaking honestly though, this book would now appear to be outdated, both in terms of language and polemics within the Islamic-Christian discourse. This is not surprising as the book is around a century old now and the discourse has progressed so much since the 1970s. But for what is was at its time of writing is truly impressive.
One last note I would mention is that, the author, whilst obviously knowledgeable in Jewish-Christian theology, may not have studied Islamic Aqeedah to a great level as there was a few lines within the book that perhaps didn’t agree with the understanding of Sunni Islam. Maybe it was a case of poor translation into English.
To sum up, I would not recommend a Muslim interested in Islamic-Christian discourse to read this book (unless of course they wanted to update and/or refine it for a modern audience) as it is blatantly outdated and these days there are much better books available.
Bismillah...
It is amazing to see how one man would go through all the trouble to find religion. Deep diving into his own scriptures, becoming a polyglot just to understand the scriptures in their most authentic forms.. eventually finding one that makes the most sense to him after years of research. I love that he puts references to the verses of the Old and New Testaments as well as the Quran.. but I also feel that his reasonings for the linking of words from different languages (mainly Greek, Hebrew and Arabic) could also be referenced to other researches or books that have established them as facts too. All in all.. at a time where most people are either freethinkers or blindly following the religion of their forefathers, this book invokes the interest and passion to learn and to understand the true teachings of our scriptures.. be it the Torah, the Bible, the Quran or what have you.
Professor Dawud, in the course of several interesting chapters, explains how the truth about the prophecy of Muhammad in the Bible was lost due to careless translation from Aramaic into Greek into Latin and finally into English. In his research which involved old manuscripts he found out how the misinterpretation of Bible verses, hid the glad tidings about the rise of the last prophet Muhammad and the coming of God's kingdom.
This is not really a book; these are ramblings of someone convinced of their own position. It is not a scholarly piece of work.
Perhaps I can help summarise the book: "Son of Man" = Muhammad Mispa = Mustapha (Muhammad) Shiloh = Shiluah = Rasulallah (Muhammad) Eudokia = Ahmed (Muhammad) Paraclete (and derivates) = Ahmed (Muhammad) Himda (and derivatives) = Ahmed (Muhammad)
Because - it makes sense to the author. QED
I have oversimplified the treatise, but not by too much. There are a few other arguments in the book, for which the reader can devote their time if they wish.
The normal method of investigation goes: Present evidence, present arguments & reasoning, and then the conclusion naturally follows. Here, the order is critically backward: conclude that Muhammad must be prophesised and then work hard to justify this in various passages. In some cases, the passages are clearly unsupportive and the arguments are painfully contrived. In others, the passages in the Bible (particularly in isolation) are vague enough to insert any myriad of interpretations.
Suffice to say, if you are already Muslim and must believe that Muhammad was prophesised in the Bible, you'll walk away with thinking that the presence of so many pages in a book must constitute definitive proof and the case is iron-clad. Critical thinkers and those not already devoted to the cause may find the arguments weak and reeking of delusion.
