A long time ago Christians believed in reincarnation
“This is an extremely important book, a book providing profound insight and truth, a book which will open minds and remove fears.” ―Brian Weiss, M.D., New York Times bestselling author of Many Lives, Many Masters
This groundbreaking work makes the case that Jesus taught reincarnation and traces the history of reincarnation in Christianity―from Jesus and early Christians through Church councils and the persecution of so-called heretics. Using the latest scholarship and evidence from the Dead Sea Scrolls and Gnostic texts, it also argues persuasively that Jesus was a mystic who taught that our destiny is to unite with the God within. Your view of Jesus―and of Christianity―will never be the same.
“Imaginative and provocative.... Elizabeth Clare Prophet's assertion that not only mystical Gnostics but also a Jewish wisdom teacher like Jesus taught reincarnation is sure to rattle your karmic chain.” ―Marvin Meyer, author of The Gospel of The Hidden Sayings of Jesus
Elizabeth Clare Prophet (1939-2009) was an author, teacher, messenger of the ascended masters and leader of The Summit Lighthouse—an internationally recognized spiritual center for the advancement of inner awakening and soul liberation. For decades Elizabeth's books have been front runners in the movement for individual union with God. Millions of copies have been sold worldwide and published in more than 30 languages. Throughout her lifetime, Elizabeth Clare Prophet walked the path of spiritual adeptship, advancing through the universal initiations common to mystics of both East and West. She taught about this path and described her own experiences for the benefit of all who desire to make spiritual progress. She lectured across North and South America, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, the Philippines, Ghana, Liberia and India. With Her husband, Mark L. Prophet, she led pilgrimages to the Holy Land, Egypt and India. Thousands of people from across the globe attended her four yearly conferences and hundreds of students learned spiritual teachings from her Summit University retreats. Her great desire was to share a spiritual path that would take true seekers, in the tradition of the mystical paths of the world's religions, as far as they could go and needed to go to meet their true teachers, the ascended masters, the archangels and their own Higher Self, face-to-face. Her unpublished writings, lectures and dictations from the ascended masters continue to be released by Summit University Press.
When I read this book in 2001, it was my first exposure to the concept of reincarnation. At the time, I was steeped in a Christian belief system that did not allow for open-minded thinking of such things as explained in this book. But, I was searching because I had sadly began to realize that I had been disillusioned by the fear-based dogma of the churches I had been attending.
This book opened my eyes and introduced me to new ways of thinking and I have continued to search for truth wherever it exists for me ever since. I appreciate this book because it helped me move forward on my spiritual path and accept other people's beliefs without judgment.
If you are a Christian and believe in the idea of an eternal hell, this book will shake up your worldview for the better. From a non-christian perspective, exploring this research will give you a look at the history of persecuted gnostic beliefs along with a mystical interpretation of Jesus’s teachings which can be applied to any individual regardless of their religious past. There are many paradoxes of philosophy/theology that require reincarnation to be accepted as their resolution. One such is the idea of original sin, free will, and determinism. Additionally it provides a wonderful section on meditations and exercises to awaken the divine spark of God(source) inside your heart once you realize your soul’s immortality.
There are other books which I recommend you read in conjunction with this to help you get a more wholistic view of reincarnation. “Journey of Souls” by Michael Newton; “Many Mansions” by Gina Cerminara; “The Afterlife and The True Nature of Reality” by John T. Mennella. If you’ve never questioned the idea of reincarnation, it will be well worth your time. The most advanced philosophers and seekers of truth all inevitably confront this discovery. Old souls will remember where they came from. It is the ultimate freedom beyond anything physical world.
You can believe in reincarnation, heaven, and hell at the same time. Hell is the temporary state of being if you have brought hell to others created through negative karma. Learning that you have created unresolved trauma and rejection of God is a hellish dark experience where you attract everything associated with that frequency. Then you are forced to rip off the karmic bandaid by reincarnating again and going through the circumstances of the person(s) who you did wrong to until you learn the lesson to the point of permanence change of heart.
Getting to heaven is where most people will be if they don’t have a lot of bad karma and are ready for God (no pride or selfishness). Still, in this state we are able to voluntarily study our own medium to low level past mistakes and voluntarily open ourselves to further evolution via reincarnation to advance eventually as warriors, teachers, or angels. Also we could choose to reincarnate to assist someone close to use we love in their next life or be a spiritual leader for larger groups of individuals.
Since I was a teenager I have been a Christian who believed in reincarnation. This book allows the two to co-mingle. Believing in one does not negate the other.
Was reincarnation known by the fathers of the church? She believes it. Is rencarnation the answer of those unfair scenarios where we think the law of God is funny? The book says so. Is rencarnation the most basic structure of the law of life that complys your very most distinctive actual circumstance? Read the pages. Is occident so naive to believe we wont come back? Search the facts. Would it have a porpouse for someone to hide you the truth of a rebirth? It wont harm you to get a light about it. Wait for the next life to read it? Dont think so.
Elizabeth Clare Prophet wrote a scholarly but highly readable exposition of reincarnation as an original Christian belief. People who doubt that reincarnation was taught and believed by the earliest Christians owe it to themselves to read this book.
I read this book about 15 years ago, and I just remember that it played a role in convincing me that reincarnation makes sense. I think I’d like to re-read this one.
Very historically based on the views of reincarnation with empahsis on the Gnostic gospel and the evolution of Christianity. Very eye opening and stirring.
==A useful reference for some seekers== If the subjects of reincarnation, pre-existence, (original) sin, karma, divine grace and spiritual ascension interest you, this book is a treasure chest of historical, mystical and theological information on those subjects and others. Wait a minute, some will say, Elizabeth Clare Prophet (ECP) was that eccentric crazy woman who along with her husband Mark founded and developed that Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT) cult whose members dug themselves down into bunkers to survive the atomic cataclysm which never happened. Yes, most would agree that ECP did some irrational and kooky things and her idiosyncratic personality victimized many of her loyal followers. But CUT and Summit University Press, its publishing department, survived and are thriving under new leadership. We may ask why? A good answer would probably be that most of the Prophets' theology wasn't so far off base after all (being deferential to New Age thought and Judeo-Christian and Eastern mysticism). Most of their ideas were theosophically sound and most originated from sane and rational religionists and philosophers from ancient times to modern. The result was a syncretistic amalgam. Perhaps where they went wrong was with their excessive ritualistic decreeing, legalistic authoritarianism and opportunistic appointments of too many quaint ascended (deceased) Masters to be venerated.
This book bears a strong imprint of the co-author, ECP's daughter, Erin Prophet. It is a fact that during its compilation ECP was already considerably debilitated by the effects of dementia. The work has been meticulously researched throughout. References take up sixty-three pages of explanations and clarifications. The bibliography is a list sixteen pages long. This book can hardly be accused of being a major tool to make conversions for CUT. There is no attempt at exclusivity or appeals to elevate and legitimatize CUT or its theology. In fact, only in the last of the twenty-five chapters are recommendations made for readers to follow some of CUT's mental and spiritual practices.
Regardless of authorship this book can be valued for its scholarship into the subjects I mentioned at the beginning. Quotes and references are plentiful and the historical development of Jewish, Greek, Roman, Christian and Indian thought is outlined and contrasted. It can be a very useful work for open-minded and curious seekers.
While very interested in reading this book, I couldn't get over the anxiety of what my next life would be. Everytime I picked up the book, I just thought about dying. Such a great beginning though!
An interesting perspective is provided to the reader, and lots of supporting documentation is provided that is excellent food for thought no matter what your religion.
