If you don't know any music theory, this is a very good place to start. It covers the basic stuff (notation, intervals, scales, circle of fifths), while the chords/harmony is left for Book 2. The exercises sold me – they are not that much, but just enough to make you remember the stuff, once you've solved them. Frankly, I wouldn't mind a book only containing exercises. Haven't found one yet, though.

I have high meaning about Berklee materials but I am quite disappointed by this book. It is not music theory but more music notation. If you play any instrument and are able to read sheets a little bit, nothing new. The only good point for me was about the rhythmic notation guidelines.

Was looking for a refresher on chord theory and a better understanding of how to compose on piano
