Rate this book
Wait–what!? You’re not thrilled with the photos you’re getting from your digital camera? The answer isn’t a new camera–it’s learning to use the one you’ve got! After all, it's not the camera that takes great photos–it's the person behind it.

With Your Camera Loves Learn to Love it Back , photographer and instructor Khara Plicanic teaches the basics of photography and digital camera functions that you can apply to any camera, anywhere, any time–answering questions What do all those different modes mean and when do I use them? What’s a megapixel and why should I care? Follow along with Khara’s simple explanations of shutter speed, aperture, and shooting modes to get comfortable handling your camera (even bossing it around a bit!), learn to shoot images that tell a story, and understand the thought process involved in making a great photograph. Along the way you’ll learn techniques for improving those yellow dingy photos of your kids’ indoor sporting events, fixing exposure on shots that are too dark or too bright, avoiding the dangers of over-cropping, and much more. By the time you’re finished, you’ll know how to best use the features of whatever camera you already have–whether it’s a high-performance DSLR or a basic point-and-shoot camera.

Get ready to fall in love with your camera (and photography) all over again! With Your Camera Loves You , you

• Move beyond “Auto” mode to take advantage of more of your camera’s features and settings

• Discover that the key to getting great images isn’t by using a fancy DSLR but by learning your way around whatever camera you have

• Learn from Khara’s fun, friendly voice and techno-babble-free explanations how to easily improve your photos

And as you learn, share your progress by posting your photos on Flickr.

For the past two weeks, I have been slowly reading straight through this guide, using it along with my camera and it's original manual. While doing so, I also jumped ahead an backwards, using it as I plan to use it from now on -- as a reference guide. Plianic's style is friendly and far from overwhelming, which seems to be uncharacteristic of so many other authors. She explains technical issues with ease and uses photos to illustrate her explanations.

This is an outstanding book for those who are in the front edge of using a digital camera beginning to learn how to shoot photos in manual mode. There ate very clear explanations and illustrations. The writer addresses those with not just the big DSLR camera but auhyglso the point and shoot version as well. I learned a lot from this book. I think you should try it!

I've been wanting to learn more about photography, especially before I do some cool traveling this summer. I've also suspected for awhile that it might be my next hobby--I think I already have a pretty decent eye for composing images, but the technical aspects of it and maximizing what a camera can do? That was well beyond my current skill set.

A photographer friend recommended this book to me, and it was fantastic! It's so very accessible to a novice like me, while still being really, really useful. Plicanic has a way of breaking things down and using useful analogies to help you understand the WHY behind camera settings, which makes it so much easier to learn--and such writing also makes it easier to remember the different factors and settings and concepts. The photos in the book are also judiciously chosen, giving a clear reference of what she is talking about for a given setting or technique--often, she does before-and-after shots, which really help drive home the utility of various functions and settings. And as a bonus, it's lightly humorous--I don't need a book like this to be laugh out loud funny (and it wasn't), but it's engaging prose, which is fairly unusual in a how-to book.

Best of all, Plicanic isn't a camera snob--most of her information can be used with point-and-shoots as well as DSLR, if not to the same extent. She understands who her audience is (beginners and emphatic non-professionals) and doesn't belittle them for that. So even if you don't see photography as a burgeoning hobby, but just want to improve your pictures a little or understand what all those settings do, this is a great book.

Anyway, great recommendation, RT. I checked it out from the library twice, and I think I might just go ahead and buy the thing, because I think it's that useful of a book.

(Bonus! She's a local author! I did a double-take when I saw a few photos taken downtown!)

Excellent for people that doesn't know anything of photography. Like me! :)
It gives excellent examples, and helped me understand more the exposure thing. I still don't grab it, but I know if I have any doubts I can still look into this book and it will help understand again.

Excellent.

And I loved the pictures she takes, soooo goood!!!

Probably the most useful photography book I've read (which, you know, I've read three. . . ).
