This book is so fantastic, and I recommend it to anyone who isn't burned out on the debate of theism. It covers everything from ancient Greek philosophy up through the middle ages and into the modern era. It is a series of well-chosen excerpts from the writings of skeptics who come from completely different, and often opposing, scientific/social/political/ even religious backgrounds. All the crap that well-known sexist wanker Richard Dawkins peddles is just regurgitated shite he read in the volumes so studiously put forth by these authors. if you want to introduce a religious friend to the basics of logic and critical thought this book is the way to do it.

A collection of writings, some otherwise inaccessible, that trace the evolution (no pun intended) of the rise of secularism in Western civ, from Epicurus to Freud. I only wish it also had examples of parallel developments in non-Western civ... perhaps a future book?
