Murray was Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Murray became a noted missionary leader. His father was a Scottish Presbyterian serving the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa, and his mother had connections with both French Huguenots and German Lutherans. This background to some extent explains his ecumenical spirit. He was educated at Aberdeen University, Scotland, and at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. After ordination in 1848 he served pastorates at Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington. He helped to found what are now the University College of the Orange Free State and the Stellenbosch Seminary. He served as Moderator of the Cape Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church and was president of both the YMCA (1865) and the South Africa General Mission (1888-1917), now the Africa Evangelical Fellowship.

He was one of the chief promoters of the call to missions in South Africa. This led to the Dutch Reformed Church missions to blacks in the Transvaal and Malawi. Apart from his evangelistic tours in South Africa, he spoke at the Keswick and Northfield Conventions in 1895, making a great impression. upon his British and American audiences. For his contribution to world missions he was given an honorary doctorate by the universities of Aberdeen (1898) and Cape of Good Hope(1907).

Murray is best known today for his devotional writings, which place great emphasis on the need for a rich, personal devotional life. Many of his 240 publications explain in how he saw this devotion and its outworking in the life of the Christian. Several of his books have become devotional classics. Among these are Abide in Christ, Absolute Surrender, With Christ in the School of Prayer, The Spirit of Christ and Waiting on God.

I discovered Andrew Murray two or three years ago and have continually been challenged by his to the point and contemporary message to Christians today. The overarching theme of the works I have read has been total surrender to Christ. Two short sermons by Andrew Murray are recorded in Jesus Himself. Murray, was a Dutch Reformed minister who lived in South Africa during the 1800s until his death in 1917. His passion for spreading the Gospel and challenging Christians to walk worthy is evident in his many writings. Modern readers may find his language formal and a bit difficult to digest, but not overly so.

The surrendered heart is one that believes Christ will do exactly what He said He would - live in us and form us into His image. On this daily relationship with the Savior, Murray says, "If you throw open your heart and give up everything but just just believing and allowing Him to do what He wants, it will come."

If your relationship with Christ is stagnant or if you're merely dabbling in religion, Jesus Himself will point you to a vital, growing relationship with the person of Jesus Christ. A life of total faith, total surrender, total dependence upon God is one that that is never boring and totally worth it. Andrew Murray's life is a testimony to that and the timeless message of relationship rather than religion is exceedingly relevant for today.

Andrew Murray is quickly becoming one of my favorite Christian authors. His writing is so genuine and honest. This book is about developing a close relationship with Jesus, where you develop true union with Him and learn to walk with Him everyday.

Here are some excerpts:

"You ought to begin with first believing; with presenting yourself before God in the attitude of silent worship, and asking Him to let a sense of His greatness and His presence come upon you. You must ask Him to let your heart be covered over with His holy presence...take the time to worship Him as the omnipotent God, to feel that the very power that created the world, the very power that raised Jesus from the dead, is at this moment working in your heart"

Murray talks about how the soul must submit and surrender to Jesus and God and asking the Lord to enter their soul. "Jesus, I do give up everything; I have given up everything; reveal Thyself."

"If you throw open your heart and give up everything but just believing and allowing Him to do what He wants, it will come. God be praised! It will come"

"Jesus I will not rest (i.e., seeking His presence through prayer)until Thou hast revealed Thyself fully to my soul"

"To each of those who have come to Him, Christ says,'I give Myself to thee, to be absolutely and wholly thine every hour of every day; to be with thee and in thee every moment, to bless thee and sustain thee, and to give thee each moment the consciousness of My presence; I will be wholly, wholly, wholly thine.'"

There is much more to this book and I will definitely be reading it again. Most of Murray's books are free on the internet or on kindle.

Jesus Himself, is a very short book that represents two messages that were prepared and preached by Andrew Murray, a South African Minister who lived from 1828 to 1917. The messages contained are simple and timeless. Murray was known for standing in opposition to Humanistic Rationalism and nowhere did he stand more in opposition to it than when he perceived its presence masquerading as Christian Religion. Murray in his ministry and in this book was relentless in bringing the focus back time and time again to the person of Jesus Christ. Murray opposed nothing more than even the hint of a Christless Christianity.

In these short but powerful messages, Murray reveals his "secret" to powerful Christian living. It's really no secret at all, but is profound in its simplicity. The "secret" to the Christian life is exclusive and complete reliance upon Jesus Christ to accomplish everything He has promised within us without our attempts to "help" Him along the way.

While reading this work I was struck by the irony that many of the beliefs and self-reliance that Murray identifies and confronts are no less timely and pertinent than they apparently were at the time of their original writing. Murray's writings as a whole went on to have a profound impact upon many revival movements, particularly in Wales and Murray also was very influential in the subsequent ministry of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee and their call to personal holiness apart from reliance upon our own efforts and abilities.

I read this book on the Kindle where it is available as a free download. Don't let the price fool you however as to its true value. The Kindle version reads well and there are no difficulties with navigating the work in that medium as opposed to a traditional book.

5 stars. A wonderful introduction to Murray as well as in invitation to explore more of his writings which remain as timely now as they were in the past.

This is a very quick and easy read, but rich and deep. Anyone longing for more of Jesus, anyone who desires a living and passionate relationship with Jesus, will find help in this book.

This was a free book on Kindle. It was very short, but packed full of rich, encouraging teaching on the abiding-presence of Jesus Himself. Andrew Murray emphasizes that we're not just reading about Jesus, praying to Jesus, and worshipping Jesus from afar, but Jesus Himself is with us and in us. He's not a set of doctrinal beliefs, but a real, living, personal, relational Jesus that wants us to experience Him.

"What is the difference between a dead Christ, whom the women went to anoint, and a living Christ? A dead Christ, I must do everything for; a living Christ does everything for me."

The theme of the book was Jesus' own words, "Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world." We don't have merely His words, but Jesus Himself with us. Always, On good days and bad days, when we fall short (every day), Christ is still present, still sufficient, and waiting to reveal Himself more and more to us every day if we'll open our hearts to Him.

"And what is to make a difference between Christ's disciples - not those who are just hoping to get to get to heaven, but Christ's whole-hearted disciples - what is to make a difference between them and other people? It is this, to be in fellowship with Jesus."

A must read for anyone desiring a close intimate relationship with Christ. Murray does a wonderful job of illustrating what true intamacy with Christ can and should look like.

Read this in one sitting but I pray this message stays on my heart for the foreseeable future. This book was a breath of fresh air, short and sweet and has given me a new outlook on what a gift it is to know that Christ is wholly mine and I am His. Required reading for the Christian who struggles with intimacy. Who has been convinced by Christ Jesus but still does not feel close to Him.

Definitely not a one and done book, but will be returning to this book often.

I have felt the burning; but not felt the fire

I do not think the wording of the book is contemporary to the 2021 thought processes ... The writer or speaker seems to be over explaining; but can someone as perfect as Jesus Christ be limited to a cut and dry/ straight to the point language configuration?

The burning in my heart rejoices in the flowing of the words, and am satisfied that the writer was connecting with my heart because Jesus exists in both our hearts just as plain as the over explaining words were as understandable as a writer who would use less words but cover the simplistic truth of the Revelation of Christ our Lord and King.

I remember a time when I decried how much more connected I seemed to be with the Holy Spirit - which is not a person per say but an unseen witness of the personhood of Christ - and more connected to God the Father - who is only revealed through His Son, Jesus Christ - than I was connected to my Savior, the God/Man who died for me. This book was an answer to my cries from that time of recognizing my loss of 'the more important need' - the presence of the unswerving, loving presence of the One I Knew to Love but did no know How to Love Until Now.

Love starting the day with some Andrew Murray on audio! “Jesus Himself” is a short, 2-chapter publication, which is basically the equivalent of listening to (or reading) 2 sermons. Chapter 2, “Lo I Am with You Alway” was the healing balm I needed this time. For anyone who has been trying to strive for Christ’s presence through some magical combination of hard work and strong faith, Murray’s words are just the reminder we need.

Just as a baby rests in its mother’s embrace, sometimes even oblivious to her presence, yet Mom is always mindful of, and abiding with her child as she cradles them in her arm. The suggestion that Jesus abides with us in much the same way is a precious word-picture to savor. Murray is so skilled at connecting his readers with helpful images like this one, that correspond to our relationship with God. Keeps me coming back for more!

Another Andrew Murray classic

Maybe its the fact that I so greatly enjoy Andrew Murray, or maybe it's the fact that I so love classic literature type writing. On the other hand, I do believe the reason I love this book so much is that it turns me towards my Jesus.

He is real, He is risen, and He is just as available to us today as He was to his own disciples. Mr. Murray brings all these facts into light and furthermore expounds to us how to bring a deeper walk with Jesus into our own lives.

It's not often that a book stirs my spirit this much, but Mr. Murray's words always make that happen. If you are interested in learning more about Jesus, this is definitely a book you should read.

This is a good, lengthy tract that my Grandmom assigned me to read. It was Arminian in nature, so as I was reading, I did switch the Arminian thoughts to Calvinistic ones in my head. But the writing is so intentional and it really makes you think about where you stand in your relationship with Jesus and what it means to give Jesus your all. I'll definitely be rereading it soon for a refresher.

Jesus Himself book review

This book is the 2nd best book I’ve read so far this year (#1 is the Bible). Andrew Murray provides many interesting thoughts and personal questions. I learned a ton from this short book that I hadn’t realized or learned in my 20+ years at church. This book is definitely worth your time.

A precious stone within so many authors.

This man's life and his work does harmonize with Christ Jesus and his teachings. I am not a scholar in the scriptures but I been a believer since 1976 at an Easter service. I have been down many rough road but Christ has always been there for me. I get my strength from the Word of God. I read the KJV 1611 Bible.

This book has basically 2 chapters and each chapter seems to be a sermon preached by Murray to the same church. Easy to read, somewhat more difficult to implement but I think it would revolutionize the lives of many Christians if an effort was made to follow the thinking presented herein. I think rereading these sermons at least once a month would be a very profitable exercise.

Great book on the meaning of salvation and true belief in Christ - if anyone is doubting the sincerity of their salvation, this is a must read. Murray is incredible at taking the scriptures and using them to reveal the hidden thoughts of our hearts, and how God longs for and accomplishes intimate fellowship with us

I loved everything about this book. Living in The Lord Jesus's presence 24/7 is the most desirable thing I can think of. Give yourself wholly to God, the Lord Jesus will come and live in you, with you in His presence.

I did not hear anything particularly profound in this book. It reinforces the different ways and meanings of living with Christ, walking with Christ, living for God, putting God first. What I heard in this book is all good, sound advice, but also not remotely earth-shattering or life changing.
