This was my first time attempting to learn ANYTHING about Kanji. I found this book to be so helpful. It was accessible and fun, full of interesting facts and explanations. The challenges it presented were satisfying without being intimidating. I am confident in my ability to learn Kanji now, and after reading this book I think I have learned about 100 by heart. There are around 250-300 Kanji though, plus hiragana and katakana chapters.

I 100% recommend this to beginners. It's a good entry point that doesn't treat you like you're stupid.

Explains the meaning of radicals and helps you understand kanjis better.

Pairing this up with other learning sources gave me a boost

This book starts out great with a few kanji at a time so it’s not overwhelming, and clear explanations on how to understand them. But the last few chapters are very overwhelming with so many new words to learn in a short part of the book

One thing I do like about the book is it focuses on English translation rather than readings because readings are complicated. So if you are a beginner learning kanji (or like me have forgotten most of them) you can get an understanding of what you are reading before you have to delve into the complex pronunciation rules. Which takes ages and sucks the fun out of the process really.

Now I’ve got through this I’m really looking forward to going into the aforementioned soul sucking approach and re-learning some readings and pronunciation rules! 😂
