First class action / thriller novel from 1980. The cover would have you believe that this is more like the books from those great men's adventure publishers like Pinnacle or Gold Eagle. In some ways it is. There is gun battles and fist fights, but this deals more with the human condition that those others didn't really dig too deep in. The horrors of war. Drug abuse. Mental illness are all covered here. In a really intriguing way, I may add.
Jim Bonner spent more than a few years deep in the bush in Vietnam. He comes home burnt by napalm and not the same man he was. He's working for the CIA on an assignment when he cracks up. The Company wants to grab him and silence him. For good. He's well prepared and well-armed and takes them on. Along the way he picks up a woman and her young child. He brings them with him on his trip through hard drugs, murder and all sorts of things no one should see.
Mostly a road trip across the USA from east to west. We meet all kinds of low lives and hard case Company men. We witness Bonners descent into mental illness. We see the effects on an innocent young lady and her boy. This was done very well on every aspect. If you can find a copy, I would highly recommend this.
