To date, she is the author of over thirty novels and novellas, including her current A-Tac series and Cottage in the Mist. When not sitting at the computer, Dee spends time exploring Connecticut with her husband, daughter, and Cardigan Welsh Corgis.
It was so weird to read about Lara moving on with Rafe when Jason was just killed in the last book. But a year had went past and she doesn't have to grieve forever. She's not my favorite character in the series but I liked her as the star of a short story. Her journey of moving on would have worked better in a full length novel but since she's not a member of the team (at the moment), a novella makes sense. I wonder if she'll pop up in a later book.
Too short. This could have easily been a full-length novel, but instead, felt more like an afterthought. As if Lara's continuing story wasn't really relevant.

This was my first Davis read, and although it was a short story, it totally pulled me in and had me wishing for so much more. I am definitely going to go out and pick up more of her work!
Lara was looking to escape for awhile, and ended up in Africa working at a small clinic as one of only a few doctors. She is running from her past and the love she lost. One night after one too many shots, the sexy Rafe starts looking more and more like a man she could start a life with. After one smoking hot night together tough, all Lara’s memories re-surface and she worries she may have moved too fast.
Rafe wants nothing more than to make Lara’s his, for good. But when rebel forces kidnap and take Lara, he fears the worst. Together they must trek through the jungle, avoid detection and try to find a way out of danger – all while fighting the intense attraction that keeps pulling them together.
This was a short but very fast paced novella. We are immediately thrown into the crazy life that Lara and Rafe live in Africa, including the never ending problems with sub-par health care. I always love mercenary and military romance books set in third world countries that bring about awareness to problems that arise around the world. I think it’s just another wonderful platform for people to become more knowledgeable of the world at large.
The suspense was really well done in this novella. I loved the sneaking through the jungle and trying to avoid the rebel forces aspect of it. I really do wish this could have been longer, because I think Davis could have really gone into so much more (like survival tactics, jungle wildlife, etc.). But with the short amount of page space, I thought the story had a perfect balance of suspense and romance.
At times the romance did feel a little rushed, again one of the downfalls of only having a certain number of pages. Lara and Rafe went from being co-workers to lovers to being in love in just about 48 very short hours. While I agree that adrenaline fueled situations can cause strong emotions between two people, I thought that their declarations of love at the end were a little too much too soon. Especially for Lara, who struggled with letting go of her previous love. But, the two were really well suited together and I loved them together.
All in all I really enjoyed this novella. It was a great introduction into Davis’ writing style and I have to say, I am definitely going to go and check out the other books in her A-Tac Series. The romance was hot and passionate, the suspense was intense and believable, and the overall story was beautiful.
First thing I need to clarify is that I've never read anything by this author and I'm not familiar with the A-Tac series. Now, that being said, I was able to fully enjoy this short story even without having any background.
Lara was part of the A-Tac team, working for the CIA until her husband Jason died tragically. She needed to get away and the only way she found to get away and cope with her grief, or just hide it, was to go hide in Africa, in a settlement where she could do humanitarian medical services. She's been there now a year. She's still a basket case about losing her husband. I felt she wasn't truly ready to get a HEA. At the beginning of the book her emotions were still very raw, she was still broken, and hadn't let go of the memory of Jason.
On the other hand we have the hot Aussie mercenary, Rafe. He's been lusting for Lara, and falling in love with her, since she came to Africa and their little settlement.
Things get complicated when her clinic is attacked by militia and she is kidnapped. Her only hope is Rafe coming for her. And after that is one twist after another! The suspense was actually good and kept the story interesting, instead of having one sex scene after another.
In the end, his feelings felt real, his attraction to her and hopes for the future were justified. But in her case, I thought it was forced and too quick. A simple we are couple and care about each other would've worked much better for me than her going from "I don't want to be a notch in his bedpost and don't really like him" to "I love him" in about 24 hours.
I am intrigued to read about the A-Tac team now, being that technically this story doesn't involve one of their missions or current team members. I enjoyed Ms. Davis's writing style!

My Review: This is a novella featuring one of the past members of the A-TAC team, Lara, who has escaped to Africa after the death of her husband, Jason. Rafe is in Africa as security for the clinic where Lara works and they hook up one night after a particularly bad day at the clinic and a few too many shots at the local bar. Before they have a chance to see if things are going to develop further, there is an attack on the clinic and Lara is kidnapped. With lots of twists and turns in plot and story line, Rafe & Lara end up on the run together.
For a short little novella, there is a lot happening in this book. It is very well written and thought out. I really liked both of the characters of Lara & Rafe. Rafe has been fighting feelings for Lara for a while. She, on the other hand, is just starting to come out of her grief over her husband who died a year ago. They are in very different places about where they would like to see their relationship go, but that quickly changes when faced with life or death.
There was a lot of great suspense in this book as the couple spends the majority of the novella on the run. There were also some great cameo's at the end from the team members that we fell in love with from the first 3 A-TAC novels.
Overall this is a fabulous little read and so perfect for gearing up for the next A-TAC novel, Deep Disclosure, which is releasing in August.
Daring was my very first book by Dee Davis. Yes I know it’s the middle of the A-Tac series, but I find novellas to be a good place to start when looking at new to me authors. I found this one to be highly engaging. I loved the location of the jungle and the mercenary element involved. I’m a sucker for a mercenary. I thought the novella moved along quite nicely and gave me a full insight into the entire series, not only this particular addition. There was great interaction between characters and even though it was a fast evolvement I didn’t feel really rushed to connect.
I thought Rafe and Lara were great together. I liked how Dee gave us the opportunity to know about Rafes feelings and how they weren’t something that happened just then. It was a slow simmer over a long period of time. I hurt for Lara because she obviously hadn’t gotten over her fallen boyfriend Jason. I have been there and moving on is so very difficult. So I understood her “wanting” to move on but being unable to. I thought Rafe showed great patience with her and that made me like his character even more.
The action involved in the plot was well thought out and it moved the short novella along nicely. It didn’t really allow for any downtime. The outcome was well done and I liked the epilogue at the end for closure.
If this novella is any indication of the rest of the A-Tac series, it looks like my wallet is going to be hurting because I definitely want more!
RATING:4.5)DARING by Dee Davis is an exciting romantic supsense e-novella set in present day revolution torn Central Africa. It is featuring former A-TAC member, medical officer, and elite CIA team member,Lara Prescott and Rafe Winters, mercenary for hire, and security for a clinic or so it seems. After a passionate sexual encounter between Lara and Rafe,Lara believes she might could move on with her life after the tragic death of her former lover/friend/team member. But when she is targeted for a kidnaping scheme who she believes Rafe is,may not be who is is after all. Full of action, passion, sensual tension, being chased by insurgents,a bomb blast and running for survival what is not to enjoy with this fast paced story of love, healing and romance. Ms.Davis has done it again with "Daring". A not to miss story that lets the reader see the healing and moving on with her life for Lara. If you have not read any of the A-TAC series I would recommend them all. A must read with adventure, suspense, romance, and second chances with some of the elite A-TAC members returning for an appearance. Highly recommend. This book was received for review from the publisher. Details can be found at Grand Central Publishing and My Book Addiction and More.

For me this novella was an introduction to Ms. Davis’ A-Tac series. As soon as I read the description of it, I knew I had to check it out, because apparently A-Tac is an elite CIA unit posing as faculty at an Ivy League college. If this were true, it would explain so much, wouldn’t it? This novella focuses on Lara Prescott, the former medical officer for the team, whose lover Jason died during a mission over a year ago. Lara’s been working in a clinic in Africa, and when insurgents arrive, she realizes that they’re there for her. Fortunately sexy mercenary Rafe Winters is there to fill all her needs (ha!). Novellas can be hit or miss for me, especially romantic suspense, but this one was great. The couple had known each other for over a year, so their romance was believable and smoldering. I can’t wait to read more of Ms. Davis’ work!
This novella is one of the reasons that I really dislike reading a series out of order. I haven't read any of the preceding books to this novella, so I don't know any of the back story about the organization A-Tac or the peripheral characters that show up in the book. I had the feeling of walking into the theater halfway through a movie and jsut couldn't catch up.
Having said that, Daring was just OK for me. I think if I had more back story for both Lara and Rafe I would have liked both of them more than I did. I didn't get the sense that I knew either charter enough to like either of them. The action in the story was engaging and I liked the question "Is Rafe a good guy or not?", but beyond that the story felt flat. The romance just seemed too forced and wasn't believable.
I am intrigued enough to go back and read the books preceding this novella. Maybe I'll come to appreciate it more if I do.
What a great between meal snack for followers of Dee Davis's terrific series about the A-TAC crew. Former medical officer for A-TAC, Lara Prescott is recovering from the death of her husband by donating her medical expertise to a tiny clinic in a war torn village in Africa. Rafe Winters is an Aussie merc also attached to the clinic. When the clinic is destroyed by rebels, Lara is captured and it's impossible to tell the good guys from the bad. There also a great excerpt from the next full A-Tac novel. A truly wonderful series. Well done. Full review @ http://www.yougottareadreviews.blogsp...
For this to be a shorter story it still packed alot of punch.. This is Lara Prescott story who we find in Africa where she has gone to heal after the death of her husband Jason. Its been a year yet she still struggles with his death.. Then bam the book takes off :) This book also has a sneek peek at the next book which is Tuckers.. Cannot wait.....
This is a tight little novella with lost of twists and turns. Lara and Rafe are both likeable and Rafe has the added bonus of playing both sides. This is a thrill ride my only complaint is I wanted to know more and learn more about them so I could have done with it being longer but then I am just greedy.
I really wish Lara would have gotten a full length book. It seemed like parts of the book were rushed, especially the ending. It was great to see the A-Tac team in action again, even if it was briefly in this book.
Lara was always a minor character but it's nice to know what happened to her after Jason was killed. It is a novella which means its short and the plot is going to be underdeveloped because of that but still a good read from the A-TAC world
Good story...but, being new to readers I didn't realize it was a novella...prefer to read full length books, therefore I'm disappointed with the length.
