With unemployment reaching a record high in some parts of the United States, FUNemployed: Finding the Upside in the Downturn is a unique, yet timely read. Kerry Quinn‘s approach to her job loss in 2009 started out like many do, but what she chose to do with her time off, while looking for gainful employment, makes her stand out.

Quinn suggests that the unemployed take advantage of this time to take care of things they couldn’t while gainfully employed–make healthy changes, spend time with family and friends, or travel. She not only helps the reader cope with a devastating situation–the loss of livelihood–but she also helps the reader understand that there’s more to life than a job and that your job doesn’t determine who you are.

What I Loved: This book is full of information for everyone–not just those suffering from job loss. There are tips to save money, trends for helping one cope, and humorous examples that will not only produce giggling fits, but also makes this book hard to put down.

What I Didn’t Love: I can’t think of anything about this book I didn’t like. Maybe it was too short, or maybe it would have been better if it also followed Quinn‘s life after she returned to the workforce. I don’t know. Regardless, it’s pretty great As-Is.

Overall: Kerry Quinn‘s optimism is contagious, and I really enjoyed her book. It was fun, witty, and easy to read. While I’m lucky to never have been unemployed, I came away with lessons that I can apply to other difficult situations as they arise, and I’d recommend this in a heartbeat to anyone just needing a pick-me-up.

I’m sure we’ve all been there at some point, no job, no money and often no hope. It’s not a pleasant place to be by any means and unemployment, especially in this global downturn, contributes to rising levels of depression in nations all over the world. But, it doesn’t have to be that way, sure the lack of money is always going to be an issue, but the reality is that unemployment often presents unexpected opportunities to make major life changes if you are willing to look for, and embrace them.

Kerry Quinn faced her unemployed status and decided she didn’t want to be just another statistic; she decided that she wanted her time looking for a job to be a positive experience as well. What she achieved was something beyond her expectations, the ability to stand out to employers because of her positive attitude and her willingness to embrace forced change.

This book is a must for all those facing unemployment, whether through redundancy or choice simply because it points out that the lack of money needn’t be the cause for depression and in fact can be a fabulous jumping off point to launch into a brand new life, doing all the things you wanted to but couldn’t because of time constraints. Kerry delivers her message in a quick fired, amusing way – telling you both the upsides and the downsides of life in the netherworld of the jobless.
