Romeo Quiles has accepted a job online in lush and sunny Kauai. However, upon his arrival in the Hawaiian Islands, he discovers the job is a scam. The company that hired him has emptied his bank accounts and he must scramble to either return home to Cupertino, California, and certain unemployment, or to give paradise a chance.

He’s thrilled when he lands another job, ironically at the same resort hotel used by the scam artists to lure him to Hawaii. Except that Romeo’s fallen for hotter than hot Julius who just took on the job Romeo wanted—and he’s not a very nice boss. To top it off, there’s secrets. Secrets galore. There’s ancient fire knife dancing, mysterious chants and an old blind man Romeo comes to cherish, but love rips at his heart. Can Romeo and Julius break the curse that separates them? Or will they wind up apart?

A.J. Llewellyn lives in California, but dreams of living in Hawaii. Frequent trips to all the islands, bags of Kona coffee in the fridge and a healthy collection of Hawaiian records keep this writer refueled.

A.J’s passion for the islands led to writing a play about the last ruling monarch of Hawaii, Queen Lili’uokalani as well as a non-erotic novel about the overthrow of her kingdom written in diary form from her maid’s point of view.

A.J. never lacks inspiritation for male/male erotic romances and on the rare occasion this happens, pursues other passions such as collecting books on Hawaiiana, surfing and spending time with friends and animal companions.

A.J. Llewellyn believes that love is a song best sung out loud.

This is a story with a definite difference. Not just in terms of the title, which is an allusion to one of the most famous, if somewhat unlucky, love stories in the history of Western civilization, but also in its setting. As an official fan of A.J. Llewellyn’s stories, especially the ones set in Hawaii, I was already very happy when I read the blurb. Well, not about the storyline, because that sounded like the hero was going to be very, very stressed by about page fifteen. No, what caught my attention was the fact that this was a Hawaiian A.J. story!

Romeo is an interesting character. Some might call him naïve to fall for a scam that promises him a dream job in Kauai. After all, everyone knows that something that sounds too good to be true generally is. The cynic in me definitely agrees with those people. But you know what? The minute I started reading about Romeo and his desperate need to make a better life for himself, that changed. His willingness to do anything to make an honest living and his ability to pick up the pieces of his life again and again was impossible to resist. I’ve never been in as desperate a situation as his, but I can understand how it might influence the way people think. And Romeo is just a great guy!

Julius is a bit mysterious at first. I wasn’t quite sure where he fit and since Romeo’s point of view is all I had, I learned about Julius at the same time as Romeo did. I really enjoyed that. The twists and turns were fascinating, as were all of the secondary characters. They really brought the story to life even more, and increased my enjoyment when I read this story again, now that it has been rereleased.

If you like stories which have you breathless with excitement and incensed at the injustice of what is happening to the main character at the same time, this one should make you happy. If the setting of beautiful Hawaii intrigues you even half as much as it does me, this story will help make you feel as if you’re there. And finally, if you like a love story with a twist and gorgeous men who have to work to overcome the obstacles in their lives before a happy ending, give this book a go. I’ll bet you won’t regret it. I certainly didn’t.

4 Heart Review by Kimberley

This story, just like many others from this author, has absolutely the sweetest characters. From the MCs to the peripheral characters, they’re all quite memorable. The story is short but there are so many ‘feels’ packed into this, it’s unbelievable.

Romeo was lured into the beautiful island of Hawaii with the promise of his dream job only to find out it was a scam. The great Hawaiian gods and the spirit of Romeo’s father shuffled their feet and put people in Romeo’s life that turned his luck around.

I always enjoy this author’s books, especially the ones based in Hawaii. I admit that the title threw me off; I was expecting to find a story about two men who were unlucky in love, but that was not the case. I adored Romeo’s character. He had such a strong spirit. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, tucking his tail and returning home to certain unemployment, he decides to stay and fights to make a new life for himself. I am a firm believer that everything in life, good or bad, happens for a reason. It was fate that brought him to those islands.

Julius aka Kumi is a big and beautiful Hawaiian fire dancer. He and Romeo meet and it’s clear from the very start that these two lovely men were made for each other. Kumi is hardworking and loyal, a great brother, uncle, son and friend. His family and friends are amazing.

As usual, Ms. Llewellyn’s stories are filled with magical beauty of the Hawaiian Islands and its people. I also adore how she always manages to tastefully inject these wonderfully written multiethnic characters into her stories. Once again, her secondary characters are amazing!

As with all of this author’s works, there are a few pleasantly surprising twists to the stories that you are sure to enjoy.

I definitely recommend you give this sweet little story a read. You will not be disappointed.
