One of three books from Winston Churchill's Private Secretary through the Second World War and who went on to become secrtary to the new Queen Elizabeth. Brilliant, stunning usage of the purest english you will possibly ever read and an insider's view to one of the most difficut times in Britsh history. If for no other reason buy it and the 2 volumes of "Fringes of Power", which I aslo have, for the simple joy of reaing english as it was meant to be written
Well written, as we would expect, with the slightly mannered wit and humour that would have been expected of classically educated senior civil servants. Examples are the anecdotes about Commonwealth leaders standing on ceremony and protocol about riding in carriages; or the Welsh Secretary appointment. But he was born with an entire canteen of silver cutlery in his mouth and knew everybody it seems; and I suspect may have been rather aloof, had we lesser types encountered him.
